Good point, alu. I hadn't noticed the comment about the Ice center. Tho... hmmm... come to think of it, isn't there a lot of "ice" in Miami? ;)

Ah um [clears throat] we are talking about Miami University, the ONLY Miami University which happens to be in Oxford, Ohio and was a college before Florida was a state.

The picture thing is news to me on the app. D has reviewed apps from past years with a fine toothed comb to plan her application and has never seen that requirement on the supplement(neither have I seen it requested). My thought is it is an urban legend. Although I will admit the student body is exceptionally attractive - LOL!

All joking aside, for generations the school has published a "baby book" with freshmen class members' pictures and a brief bio (HS, hometown, interests & major), we had to send in a picture for that publication as soon as we were admitted and committed. Maybe your friend is confusing that with the application. Back in my day they didn't have facebook (OR caller ID) - perish the thought youngsters. As a study break or to procrastinate from doing home work, we would page through the baby book and randomly call cute boys. I had assumed that with the computer and all that is available to students, they had done away with it, maybe they haven't?

Such fun memories...

believersmom-
Just now catching up on this thread. We live within two miles of Lassiter ( our kids are in private school, though). If you live in Georgia, you know that today or probably any Saturday between the hedges would best be experiences under the hedges in front of an ice block and a portable fan. The heat index today is over 107 degrees.

For anyone checking in on this thread- can someone give me an idea of the reliability of College ******* ratings on each school's drug scene? Twins are trying to finalize a list of colleges left to visit/apply to. They can handle ( or believe they can) the drinking scene, but DO NOT want to be in an environment where drugs are pretty much a given.

For example- S. was looking at Rollins- College *******'s grade of drug scene was ( I think) B-. So,,,,now he thinks perhaps he should eliminate schools where admin. look the other way. SandD were in public school until junior year and had daily exposure to students who were stoned, bringing marijuana in sandwiches, etc - in honors and AP classes. So,,,they have not been sheltered. Any advice????

We have seen the Miami supplement to the Common App, and it does not ask for a photo. So funny -- I have heard the "everyone needs a North Face jacket" comment, but never that!

GAtwins-
Can't help you too much on a specific organization or website's rating but am personally VERY familar with UW-Madison. Many, many, many, things go on there (including drug use) in what I would say is larger than average amounts. State street has a lot (IMO) of "head shops" and other places where one can buy drug paraphanalia (sp?) openly, and they are always trying to legalize marijuana there. My D, who likes to go and have lunch and people watch in Madison, decided long ago that it would not be an environment condusive to learning for her (thank heavens). But many people do get a fine education there. While UW-Madison is thought of as a Big 10, american school, in reality it is more of an international university and getting more so all the time. When I think bigger universities, the only US school I think of as being more "anything goes and does..." is Colorado University - Boulder.

Miami is about the farthest thing from being drug riddled, although I am CERTAIN that some students do smoke pot. Beer traditionally has been more the drug of choice there.

I know several students at Iowa, one of which transfered from Madison after one semester partly because of the party scene. I know drinking goes on there, but haven't heard or seen a lot of evidence of drugs or pot smoking(and because of the nature of my relationship with these students I probably would have).

As to the others on your twins' list, can't help.

If you hear any more, please share with us...

dbwes-
LOL-the Northface thing always cracks me up. No matter which campus I am on, it seems like Northface is the college uniform of choice.

ED deadlines are approaching and students are starting to get serious about applications--time to bump our mutual support group back to life. Where are you kids in the process?

DD has her final list pretty much set:

Connecticut College
Muhlenberg
Clark University
Northeastern

All have strengths in her areas of interest and are realistic choices; no real reach schools on the list. All the essays are done except for one of the short, institution-specific supplemental ones. All-in-all, it was a pretty smooth, painless process. The English teacher even made the college essay one of the writing assignments, God bless her.

My son is all done with his apps. He applied to 5 schools, and has been accepted at 3 of them so far (rolling). Waiting to hear on the other two. One of them doesn't release decisions until late February, so it will be a while.

In rough order of preference:
University of Maryland-College Park
University of Wisconsin-Madison (accepted)
University of Missouri-Columbia (accepted as a direct entry into their journalism school)
Indiana University-Bloomington
Ohio University-Athens (accepted as a direct entry into their journalism school)

You are sooo lucky oregonianmom!! All done and 3 admits!! thats great!!

DS got 3 apps out and one (college) scholarship app out in the past few days or so. Still has 2 colleges (well, one or 2, he is debating, but since I just heard there is an earthquake in CA, my thoughts of school in CA are dropping, between the fires, floods, earthquakes, etc). Anyway, I digress. DS still has 3 (college merit) scholarships to do, and some outside scholarships too. We are sloooowly getting there. Challenging process, but soon this too shall pass.....

Two apps. done, one to go (this afternoon.)

