parent plus loan WANTS social security number wrong?!

Is the Parent Plus loan FOR parents who are students themselves, or for parents with children who are students?

My parents and I are both confused about the application, which asks for the SSN of the STUDENT. When they enter my SSN, we get an error message explaining that the Borrower's SSN cannot be the same as the student. Does this mean my parents have to put their SSN under STUDENT INFORMATION?

Thank you in advance for answers. Financial aid and college bureaucracy can be so frustrating

The Parent PLUS loan is for parents or grad students. Your information doesn’t belong there since your parents are bothering the loan.

don’t worry about it- fill it out with the parents information- they have their phrasing wrong.

I have this same problem. I’m freaking out because the semester is going to start soon and I need to pay the fee bill. The application keeps saying that I can’t put in the same SSN and DOB as the borrower even though the account belongs to me. Is it really okay to just fill it out with the parents information?

If you are an undergrad student…you PARENTS take out the Parent Plus loan, not you. Your parent SS number is what goes on the loan application…not yours (the student).

Your parents are the ones applying for the Plus loan. That is why their info is what is required.

Is that how it’s supposed to work? The account is registered under my SSN and name but when I start filling out the SSN and DOB for the “Student Information” section of the PLUS application, I get the error that says I can’t enter the same SSN and DOB as the borrower/

Here is my take…and I could be wrong…I’m sure someone will clarify.

I believe the borrower is the PARENT…so the parent info is used for the borrower.

Then the student info is used for the student.

This is for the Parent Plus Loan.

The borrower is the parent not the student.

For undergrads, the PLUS loan will be in the parent name, so the parent is the borrower. However, the eligibility for that loan is determined by the student information … you are borrowing on behalf of your child, who is the student. So borrower is parent, student is child.

And be sure to use the SSN for the parent whose name is on the PLUS application! I have seen people use the wrong SSN … or the wrong PIN to sign the MPN for that loan.

Sounds like the Parent does not have an account of their own to login with. They need to setup their own account and not use yours.
