It has always been my dream to go to college in New York City, and I am now between two schools. I have always achieved high grades in school, and I am graduating in the top 10% of my class. I plan to study Communications/ Journalism in college and I want to become an editor at a magazine.

I love Fordham Lincoln Center- it has great prestige and a focus on academics. I really liked Pace's campus, but the academics are weaker than Fordham, even at the Honors College there.

Pace offered me a large scholarship, while Fordham gave me very little. Would it be worth it to choose Fordham over Pace despite the fact that I would graduate with 80-100k in loans? Or should I choose the less expensive school and take advantage of its Honors Program and location?

My son is at Fordham Lincoln center and you are correct the academics is very very rigorous.

I think that being in NYC and taking advantage of internships is the key to making it. There are many many opportunities in NYC and it won’t matter really if you are attending Pace or Fordham. I think that attending Pace would be fine if you make sure that you take advantage of internships while you are in college and make the connection you need when you are finished school to get a job.

My S is a senior at Fordham LC and has been very happy there but he will graduate debt free. I’m sorry to say it but I just can’t recommend Fordham or any school that means you will graduate in debt for $80k assuming you can even borrow that much. My H had “only” $40k in loans and that was for law school, not undergraduate, so I have firsthand knowledge of just how tough it is to start your life with student loans!

Go to Pace Honors and make the most of every opportunity available. Good luck!

NO college, not even Harvard, is worth $80,000 in debt.
If you got into Pace+ Honors with a scholarship that makes it affordable, congratulations.
(Did you apply to Hunter, Baruch, CCNY, Queen’s? Don’t know if you still have time… then you’d be able to compare their offer with Pace’s. These would be better than Pace academically and might be cheaper/same price).
You still have a couple months before you commit anyway so try to apply to a couple more schools in the city?

My S went to Fordham RH and had a wonderful experience on every front (academic, social, etc) but as much as I love Fordham I’d avoid racking up all that debt and accept the large scholarship from Pace. The only thing I would add is that you may want to contact Fordham’s financial aid office to see if they might increase your scholarship before you accept the offer from Pace. Good luck wherever you end up.

Fordham is definitely better, and but for the money I would say go there. But I wouldn’t recommend borrowing $80K+ for undergrad. So yes, I agree - contact the financial aid office and see if they are willing to work with you, but otherwise you should go to Pace.

I believe the CUNY apps are due February 1, so you do still have a little time to apply there if you want. I agree that the CUNYs are better academically than Pace and they are pretty cheap for OOS students. The deadline for Macaulay Honors has already passed, though.

If there’s still time, apply to a couple CUNY’s (CCNY for the nice campus, Baruch for finance/business, Hunter or Queen’s in general). Don’t make any decision until you have admission letters you can compare, especially wrt to finances. Then, choose the cheapest option.
If Fordham can’t make you a better financial offer, then you shouldn’t go into so much debt to attend. Choose Pace if the CUNy’s didn’t come through, or a CUNY campus if you got admitted and costs are similar to Pace.
