So they tell you to bring a sleeping bag, does that mean your sleeping on the floor or are you provided a bed with no linens?
The floor, unless you get lucky and your host has an air mattress or something.
…or you sleep with someone, but that is generally very very frowned upon.
at the last one, Nondorf kept reminding the kids to “make good choices”. He didn’t elaborate. D17 was told by one of the students that a few years ago some prospie was partying all night and threw up in front of Nondorf the next morning.
Hosts are sent an email with this lovely message
Don’t do anything stupid.
Yes, I’ve heard the prospie story too. Supposedly, there were several who got drunk at the overnight and had their admission rescinded. My kid was just there for an overnight. It was definitely a floor situation. Take a sleeping bag, pillow, and a bath towel.
Yes, you sleep on the floor. My D has already hosted 2 prospies and one kept her up until 3am. She was not happy about that. But she survived.
@goingnutsmom - surely that wasn’t MY child! LOL. Mine was invited to a few parties by her hosts but declined and went to bed (or to sleeping bag, rather). She should have had your daughter as host!
My kid’s host disappeared before letting him in, so mine was locked out. Showed up around 2 am with friends, and partied hard till 4 am in the room. He then skipped his morning classes. It wasn’t optimal at all, but my understanding is that this is an unusual situation; not the norm. We’re undeterred! Everyone else he met there over several visits was friendly, seemed responsible, etc. I think there will always be a few kids in any group who behave inappropriately, and this was just luck of the draw.
Sounds like one of those darn Common App kids!
Statistically speaking, a typical UChicago student is a teetotaler who would’ve gone somewhere else if he/she/they didn’t care about academics. This anecdote (and especially the total lack of concern for a guest) is a possibility that didn’t occur to me until I read about it here. This is very unusual.
Thanks for the info, good to go with a sleeping bag, pillow and a small air mattress (more like one of those things you float on really)
