<p>My son will be a transfer student at Miami starting this fall. I have been told from the housing folks that since he committed on the late side, he is vulnerable to be placed in overflow housing, and he received an email last night stating that his housing is still not set. </p>
<p>Overflow housing has been defined to me from someone in housing as either sharing a basement with 14 other guys, or rooming with an RA. It is temporary until a room opens up, but that could be an entire semester. This has my husband and I furious. Noone had mentioned this to us as a possibility at all. Both options are ones that my son will not thrive in. </p>
<p>Does anyone have any experience with this that they can share?</p>

I would not want my kid in the overflow either, I would check all possibilities of non-dorm housing.</p>
<p>Hope things worked out for your son as far as housing. Both of my kids this year had roommates that never showed up. D’s roommate transferred out about a week before school started and she is still without a roommate. S is one of the RA’s who offered to take in a student if need be but his assigned roommate never showed up either. Not sure if he was placed elsewhere before school started or what happened. There is a lot of last minute changes that go on the week school starts. If your son ended up with an RA that wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen. I know many of the RA’s in my son’s building would be quite nice to have as roommates - in many cases much better than a random freshman. They are often easy going, get along well with others, don’t drink, study hard, and are generally nice people and would go out of their way to make him feel welcome.</p>
