overally, is JHU more prestigious than WashU?

overally, is JHU more prestigious than WashU?

for political science?
for economics?

poli sci and econ are standard fare at ALL colleges. Any of the top 50 will give you a great education in those fields.

'overally'???

Have you ever been to St Louis?? Man it sucks

I'd say overall, JHU is more prestigious and well-known than WUStL, but for the two departments you mention, I dunno...

Keevin, Let's face it, Baltimore is not a hot spot either! WashU has a georgeous campus in the upscale suburb of Clayton and has a very rich campus life. The school also abuts Forest Park which is the largest city park in the country and has ice skating, boats, fields...etc. The school is also walking distance from "the Loop", a funky area with lots of shops and restaurants. WashU kids spend most of their time in the WashU "bubble" and not in the city of St. Louis.

In Baltimore, Hopkins is a big deal. Wash U, not so much.

Yes................................................

Nationally and internationally, Johns Hopkins probably has the bigger name. This reflects such varying factors as its location (more people are familiar with the urban areas of the Northeast than with the urban areas of the Midwest), its reputation as a powerhouse in certain fields (e.g. medicine and lacrosse), and the fact that its alumni include a well-known US president (Woodrow Wilson). The WUSTL name may be more recognized in the Midwest. However, both schools are well regarded and highly ranked (in fact, the current US News rankings put WUSTL slightly higher), so this is not a compelling reason to pick JHU.

Both schools probably have fine undergraduate political science and economics programs. There may be some advantages to studying national or international politics at JHU, given its proximity to Washington DC and JHU's School of Advanced International Studies, but that's just a guess.

i thought wilson went to princeton...maybe jhu for undergrad and grad for princeton...or perhaps the other way around??

Wash U is better except for Med. in which J.Hop. is slightly better.

Wilson got his bachelor's degree at Princeton; he later joined the Princeton faculty, and eventually became President of Princeton. So he is most closely associated with Princeton. However, he got his PhD from Johns Hopkins (and remains the only US President to have earned one).

lol overally...thats really funny

Johns Hopkins.. yes

Does it really matter. They are virtually identical on prestige. Just choose between the two based on fit.

Each of their medical schools is the most famous part of the university. According to Wikipedia, Johns Hopkins University endowment is 2.4 billion. The medical school's endowment is 2 billion or 80% of the total endowment which is an extremely high percentage.

Wash U's total endowment is 4.7 billion (I could not find the medical school endowment). However, for comparison, Yale University endowment is 18 billion and the medical school endowment is 1.5 billion or 10% of the total.

Hopkins medical school is more prestigious than Wash U's. However, I would guess (based on endowment) that the rest of Wash U does better than Hopkins.

Endowment is no way to determine from which school the students are more successful. I would in no way use USNWR rankings, which change year to year anyway as a compelling reason to pick one school over another; maybe when its #3 vs #40, but not in this case. JHU is certainly more well known than WUSTL in the mid-Atlantic and northeast, so part of the question is where do you envision locating after college.

Wash U's stock has risen greatly in recent years, because not that long ago, I don't think anyone would have even posted this question. In any event, if you are talking strictly about "prestige", I think the fact that modern medicine in the United States really started at the JHU hospital, which was the first teaching hospital in the US, has created permanent prestige for JHU that is not subject to change.

Wash U is a better OVERALL school than Hopkins....case closed

eh.. dont you mean Johns Hopkins..

Just some of my basis:

Hopkins' Prestige is not just med-- look at the sciences, Public Health, International Relations, English, even History and Art History.....etc

Amazing Research opportunities (biomed, JH Hosp, etc.)

High(er) peer asessment ranking
