Oxy Fall 2013 Applicants (class of 2017)

lalalandmachine - Well done, congratulations!!! I am in the EXACT same position (but I’m in England), I hope I’m as lucky as you… I need a hell of a lot of aid too which makes me think its very unlikely I’ll get in… I wish I could have visited Oxy in the flesh, because then they’d see for themselves how much I really want to go. I had a student skype interview which went well, but it was more of an info session. But, alas, we’ll see in a few days!

FWIW, the package they offered us was pretty generous. They have a good rep in that regard.

Hey guys ! I got in and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna go there ! The college looks like a perfect fit for me ! I received my admission package yesterday through the mail in Dubai  Good luck everyone !

Congrats, Sarah! I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting my decision today, if it’s priority mail.

I’m keeping my hopes low because I was pretty crushed from a couple of rejections, but we’ll see. I’d love to go to Occidental.

Do Decisions ever show on their portal? Even after all letters are recieved?

Our daughter has done fairly well in the admissions process overall, but Oxy has emerged as one of the top picks. She is in an IB Diploma program. One girl applied ED and got in.Two others heard on Saturday; our daughter did not. Hoping it is just the mail. The other two girls have slightly higher stats, but neither of them plans to attend. One is a National Merit semifinalist. Our daughter spent the night and attended classes…she is the only one out of the three who wrote about her visit to Oxy (after arriving from a snow storm). Here are her stats: 3.7 (UW), 4.6 (W), 33 (ACT composite) and 35 (writing). Captain (swimming), state qualifier-swimming, Swim Coach in summer… Co-President (Invisible Children),VP (National Honor Society), Spanish National Honor Society, Executive Council-Student Government, Volunteer—local Children’s Hospital…singer- regional multicultural choir…did some other sports as well, but not as seriously as swimming. The other girls swim too. We are from out-of-state, if it matters.

Worried that they won’t accept all three…hoping something comes in the mail today…we are actually out-of-town.

Rejected. o: However, I didn’t show any interest whatsoever and I hear they take that into account. I wish I’d had time to go out and visit, but… since I’m from Connecticut, that wasn’t realistic during school.

Congrats to those of you who got in, and be assured that the date on which you receive your decision is not influenced by the nature of the decision.

What were your stats?

Wow I have been accepted! I was seriously concerned I would not get in. I only had an 1880 on my SATs too! I take full IB though and I have 3.9 GPA. I think my ECs and enthusiasm really compensated for not showing interest.

Swimsoc -

2040 SAT, 8 AP Classes (Two last year, earned a 4 and a 5).
3.2 GPA because I had cancer both my sophomore and earlier in my senior year, and because family life at home is really bad so my study time is often limited. I’m pretty sure this is why they rejected me, but I’ve been accepted to more selective schools, so who knows.
I work two jobs, one of which I created my own business out of, I’ve played piano for twelve years and violin for eight, I’m the head editor of my school’s literary magazine, I’m on the varsity tennis team, I co-founded and co-run the photography club, I’m on varsity debate, I’m in the art club, and I wrote, recorded, co-performed, self-funded, self-promoted and co-produced my own EP, which is on iTunes.
My essay was strong, and my recommendations were fantastic.

I thought my extracurriculars and life story, as well as an okay SAT, would help me get into Occidental, but I’m not too sad. I’ll end up somewhere I love regardless.

All that worrying for nothing. Swim Coach called yesterday and large priority mail envelope from Oxy…we are away,so she will get it when she gets home. Serentic, I sent you an email. I know that you will land somewhere fabulous…

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd I got waitlisted. Why are college admissions so depressing?

Accepted!!! Finally some good news…

I think it was my essays that got me in.

Im a US Citizen born and raised in Athens, Greece. My second language is English and I’ve spent my whole life in Greece. I studied there in a Greek public school until my sophomore year of high school, where then I moved to a US boarding school.

GPA: 3.7 unweighted

advanced courses: AP/IB HL world lit. IB Economics SL. IB Precalc SL.

The reason my math level is low is because we had a different method of teaching in Greece. That’s the reason my Math SAT is screwed up too.

SAT Scores:
600 CR 640 WR 530 MATH Superscored; 1770 total. (low, i know!)

TOEFL iBT: 111

Activities

Captain and first singles of the varsity tennis team
tennis for 11 years. won several tournaments and titles in greece.
piano for 9 years. played in many recitals in greece.
Founder of the European cultural diversity club in my school.
Student Pilot
Admission Tour Guide
Volunteer at eye center
some minor work experience

I got rejected. I am absolutely crushed, words can’t describe…

Congratulations to everyone that got in, please be grateful for the opportunity on behalf of those who tried all they could and still didn’t get in and would do anything to be in your position.

I think its because I was an international student who needed a lot of financial aid…
Man, if only they knew just how much I worked and how much I wanted it…
:(

To make matters worst - they were my last shot, all my other applications were rejected too.

S - accepted by UCLA, UC Berkeley, Grinnell, Oberlin, Occidental, Colby and a few more. As of now, Colby is is his #1 choice. He has arrange to visit and stay overnight at Occidental before making the final decision. How does Occidental compare to Colby beside the weather? Thank you!

I’m really sorry to hear about your rejection, Britishstudent. I’m a transfer student now, but I know how hard it is to deal with a bunch of rejections. I hope you can find another option that works out well for you!

Thanks als96 :)! I’m happy to hear you transferred successfully and I wish you the best!!

Frisesbichon,

Our daughter is looking at Oxy and Colby as well. She has received better financial aid at Occidental. Colby will be more homogenous than Oxy. As well, there are in very different locations (urban v. rural). Our daughter will major in science…both are well known and excellent academically. She is also considering Lake Forest and Puget Sound…awaiting to hear about FA from Bucknell.

This is kinda a late post, but I was accepted!!! I think my essays are what got me in because I showed a lot of interest in the school (it was one of my top choices). Otherwise, my stats weren’t that great: 1880 SAT and 4.3 unweighted GPA (on 5.0 scale). Congrats to everyone else who was accepted!
