can anyone help me with booking the flight and stuff? like once i arrive, is berkeley going to have a shuttle waiting for us or do we need to arrange our own travel arrangements to get there? where is the nearest airport to berkeley? i am sorry to ask but ive never done anything like this before

Nearest airport to Berkeley is OAK, or Oakland Airport but you can also land in SFO San Francisco Int. and also get the BART there.

I definitely suggest/recommend using Southwest Airlines for your college travels…it’s a college student’s best friend. Tickets are super cheap, the service is great and it’s just very awesome in general! [: Better hurry up and reserve tho!

As for the shuttle, I haven’t heard of that? You can always take a taxi, or the BART, and those are very accessible right as you get out of the airport, or you can ask around for directions…it shouldn’t be a problem!

is BART like a subway thing or a bus thing? does BART take me directly from san francisco airport to uc berkeley? i want to arrive in san francisco airport because i thought it would be cool

Really?! That must have been nice, LOL.

BlackLantern, I just have to warn you that SFO is usually much more crowded than OAK. I hated it…and it’s so huge that the first time I went there I got lost…=.=‘’

The BART doesn’t take you directly to UCB, it takes you to a nearby stop, but it’s walking distance from there!

Hmm. That would probably make sense. That’s a lot of money to be wasting for everything. On the positive side, when you have to fly back to Cal (after break or something) you’ll know your way? ;D

88888888: Could you be referring to bridges? That program is entirely free “to only about 800 admitted students who would not be likely to visit Berkeley without this program. In selecting students to participate, Berkeley used the following criteria: students who participated in major outreach programs (e.g… EAOP, Puente, MESA, Upward Bound, Talent Search, etc.); students who attend high schools that score low on the statewide ranking of academic performance measures (the Academic Performance Index); or students from low-income families who attend California private high schools.”

tl;dr - OHP is free for students who don’t have a lot of money.

You can fly into Oakland also, but you have to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the BART (which isn’t that big a deal, it’s just one more leg on your trip). Either way, you can find out about the airport BART connections here:

It’ll cost you $5.90 one way from SFO. You buy the ticket from a vending machine in the BART station using cash or a credit card. If you are traveling on a weekday you can get on a red train and take it all the way to Downtown Berkeley from SFO airport. On weekends you can take any train and transfer to a red train. The trains run pretty frequently so you don’t have to be rushed about figuring out which platform to go to. There are maps on the wall at every station to help you figure things out. (Another positive about flying into SFO is that you can’t get on the BART going in the wrong direction because it’s at the end of the line ;))

Print out a mapquest (or like) map of the area to the west of campus and use it to walk to the information booth on the semi-circular entrance to the University on Oxford St. They’ll give you a campus map and answer any questions there.

Make it your mission while you’re there to find someone to go back to the airport with! Allow yourself lots of extra travel time so you can soak it all up. Have fun!

a few people from my school got the Overnight Host Program completely free, and others got it for 55 dollars. but if we got it for free, are they going to book the flight for us?
