Oxbridge type tutorials

I just visited the campus with DD and have to tell you that I was mesmerized, even though it rained like crazy!
I remember hearing a few years back about Oxbridge tutorials, but then it faded out of my mind until I actually saw one at Williams! Is it really such an amazing experience as it seems to be? I would love to hear from current students and parents. Any other schools in the US offering this kind of classes?

Hi Kelowna, I’m glad that you and your daughter made it to Williams, even in the rain.

My son took a couple of tutorials during his time at Williams – one in art history and one in studio art. He considered them wonderful opportunities to interact one on one with a professor and to stretch his thought process both orally and in writing (and in the case of the studio tutorials, visually.) The negative was that he found the restriction of being paired with just one other student somewhat limiting.

I don’t know of any other U.S. college that offers Oxford style tutorials, at least not on such a wide and deep basis.

The hallmark of all LACs, and especially Williams, are the small seminar configurations – 8 to 12 students and one professor. These are classes he enjoyed the most and and felt he benefited the the most from.

I took one. It was amazing–I learned more from it than the rest of my classes that year combined. Really, really makes you learn. No joke.
