Are any other parents going to orientation in June and do you know what to expect? We opted to stay on campus, sounded like fun, just wondering what is in store.

My parents said that there is a lot of information that is useful for first-time college parents. If you’ve already had a kid go to college, there’s a lot of overlap. That said, they did think it was useful, and it included opportunities to see some of Boston. My mom hadn’t been able to come to visit before I chose Northeastern, so it really put her at ease about me going so far away for college.

Thanks for that info. I found this on Huffington Post about Northeastern parent orientation. <a href=“7 Things I Learned At My Son's College Orientation | HuffPost Post 50”>http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3518211/

We had fun when we went three years ago-staying the dorm was nice and we enjoyed the programs and took the night we had to take a walk and we ended up at Fenway Park.

I thought the best programs were about the coop program, international opportunities, and financing the education. We went to the one on letting go but I thought that was kind of unnecessary but many people seemed to be very intense about the subject.

We learned more about the school, he had a good time doing his best to avoid us, and it was a pretty cheap mini-vacation in Boston. One thing I really liked about it was getting to walk around all the surrounding areas and the campus-yes it does have a campus and it is quite nice and the trees and plants were just beautiful-you would walk around a corner and there is the middle of a bustling campus and city you would often find a quiet little spot with somewhere to sit and some very nice trees and flowers.

I am wondering if it is time to start a NEU Parents thread-I know other schools have them and if people think that is something that would be a good thing to do on this forum?

Our D is heading for her Middler year, and my wife & I attended the orientation 2 years ago. We stayed in the dorms, and had a great time. To 2nd pepper’s comments, the co-op orientation was great, as was the financial aid education. More on those two…

Co-op - our D is in civil engineering, and we were able to go hear the civil engineering co-op lead (Tillman) give the engineering pitch on co-ops. Audience was maybe 200, and there was ample time for Q&A. We also were able to see him 1 on 1 after the presentation. Very accessible and worthwhile. Our D is on her first co-op now at a structural engineering firm in Waltham. She elected to stay in the dorm for spring semester, then at home (we live 40 miles outside boston) for the final two months (co-op runs Jan-end of June).

Financial aid education - We were very impressed on the fact based discussion of aid that had a large segment based on the impact of interest compounding on loans. If you’re not eligible as a family for subsidized loans, the interest is not only higher, it starts compounding right away vs. upon graduation. They had graphs showing how a loan can grow by X amount w.r.t. initial principle by the time you graduate 5 years later and start paying. No other school we toured went into anything at all on this topic.

Besides those two details, it was just plain fun. Our dorm was a 1 bedroom apartment vs. open double (likely luck of the draw), and we bumped into flocks of kids on orientation having a good time at events such as the night time ice cream social.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. We are attending with our daughter at the end of the month and looking forward to it.

Pepper03 - Northeastern has a parents discussion board that you may want to join - it’s not a part of College Confidential. Lots of questions and good information. If you don’t know the link, you’ll info about signing up during orientation.

Thanks for the info. Just went onto the parent boards and set up a profile.

Thanks I know that board and it is good-just wondering if we should set one up here like other schools on CC have.

@krnBoston my son is going into his fourth year and you may in fact hear him speaking at orientation! If I say more I will blow my cover. :)

@BillysDad2014 my son did the same last year on coop as we live about an hour from where his coop is-he loved on campus through April and commuted through the end of June and they asked him to stay through the summer (this happened with many of his friends) so he worked through Mid-August-he saved enough money to pay his most of his living expenses for this school year.

My daughter is going to be a middler in the fall, so we won’t be at orientation this year.

OOPS! Parents of middlers in an orientation thread. :)

Just got back from orientation B. My husband and I had a good time. We lucked out with our own suite in international village E . Good weather and other friendly parents made the event enjoyable. I highly recommend it. You can follow them on twitter at husky 101.

Pepper03 - good deal on the co-op extension. My D finished yesterday, and looking forward to the next two months off. She’s combining BS & MS in 5 years by adding a couple of summer sessions and limiting co-ops to two vs. three, so she will be either doing classes or co-op the next 3yrs.

anghad - Nice to see you had a good time at orientation, with a private suite no less!
