overused college essay topics

So this has probably already been discussed before, but is writing about my need to be perfect an overused/sappy/over-rated college essay topic? I'm panicking because I've submitted most of my applications already and am suddenly worrying--I wrote about how I've always obsessed over things to the point where I wouldn't raise my hand in class because I was afraid to be wrong--even when I had a question about something.
I explained how playing a sport helped me get over that, because I realized that I didn't have to be the best, and went into detail about a certain game that I lost, and how normally I would have given up once I was already losing, but instead I tried harder than ever just to prove to myself that it didn't matter whether I won or lost as long as I tried my best.
Is that too sappy?
And in general, what are the boring/meaningless topics? I know generally one shouldn't write about how they went to a third world country and witnessed poverty and felt rich-people-guilt, but are there topics to stay away from? Just curious.

There are no boring or meaningless or sappy or overused or overrated or cliche topics.

There are only boring or meaningless or sappy or overused or overrated or cliche treatments of topics.

Agreed. If you came at the topic from a unique viewpoint, you should be fine. As long as your essay really shows who you are, very few subjects are too cliche.

thanks for the help!

Agreed, as long as your approach and analysis is deep and unique, the topic an be anything…

Pretty much what everyone else said. It all depends on the way you approach the topic and it’s significance to you, if for example, sports has played a major role in your life, then by all means write about it! They care more about that rather than some obscure topic. You’re fine

I know, but aren’t there topics that are harder to make unique?
I mean, even if you make a sports essay very unique, don’t they get tired of reading about sports after awhile?

If they did indeed read many sports essays, the strong ones–the personal, detailed, specific, revealing ones–are going to feel just that much more refreshing.
