I am currently starting my second semester of college and kind of "lost" my original award letter. My school does not have them posted online so I'm waiting till I return to school in a couple of days to confirm my questions. If there was nothing about being eligible for a loan on that package i received in the fall, does that mean I'm am not eligible for a loan? I live with my mother who is a single mother with very bad credit which I'm thinking may have been the problem? I just turned 18 in December and have no credit myself which will probably mean a 19% interest rate or more if I went to a bank. I received a very nice grant in the fall but I am currently I am having trouble paying for both books, tuition and gas(commuter student). I will not be able to work at the work study that I did last semester which is how the problem really how this problem came up. I am looking for a job now but it doesn't solve my problem for buying books in a couple days. Will I be able to maybe get my aid package reconsidered due to the conflict with my work study? I have already asked about scholarships but there are none given at my school for the spring semester. I have looked at fastweb.com but what I have heard its pretty impossible to win. Currently I have a GPA of 3.76, will that help? Thanks for any help. Sorry for the rambling its been quite a stressful week due to classes starting this Wednesday and I only have half the money needed for books. My parents have way too many bills of their own to even let me borrow the money needed. Again, thanks for your help.

I suggest going to the financial aid office at your school. They may have more money if you plead your case.

I'm surprised you don't qualify for a Stafford loan. Ask the FA office about an Unsubsidized Stafford loan. Your parents have to be turned down for a Parent PLUS loan, and then you qualify. Best rate but limited amount for each year.

Also, the FA office might have short term loans for books until a loan comes through. Good luck !!
