Overestimate of hours...

So I have a weird question. I was accepted ED and on my app I put a certain number of weeks/year for an EC. That number was based on the assumption that I was going to do an EC for a couple of weeks that I ended up not participating because of time conflicts, so now my estimate for number of weeks is too high.

Will this get me rescinded? I'm really paranoid about these things...

My concern is that they'll contact my advisor or something and he won't know because he wasn't aware that I was planning on doing this EC those 2 weeks, and then they'll think I'm lying and rescind me.

Am I just ridiculous?

Will this get me rescinded? No.
Am I just ridiculous? Yes.

Lol, you sound just like me. I get so paranoid over these little what-if situations. I would talk to your advisor about it, just to hear him/her reassure you that it’s not something to worry about.

Don’t worry! I think as long as you’re close (like within a couple of weeks/hours), you’re fine, it’s supposed to be an APPROXIMATE number. The chance that they actually check up on your ECs after acceptance is extremely low, the chance that they have an issue with you being off by 2 weeks is minute, the chance that they rescind you for it (especially without talking to you about it first) is like .000000000001%.:)

You were supposed to be exact to the millisecond…

haha, Dwight. I think this whole process just makes everyone so high strung that once it’s over and we should be able to breathe, people freak out over unimportant things/non-issues like this. People can’t accept that sometimes things just work out well!

^Yeah, when I got into my #1 school through email, I just kept thinking there was some kind of mistake. I finally was reassured when I got my admit letter four days later.

Out of curiousity, what if something was a deliberate and extreme over estimation (for instance, claiming something like 2000 voulnteer hours when you really did something like 300)? Do they recind in cases like that?

They would almost certainly rescind if they found out. 300 to 2000 is a huge stretch.

I have heard of cases of colleges revoking degrees even after you graduate, if they later find out you lied on your application way back when.

Don’t lie.

Yeah, Qwerty, they would rescind then if they found out because that’s just a blatant lie (a huge one, a small lie might not get you rescinded). As long as you’re within a few hours/weeks (many people have to guess, they know it’s not an exact science), I’m sure it’s fine, but anything more and you’re playing with fire.

Thanks, guys. I feel better…I’ve just been so freaked out since I got my acceptance that something will mess it up.

So then do colleges (each college maybe being different) have an exact point at which they recind (for instance, maybe 20% off, 30% off? Whatever the point is), or is it just based on their guess of intent (like if they think you actually lied just to get in, or if you were just off by a little on accident)? And then what if you were past that threshold set (assuming there is one), but didn’t intend to lie?

I don’t think there’s any particular threshold, it’s probably more just whether it seems reasonable that the applicant could have just estimated wrong. It’s pretty reasonable to believe that jmds could have accidentally added a few extra weeks/year or hours/week, but if a teacher mentioned that someone did hundreds of fewer hours or something, it would probably be an issue.

The hours estimates are just iffy to begin with, which is probably why some schools , like Columbia, removed them from their app. They tend not to be too accurate, even when the student is trying to be as honest as possible.

And jmds, as we said, don’t worry! You’d have to be a lot more than a few hours off to get rescinded!

I have one more question. For another EC, I participate more frequently in the summer and made note of that on my application. However, the facility does not keep very good records and may not be able to confirm my hours (especially since they just changed coordinators). Would this be an issue that could warrant getting rescinded? I don’t know how I’d confirm it since the staff has changed so much…

DON’T WORRY. Other people may be able to give you more info, but the chance of being rescinded over something like that is basically zero.

Any other opinions? I’m kind of freaking out about this.

No one?

10char

I’m sure you’ll be fine. They’re not going out looking for reasons to recind admission from people (and if they are then that’s probably not a college you really want to be going to).

So this won’t be an issue?

I may just be freaking out because I don’t have apps to worry about anymore, but this makes me nervous.
