Oxford College of Emory or University of Miami???

Which school is better academically? I am double majoring in Psychology and Spanish. Should I go to the oxford college (waitlisted at the college of arts and sciences) over UM?? UM offered me a lot of financial aid, idk about oxford yet though.

I guess what I'm asking is, which school is more academically known???

Thanks!

Christena,
Since you will be transferring to Emory college after 2 years, as you know, your degree will be from Emory and not Oxford, so with respect to “more academically known”, both schools are , IMO, equally well known, but Emory wins on academics. That said, its hard to turn down a lot of financial aid, as both school are not inexpensive. When will you know what Oxford is offering?

I will be finding out what Oxford is offering me tonight at 7. I think that will have a lot to do with my decision. But if they are close in net price, idk what I’m gonna do lol

Didnt you say Emory was your first choice? It is a tough choice. Good luck.

Emory College of Arts and Sciences was my first choice, but I was waitlisted last night. So now I have Oxford College of Emory and UM to choose from. I guess you could say Oxford is still my first choice since it is Emory University.

The University of Miami is an amazing school but pretty much underrated on CC. It has amazing academics, people, campus scene, social life, environment, etc… If you get a huge amount of scholarship from there then get it. Oxford is sort of a school for Emory rejects. It has that stigma, and Emory - the real one - isn’t really that better than U of Miami.

While I disagree with much of the above post, (and the OP, being from FL, is probably quite familiar with UM), unless the OP can match the moneis from Miami, it may be a better choice. If Miami is offering $$ for all 4 years, any monies from Emory/Oxford should be confirmed as continuing for all 4, upon transfer from Oxford to Emory. Miami is a good school, but its not an “amazing” school, IMO.

I just got the financial aid from Oxford and I compared the costs. Oxford will cost me about $700 more than UM, at least for the first year. Everything from both schools is renewable I believe. This didn’t make or break my choice seeing as they are so close. However travelllinf costs would be more if I went to Oxford. So I guess my next question is should I visit Oxford Emory, I haven’t yet. Should I hold onto hope for getting of the CAS wait list?

I would definitely visit Oxford. It is really small and I have known several kids who made up their minds very quickly after visiting. Some thought it would be fine for two years, others knew it wouldn’t work for them.

My son went to Oxford for two years and is transferring next fall to the main Emory campus. my second one received a $24000 scholarship from UM and $10,000 in grant. however, he has decided to go to Emory with no financial incentives. Oxford is very strong academically and has tons of extracurricular activities for students. Its only drawback is its location in the woods and run down campus.

Would u say Oxford campus is in the middle of nowhere?

Which school is better for biology? Emory, university of miami, Tulane, or Holy Cross?

Emory without a doubt.

Christena - you really should visit Oxford before making your decision either way. Oxford is about a 25 minute drive from Emory. The campus is not near much but there are shuttles back and forth to the Emory campus. The campus is lovely, though a bit older. It is set up like a big rectangle with the quad in the middle. The kids who go there form very tight bonds with each other and do very well academically when they transfer to the main campus. I know a few kids from South Florida who are Emory graduates and started at Oxford. They loved their Oxford experience. That said, my son would not even consider Oxford. It is smaller than his high school and it was important to him to go to a bigger school.

Oxford is a great place for the right type of kid. It is small and nurturing. Visit and see if it is for you.

I love UMiami too btw. My son did also apply to UM. The vibe is very different there (as you probably know). We know many happy Canes as well.

I did visit Oxford and i have decided to go to UM! Thanks for all the input!
