Soooo I've been thinking about what I'm going to do over the summer (the summer before senior year! Ahhh!) to make myself more appealing to top-tier colleges and I've come up with two options: get a job at Panera or volunteer at my local library. I can't do both, so I would love it if I could get some of your opinions! I know that neither are spectacular, but would colleges prefer to see me go out and make money to help myself through college or would it be better to do the rather ordinary volunteer service?

When it comes to specifics, I'm not poor and I have done other small volunteer things in the past, although all have been through the NHS. That's not to say that the extra money wouldn't help, though, as little as I would make doing a part-time job at close to minimum wage.

Well, extra money wouldn’t hurt. However, I think you should do community service related to what you want to major in… but make the most of what you are doing. If it’s hard to find something that is not related to what you want to major in… then I would do miscellaneous opportunities that you wouldn’t be able to do very often. Try new things.

If you are working at Panera, don’t just stick to your job. Do something more than what you are required. Something interest might happen that you might be able to put in your essay. Maybe you encounter an interesting customer or co-worker? You’ll make a new friend? Learn something new?

Honestly, just learn and enjoy what you are doing so you make the most of every second you spend. :)

Those are very good points! I would want to major in something in the humanities, but I suppose that just caring for books doesn’t exactly reinforce your interest in being an English major. I think I’ll go with Panera then. Thank you two so much! :)
