So I just found out that I'm a finalist for Oxford Scholars...I was wondering if anyone else is also a finalist. How many people are we competing against? how many scholarships are awarded? I feel like there isnt a lot of information about Oxford Scholars no matter how hard I look for it

Hi Dale2011,

Our son just found out that he, too, is a finalist. The following are two things I have dug up on the Web:

1 per the Oxford at Emory Website:

Four-Year Scholar Recipient Statistics:
– Awarded 56
– Average GPA 3.92
– Average SAT 1428
– Average ACT 32

Scholarships range from half-tuition to full tuition, room, board & fees for all four years of an Emory education.

2 from last years Oxford Scholar Finalist Facebook page, a Liz Cappello posted:

Hi everyone!

My name is Liz Cappello. I am a Scholar here at Oxford and I work part time in the admission (SAA Coordinator). If you have any questions about the scholars program, please feel free to email me.

I am currently a sophomore and will be at the Atlanta campus in the Fall. If you have any questions about the Emory Scholars program, which you will be in once you move onto Emory College, I am quite familiar with the benefits in that program and feel free to ask me any questions!

Just so you know… not every scholar finalist will receive a FOUR year scholarship.

After Scholars Weekend you will receive one of the following:

Woodruff - Full tuition for four years with room and board
Dean’s - Full tuition for four years
Faculty - Half tuition for four years
Seney - $20,000 for two years ($10,000 per year)

I went through Scholars Weekend too. And yes, it was nerve-wrecking, but please remember to have some fun! You are meeting your future classmates! We have a lot of stuff for you to do while here, so have a good time!

Good luck everyone! I cannot wait to meet all of you later this month!

Hey guys, I think I have been named a finalist. I got the email that sent me to opus. There was a new communication that I could not open(tried various browsers w/ pop-ups disabled). The subject was Oxford Scholars finalist or something like that so I sure am thinking this is good news.
I did send an email to admissions a little while ago but I’m wondering if you could tell me the dates or any other details while I’m waiting for their response.
I hope I’m not getting excited over nothing but I think I must be a finalist, right?
Thanks! I hope I really am a finalist and I’ll get to meet you there!

Yes, I’m a finalist, too. Very excited about it. Does anyone know how many people are selected as finalists?

@couldbeworse - Here are a few relevant excerpts from the letter:

“On behalf of the Scholarship Committee, we invite you to Scholars Weekend 2011, which will be held on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26. You are required to attend both Friday and Saturday events in order to continue your eligibility to compete for the four year scholarships. Recipients of the four year scholarships are required to maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA and remain on the Oxford campus for four semesters.”

“We request that you arrive for registration no later than 1:00pm on Friday. All Scholars finalists are required to stay with an Oxford student overnight in a residence hall on Friday night. When you arrive, you will need to register at Candler Hall, which is the first building on your left as you enter campus. If you would like to attend a 10:40am or an 11:45am class, please make travel plans accordingly. Dress for the weekend is business casual – for men, slacks and a collared shirt is appropriate and for women, a nice pant or skirt outfit is appropriate – for the individual and group interviews and the Dean’s Dinner. For other events, casual attire is acceptable. You will also need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, towels, and shower shoes (flip-flops are great).”

“All meals will be provided throughout the weekend for Scholars finalists. Parents are welcome to accompany their students to campus. However, parents are only permitted to attend activities on Friday until 1:00pm. We ask parents to provide their own accommodations.”

Also, you have to RSVP by February 9th. The RSVP form itself involves two short answers of about 250 words: what you would contribute to the Oxford community, and what you wish Oxford had asked about you in the application process.

in 07/08, there were 2 Woodruff scholars and 10 Dean’s scholars. If a Woodruff declines, a Dean’s is moved up. But if a Dean’s declines or moves up to a Woodruff, a Faculty scholar is not moved up. Also, there is a continuee scholarship (maybe 3? can’t remember). Any student, except Dean and Woodruff scholars, are eligible. You have to do really well and be recommended by faculty to apply, but the continuee scholarship pays full tuition for junior and senior year at Emory. So if you are awarded a Faculty or Seney award, or none at all, and work hard, you can still earn full tuition for your last 2 years. I have had 2 daughters as Dean scholars, one already graduated, and one currently a senior. I don’t remember all the details, but would be glad to answer a question if I can. Good luck to everyone :)

Thanks for the info. I’m happy to be a finalist (if I really am!) but the timing kind of sucks as that’s the same weekend as performances of our winter theater production and I have a lead (and it is our senior year and I played a lot of bit parts in the earlier years!). Oh, well…don’t know why but I had a feeling something was going to conflict on that weekend. Well, guess I’ll decide when the admission folks confirm I’m a finalist. It seems pretty clear I’m required to be there to stay in consideration for a scholarship and it might even be fun.
I’m thinking I’ll be seeing you at Oxford in February and we’ll have to get the understudy cranking on learning my part. Thanks again for the reply.

@couldbeworse - I’m actually in a similar situation. I have a major academic competition that Friday, and not only am I co-captain of the team, but I am also the only one who can cover my category. (Plus my sponsor is scary and shall be extremely angry if I’m not there.) It shall be interesting deciding how this will turn out.

I just knew things were going to get crazy as this whole process headed into the end game at the same time we’re trying to finish our senior years.

I seee… thanks so much MeadowBrookCourt

this is also super helpful I can plan in advancee…

I also have a similar problem @z.exodus and @couldbeworse… huge dance competition that saturday afternoon. I e-mailed someone in charge and she gave the schedule for the weekend, and the shuttle takes us back to the airport at around 3. Wonder if I could leave earlier? I only live an hour or so away by plane so Im hoping i can still make it

has anyone received a confirmation email or something after submitting the form online saying that youre going?
i confirmed but have yet to hear backk… hmm…
and my flight lands at 9:50 and the shuttle leaves at 10. i marked tht I was taking the shuttle on the form but do you think they would wait for me? lol

dont want to be stranded in ATL

Hi dale2011,

Our son did not receive a confirmation email either.

Does anyone know how many Woodruff scholars are finalists? And how many are awarded?
