Hey! Next year I can start applying ED for colleges, and I want to apply to NYU. I know I want to go there, but my parents don't approve. They said they won't sign the forms. I just wanted to know if I can apply without their consent. I will be 18 when I attend, but does it matter how old I am now. They would prefer me to go to a school like Vanderbilt or Emory on the south. I would really appreciate them approving, but if they don't I would still really want to attend.

Who will be paying?

Why do they not approve? Could it be that you will need financial aid, so that NYU will be unaffordable unless you get a (hard to get) big merit scholarship?

In any case, financial aid assumes that your parents will contribute unless you are 24 years old, married, or a veteran of the armed forces. So your parents have significant control through the money aspect.

Unless you are willing to blow all $215,000 of your summer job money on NYU, I would listen to my parents.

Smart parents.

Being a minor, you won’t be able to sign the ED agreement. But since you’ve not shared their rationale, how can any of us evaluate your situation? About that $200K thing – that’s real, after tax money. Your family got that in the bank?

I do NOT want to rain on your parade, and I DO encourage you to dream big, work hard, and go for it. BUT…

NYU was also my daughter’s dream school. She also applied ED, with our full support and backing, and was accepted. My kid had a 4.2 GPA, an IB diploma, and 2200 on her SATs, got two full-ride offers at other school via rolling admission acceptances, and is being considered for a big award at one of our flagship state schools, so we figured she was a shoe in for merit aid.

And THEN she had to turn down her admission because NYU rarely gives substantial financial aid, and we didn’t know that it until too late. It was crushing. As posters above have said, unless your family can pay the full cost of NYU’s $59,000 per year out of your own pockets, you may be very disappointed.

Also rethink the idea of ED altogether. Read alot of posts here on CC’s parent forum. My family just got a crash course in the ins and outs of ED and have learned that 1) you may get more fiancial aid as a regular decision (RD) applicant, 2) it may be harder than you think to back out of an ED acceptance iof you change your mind.

Just my 2 cents…

glido - you are funny.

If your parents won’t pay for NYU, you’re out of luck. Do you need financial aid? What is it that they prefer about Vandy and Emory?

And even if they do, are they willing to use it for NYU?

Defy, pay close attention to what kpgriswold said. I know only two things about NYU. I know that it’s in Greenwich Village, which makes it incredibly attractive to many people. And from my time on College Confidential, I know that NYU is notorious for rotten financial aid. IMO, the only people who should apply ED to NYU are people whose families can pay the full cost of tuition, room, board, books, travel and incidentals, and will pay it gladly.

Vanderbilt and Emory aren’t exactly cheap either. OP- is cost a factor in your parents’ disapproval of NYU? Or is it more of a location thing?

whats wrong with vandy and emory?