One scholarship app. done, one to go (this afternoon, just a final review). Maybe more later, if there is a later.

Pushing deadlines all the way, overscheduling with work, babysitting, homework, clubs, etc.

I need to tell her to say no more often. I try, but looks like I need to try harder.

She's burned out already, not sure she wants to go for Round 2 for regular admissions deadlines. She will, though, after a break.

Seems to me that if one can get through the paperwork and the scheduling required to get this stuff done, one definitely deserves to go to a fine college.

Good luck to all!

D is almost done with her apps and has several admits(rolling - God Bless them):
Colorado State - accepted
Miami University - won't be notified until February
Montana State - accepted
No. Michigan U - accepted
University of Georgia - waiting to hear
University of Minnesota - needs to finish app
University of No. Colorado - accepted
University of Utah - just decided to apply, should be accepted given her admit index

To say I am relieved is an understatement. She will be going somewhere and all her options so far are great. Now it is on to scholarship applications....

Good luck everyone!

S has applied ED to Columbia. I think he has the credentials to be admitted, but on the other hand so do the 90% of applicants who don't get in. Also has apps filed RD for NYU and Brown and still working on Tufts, Penn, GWU and Connecticut College. It's slow going on all of those. Three years ago my older S went though all of this, but somehow the process seems more complex and paper-laden this time around. Maybe it's just me.

This is our first time through college admissions, and I can't tell you how much CC has helped me figure out this process! I want to thank each of you for your wisdom, from the biggest questions about WHERE to apply, to the smallest details about double-spacing and so on.

My D sent her EA to Yale 10 days ago. Whew! She has a list of RD's : some other Ivies, and her favorite safety, Willamette in Oregon. The supplements are ready to launch, if needed, but she's crossing her fingers and toes. Her Yale interviewer contacted her yesterday, so she'll be finished soon!

Best of luck to all. Wish we could all stand around together with a glass of wine sometime in April....

DS1 is sending out three EAs, one of them is a top choice. Two state schools are next, then another top choice is mid-December. He has three more on the RD list -- we'll see how he feels about many he sends once he gets a read on his EAs. However, DS, DH and I are all inclined to just have him apply to everything on his list and sort out things in April after the dust clears.

Due to some happy circumstances, DS is VERY busy with other activities besides apps, so we are more than a little frenetic around here.

One thing I didn't expect in this process: how much time this whole mess takes away from DS2.

Good luck to all - these brings back some queasy memories from fall 2004, and raises the prospect of rough days to come in the fall of 2008 - I've got 2 juniors.

Here's to everyone getting into the right school for them!!!

Oregonianmom a big congrats to your S.

D is still working on her appls. She has 3 reaches, 2 matches and 2 safeties. I hope she can submit one of her appls (safety w/ rolling admissions) online this weekend.

Happy Halloween! S will send out his ED app to Dartmouth if he gets home early enough tonight. Beyond that, he'll apply to our State U (which he really likes a lot, so its a good safety) because there's an early deadline for scholarship consideration. Then he'll wait for the ED news. I know, this is a bad idea.... eggs in one very fragile basket, etc..., but he's a stubborn kid and is willing to spend Christmas break working on the schools that round out his list.

Like riverrunner, this is my first time through this, and I'm really grateful to CC! It helps so much to be able to obsess about all this "privately" because I can then try to be all cool and relaxed when talking to S about his process :)

Talking to some coaches about a sport, had decided on an ED school, but may not do it due to disinterest from the coach at that school. Did not send the form in yet, thank goodness.

He has lots of supplements to finish. I am having the breakdown. He is calm, as usual. He is so laid back, this kid, that he is killing me. :)

S has two acceptances from rolling admissions schools, one early notification application done and submitted, and three others in progress (two Common App). I would love to see those three done by Thanksgiving! It was great to have the early acceptances--a real confidence booster, especially since one (Missouri Journalism) is tops in his area of interest. His stress seems to come and go, but eased up even more after that EN application went in. His interest in high school is waning, which could become a problem. Today he said, "I don't have any work," when I know he has three projects/papers due December 1st. I remember my endless senior year, too!

My daughter has all her applications done. I knew with this child that the only way we were going to get through this with sanity intact was to get it all done as early as possible. She's on her computer all the time anyway, so thank God for online applications.
So far, she is in at two OOS flagships, one with honors and merit aid, the other with merit aid and, still pending decision, possible guaranteed admission into health sciences grad programs (that will be decided after 12/1).
She will find out about our instate flagship in mid-Dec. That is, on paper, the highest ranking, most competitive school to which she has applied.
But she also has two apps out to private schools for very competitive 6 year accelerated doctor of Physical Therapy programs. Her top choice has about a one in seven admit rate. One of these schools should let her know before Christmas; the other in mid- to late January.

Best of luck to all the '08ers and their families. Wish I could have a cup of tea or glass of wine with every one of you.
