I just got accepted to attend an overnight at johns hopkins. The “application” process was not that hard, I just had to send in my school transcript.
My friend had done a much harder application process for Williams, and got into the overnight program and was subsequently accepted to the college in the spring.
My question is that since the process to getting in to johns hopkins was not as rigorous as other colleges, does that mean the college really isn’t interested in me, or that getting in doesn’t mean much for my chances of getting in? Was there really even a point in submitting my transcript? Additionally, will going to this overnight help my admission chances at all?
I have never heard of overnights being considered as part of the admissions process. I thought their principal purpose was for the student to get a good look at (and feel for) the school to help decide whether it’s a good fit.
Have things changed? Are overnights now being considered in admissions decisions?
My child, an athletic recruit, went on a few overnight visits that were coordinated by the school/coach. My other child organized his own overnight visits. Did you request a visit?
Being accepted to do an overnight likely means nothing other than you requested to do one and provided the required information/documentation to the school. The transcript may just have been to document that you are a HS senior. I would not take the overnight as a sign that you will be admitted.
You can google the common data set (part C I believe) to see if Johns Hopkins factors demonstrated interest into the admissions decision – if the school does take demonstrated interest into account then doing the overnight might help a bit, if the school doesn’t take demonstrated interested into account then it won’t matter for admissions purposes.
In any event it should get you a good look at the school.
I don’t believe overnight visits have anything to do with acceptance. Most colleges you will apply to will recommend one so that you get a feel for the campus and if this is the place you want to spend the next four years. It will give you a chance to take a tour, visit classes, and hang out with current students to get insight about college life.
Yes, it may be a matter of security and wanting to verify that you are an actual prospective appiicant. It’s also possible that they get more requests than they have hosts for, and they might screen out kids who aren’t competitive applicants to better accommodate those who are. That’s just pure speculation though. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
Right, unless it’s what’s described in #4, I wouldn’t ascribe anything to it. If it IS an expenses-paid fly-in, then THAT’s a strong indication of JHU’s interest – that’s something altogether different.
