My father was unemployed for a few years up until I entered the 11th Grade. My mother worked part time during this time to pay for groceries, expenses, etc. Should I explain this in the Additional Information section of the Common App even though my grades were not affected?

Unless you helped support your family, I see no reason to mention this.

I disagree-if your family was experiencing distress but you were resilient and did well in school-that seems relevant. Schools are trying to attract students from lower SES backgrounds. Also is is relevant for Financial aid.
