How much does it really help to have a parent who went to UVA if I am OOS? They say that I get put into the "in state" pool, but is that really accurate?

It's very helpful to be a legacy when applying OOS. Basically when you're moved to the "in-state" pool by being a legacy, you go from the regular 20% OOS acceptance rate to around 45% instate acceptance rate.

I know they say that they put legacy kids in the instate pool, but the numbers seem to speak otherwise. I don't remember the specific figures but sooooo many more kids at UVA come from Virginia... it makes me a little nervous

Maybe because in-state kids pay taxes to support the school, and legacies don't. More VA kids get in that anyone, because they have to maintain the 66% IS percentage. But, of the 33% OOS, it's MUCH easier to get one of those spots as a legacy. If a 3.7 with legacy applies as OOS, and a 3.9 applies, the 3.7 will most likely win (same as 3.7s IS are accepted)

It doesn't sound like you've thought about this issue very much, OP. How many legacy applicants do you think there are every year? How many non-legacy applicants from Virginia do you think there are?

This is an issue that has never been entirely clear to me. Do oos legacy's become part of the 68% of instate admitted students? I was never sure if this was a "instate status" was a review standard or if they were taking spots (68% of 3000 places) that are supposed to be reserved for VA residents.

Does anyone have documentation of this?
t/y

OOS legacies are counted in the out of state pool. They are merely reviewed on the same level as instate applicants. Not that hard to grasp.

Cav has it right. OOS Legacies have a similar admit rate to Virginians. They are still out of state students in the eyes of the University.

Here is some additional information from the Alumni Association, if you haven't already seen it.

I highly recommend using the Alumni Liaison services.

does it help if our grandparents went to UVa, because I just found out that my grandfather graduate from there, also how would I indicate that on the application, most applications have a section that asks if a relative attended but I dont remember UVa having one

Sorry flash, it only helps if your parents (I think that includes step-parents too) went to UVA. If you search legacy, you'll see that Dean J has commented on this before.

Seriously, this issue has been beat to death.

That's true chessie, but if you notice, the person who asked the original question is new to cc, and also a high school student. Hopefully, next year he/she will stick around and help the new crop of prospectives navigate the forum. My son was never interested in the these forums..it's not his thing..but, I'm sure as a parent, I asked a few questions I'd like to take back before I understood how to search the archives. I'll probably ask a few more redundant questions (although, I'll try not to ;)) as my next kid is going through the process.
