I like to get some advice if I could from those in the know. My son is interested in the M&T program but is also a recruited athlete in football. Would he realistically be able to handle football and M&T or should he just move on from having to choose only 1?
I would say go ahead and look into it. Otherwise, he may always wonder if it was an option. The M&T program is very highly selective. What year is he in HS?
@moscott you need to talk to some M&T students. I know a number of students who have been in the program over the years. It is very, very challenging. My instinct is that it would be very difficult for all the but the brightest and most dedicated. Actual students will be your best resource.
You should check the athletic site roster, as it usually lists the program the student is enrolled in. I would be very surprised if any recruited football players were enrolled in M&T. In fact, I would be very surprised if there were a high percentage of engineering students on the team (especially juniors and seniors). A BSE will typically require an extra class per semester and many coaches are hesitant to having their players take a heavier courseload than needed. If you have questions about M&T enrollment I would start by asking the coach that was recruiting your son.
Would he be okay pursuing a single degree (either engineering or business) at Penn instead of M&T?If he did an engineering degree he could do an engineering entrepreneurship minor and also take some classes at Wharton. If he did a business degree he could take classes at the engineering school and maybe do the engineering entrepreneurship minor offered by the engineering school. M&T might prove a bit too much for a recruited athlete. That said, your son seems very bright and maybe he could handle it. You never know. There is the option of starting out as M&T and then dropping one of the two degrees if it proves too much to handle.
@Penn95 I don’t think he opposed per say to a degree in computer science but he is extremely intrigued by both the CS and management aspect that M&T offers. That said that is part of the lure of PENN is the M&T program. If he just goes for the CS then other schools with “better” CS programs come into the mix and of course fit as well.
Not sure how much of a difference it would make but he should be coming in with some credits due to AP. I know it’s different at UPENN but at UF he would come in with about 60 credits.
@moscott this is not a complete run down (and you may have seen this) but I would be your son could hit up a few of these kids via social media and get some info. Or some of the more recent grads on the Alumni page. Probably can find them via work emails or linkedin.
As far as CEAS or Wharton. There are for sure successful athletes at Penn (including Football players) in both those schools. M&T is just its own bear of a program. Difficult for most students, even if just from a time management perspective.
