Overwhelmed by course choices

I'm just starting to enroll in my courses and it's overwhelmed me.. lol. After missing orientation and being away for the summer, it looks like I'll have to make the decision fast. So can you guys offer recommendations for me? I'm split between law and comp. engineering. I have basic java programming skills and have taken law in my senior year of HS

so I'm thinking of taking
-my core course
-a math 19A class (that fulfills a GE requirement right?)
-and Intro to Networking and the Internet.

But I'm confused, if you pick courses for every quarter, how long, besides the core course, should I be taking the other two? Do they last throughout the year or is a course "over" in a quarter? Because then I'm thinking of taking some class in legal studies next/in a later quarter.
So does that work?

Also, it looks like I can't enroll for my math course because I never took AP Calc in HS and therefore didn't take the AP exam, so do I have to take the math placement exam? And how will that affect my enrollment, because the exam is on the 20th and classes are almost full..?

I'm srsly overwhelmed by the number of courses and the fact I can only really pick 2 besides the core course, because I want to start without a crazy heavy workload.. Btw, in terms of # of courses and the courses themselves, which ones seem to be the most popular so I know I'm doing the right thing lol?

Advisors recommend three 5-credit classes (core, class for your major, GE) for the first quarter, so you have that right.
You’ll have to wait until the week we move to take the math placement test and enroll. For math 19A you’ll need to have a score of 40/60. It looks like they still have a good amount of seats in both sessions of 19A as of now. And yeah it fulfills the MF general ed requirement.

And yeah, each course is a quarter long, at least that I know of. You can take other classes in the winter and spring quarters.

Math 19A is going to be a popular choice among the science crowd.

Intro to Networking, Astronomy, personal computers and Econ courses were all popular choices for frosh.
