PA Program & The Honors College?

I'm currently a junior in a Michigan high school, but I'm very interested in becoming a future Spartan in 2013--I just love most everything about State and I feel it fits me well.

Introductions aside, I'd like to know a few things about some of the opportunities available at MSU.

For those of you in it, how is the PA Program? Would you consider it a rewarding and intellectually stimulating experience? Is it difficult to keep up with during your freshman year, when you're first acclimating to a new situation at college? Do I have an option of choosing what topic/field I would like to research? If it helps--if I get in hopefully--I would like to do something Chemically- or Biologically-related.

And can someone in the Honors College be simultaneously part of a residential college like LB or JMC? Which dorm should an Honors College student live in if he is interested in a premedical/scientific route (would you suggest Holmes)?

Thanks for any responses and suggestions.

I’m not in the PA, so I can’t answer your question but…

Yes! Absolutely! I am in RCAH and it seems like half of our college is in the HC. I highly suggest that you join LB and then you’ll automatically live in Holmes. I’m a huge advocate for the RCs at MSU.

Thanks Romani for your reply.
How long have you been at MSU (you don’t need to respond if you don’t want to)?

I love the residential college concept at MSU as well. That’s another one of the reasons I’d like to go green in 2013. :)

How’s Holmes as a dorm? Is it noisy, quiet, fun, etc.?

I’m a 3rd year and I’ve been in RCAH the whole time. I love the RC concept and implementation and it was one of the main reasons why I chose MSU over U of M (I didn’t like U of M’s RC nearly as much).

I honestly don’t know too much about Holmes- I’ve been in there once and it was only briefly. Most of my friends in LB love it though- as long as you make it through the first year (I guess there’s some weeder courses??). Someone on here is in LB but for the life of me, I can’t remember who. Hopefully, she’ll come on here and chime in.

Thanks for your help, Romani. If I ever need help later on, I know who to contact.

I found out that the Honors College has a floor in Holmes Hall, so even if I decide not to list my major as LB, I can still be there and take classes there too, which is nice.

Do the Honors College and the LB both have rolling admissions? When’s the earliest I can apply?

I got accepted into the Honors College & Lyman Briggs. When we visited the Honors College last spring, we were told to apply as early as possible to LB since if you apply late, there is a waiting list. I applied in early September and got in. The application usually goes online sometime in August for admissions. I am planning to live on Honors floor if I go to MSU.

Then I’ll be sure to send my application this September as well. Thanks benza.

the PA program’s benefits really depend on what professor/subject you get placed in. As an international relations major, I helped out an international relations professor with the editing and publishing of his books. It was super easy and I rarely worked the 8-10 hours we were technically supposed to (just because my professor never gave me enough stuff to do). But other people have found their PA to be very academically challenging and do a lot of cool stuff (especially if you are in science/computers/engineering disciplines). I seem to remember you fill out some sort of form that tells the HC about your interests so they can match you up with a professor that does work similar to what you are interested in.

If you live in Holmes or east complex in general that is where most of the science/pre-med kids live.

Also, I could be wrong, but Holmes is relatively far away from everything else isn’t it? (lr maybe I’m imagining things :P) Not that that is a reason to not do LB but just an fyi kind of thing. But also, if you don’t have LB as your major, they won’t put you in Holmes even if you put it as your first choice on the honors housing form (that’s what they told me during an honors college personal visit)

@fa-la-la-lena
Thank you very much for your valuable insight into the program. I really appreciate it.

I hope I have what it takes to get into the program since I’ve heard that it’s an amazing and stimulating experience.

@Isaac
Do you think a bike would sufficiently get me around campus from Holmes? Would there be a problem in getting across Red Cedar River?

And you said that if I don’t choose Lyman Briggs as my major, there’s a big possibility that I won’t get into Holmes. If I choose LB as my major, however, then I would be in Holmes for sure, right?

I see a lot of kids on bikes, I would definitely bring one. I’m pretty sure there are bridges (for cars and walking/biking) for dealing with the river… I haven’t heard any complaints about it and to be honest I’ve never had any problems walking/biking over it (it’s like I barely even notice apart from the pretty scenery :slight_smile: ) and yeah Dr. German from the hc told me that if you don’t put lb as your major, you will not be housed there. But if it is your major then you kinda have to live there because it’s the whole purpose of a residential college :P

Thanks again Isaac.

If you don’t mind me asking, are you currently at Lyman Briggs?

Yeah if you don’t list lyman briggs you pretty much won’t have a chance at getting into holmes unless you are on the honors college floor / room with someone who is listed as lyman briggs. If you don’t do lyman briggs there is a chance that you could be placed in brody (the complete opposite side of campus) as you don’t get to choose the dorms you live in which would be a pain if you are taking lots of science classes. If you are interested in lyman briggs and would like to live in holmes, I would just sign up anyways because if you find out you don’t really like lyman briggs it is very easy to switch out (in comparison, it is not so easy to switch in).

@solidsteel no I’m not in lyman Briggs, I am currently a hs senior, I was planning on attending msu (engineering) but then I got into MIT so I will most likely go there. However, I live in east Lansing so I am very familiar with the university and the campus

Congratulations for your acceptance at MIT, Isaac!

Thanks! I am really excited :)
