I am double posting - first time filling out. This question seems like it should be easy but I can't find an answer.

I am on disability retirment from the library. I don't pay in to SS so instead of traditional disability you retire. I receive a 1099 each year not a W-2. On the form Questions 89 & 90 ask for parents earning specifically off W-2. There is no where else I can report this income because I do pay taxes on it. Anyone have experience with this or can directme to a site with info. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, mommusic, I respectfully disagree with this advice. I would definitely not pay anyone to fill out the forms. My advice would be to call the FAFSA folks on Monday and ask them. They are really nice and helpful. These companies who charge money to fill out the FAFSA can really be scam artists. FAFSA is FREE. Use the phone!

A few weeks ago I had a similar question concerning where to put my husband's unemployment income on the Fasfa. The amount was included in the adjusted gross income, so it was reported as part of the total, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

THe response to my question was that there was no place to put it, but again, it is reported in the AGI.

I assume your situation is similar. When they ask for W-2 income I think it is so they can determine the amount of SS paid for their calculations. So I think, but of course I would suggest you also get advice elsewhere if possible, that there is no question on the FASFA where you have to specifically put that amount.

Do NOT pay someone to help you with the FAFSA. They have a help line that you can call. Do that to answer your questions. There have been a number of stories about FAFSAs that were not properly filed by places that charge. The first F in FAFSA stands for FREE. It's just about the ONLY thing that is free with regards to college.
