Parent recommendation letter???

Hi
I’m a senior in high school.

I received some college papers from my counselor the other day.

I’m examining them really closely rn and I noticed that they are recommending to get a letter of rec from a parent.

I think this is a bit strange? Is it common for people to get a letter of rec from mom and dad?

Thanks

Maybe your GC will use it to write their rec? We had to fill out a parent brag sheet for our DDs’ counselor to use as a reference in their recs

I suspect it’s just so the counselor has more info about you. But there are some colleges that will ask for an optional rec from a parent or relative.

You can talk to your GC to confirm. Likely it is a letter from your parents to the GC to give more information about you.

On the Common app, when you add a recommender, you can choose “Parent”. So it must be fairly common if they have a whole separate category…

Just a guess . . . The parent recommender option is for kids who are homeschooled.

Our HS also asked parents to provide a letter sharing info that the GC might not know about your child. For instance, I shared that one son earned Eagle and another was a gallon blood donor.

In terms of colleges, when my D was applying for schools, SUNY Geneseo asked for a parent letter. I did one and my friend didn’t. My D didn’t get in and hers did, but her D also had a much better GPA and more course rigor, so even if our letters were equal, it wasn’t enough.
