D also belongs to the class of 2009, so I thought it will be nice for me to be part of this thread too.
I always get bashed for sharing her endeavor to be a part of an engineering class at an Ivy school next year but nevertheless that is what she wants. So hoping for the best but advising her to be more open and find some safeties and low matches where she will be happy too. She has promised me that she will look into Penn state, Case Western Reserve, USC, UC’s and other colleges after her APs.
She have been overly stressed lately as she had AP Statistic this Tuesday and today giving her AP US History but the worst Day is Monday as she has 3 APs Biology, Physics C Mechanics and Physics C E&M all on the same day (Who the hell made the program).
She has signed up for her SAT1 on June 7th. She is done with her 3 SAT2’s. She is hoping for an upward of 2260 (PSAT 260) score but keeping her fingers crossed on that as she has not worked for it at all because of her APs but she hope to spend time after her May 14th AP English.

I'm sure your daughter will do fine! My D is also thinking of engineering and has been looking at Case as well. Last year she had AP Chem and AP Psych on the same day and it is very tiring, but I'm sure your D is well prepared. Hope she can relax a little bit this weekend.

Wow, ParentOfIvyHope, I'm not surprised your daughter is stressed. I hope it's all worth it to her and she can attend a dream school.

drb, we may not be far west enough for your D, but we (University of Minnesota, that is) have a brand new, state-of-the-art equine center that may interest your D. See:
Equine Center - University of Minnesota Equine Center

sabaray : She is well prepared for Biology but somehow AP Physics multiple choice questions have been a problem. There were not many questions available and teacher policy is to not provide them also. That is something causing her some anxiety.
Last year she took chem but the teacher was so good and they had all tests in the class as full AP style test up to the chapter they covered so by the time it was May they have done it so many time that there was no need to study for it.
Mechanics was done in the first semester and during this semester it was only E&M. There have not been any cumulative reviews. So ishe is not very comfortable with respect to AP Physics.

cpeltz : We are hoping the same. My wife has decided to take her for an overhaul after June 7th and before her summer endeavor. She is of the opinion that my D at the end of day is a girl and should be fashionable.

D1 is also class of 2009 (D2 follows right behind in class of 10). She is interested in chemistry and history and wants to go to a small LAC in the midwest or possibly northwest (I should point out that she has lived her entire life in southern California and believes seventy degrees is sweater weather). Most of the kids at her school want to go to Ivys and East Coast LACs and other prestigious universities.

She is also incredibly stressed this month with APs, final projects in most classes, and two dance competitions.

S2 is also class of 2009. He lists math or computer science as his potential college major in his interest survey. Other than that, his response to all things related to college (e.g. urban/suburban/rural, big/medium/small, east-coast/Midwest/west-coast, etc.) is:
a) I don’t know
b) Whatever
c) Some inaudible words

I’ll be looking for a lot of advice and support from CC members in the coming months…

LOL DreamMom -- our S's could be interchangeable! Is it close to impossible to get him out of bed in the morning, too?

D is looking at small LACs, and we are working our way "north" in our thinking. We're from NC. Looking at Furman, Elon, Wake Forest, and Chapel Hill, simply b/c we're in state, but also looking at schools in VA (Richmond) and PA (Gettysburg, Dickinson). Would love any insights! She seems to add new ones to the fold every week. Has mentioned D.C. as well.

DreamMom - my son is also looking at CS. I've researched some colleges for him, made a list, given him stupid reasons to choose each college (name of mascot for one college, another college serves chocolate chip pancakes, cool student YouTube video for another, etc) which we'll be touring this summer. So far, so good.

Hi, everyone. I thought I'd join the group. My younger son is also in the Class of 2009. I can't believe it's time to go through this process again. I sure had a learning curve with my older son who just finished up a very successful freshman year at Rice. Despite the increased knowledge (on my part), of course, my younger son's search is completely different than my older son's. S1 knew EXACTLY what he wanted to study -- electrical engineering and CS and he knew he wanted a medium size research university. S2 literally has no idea, even though we had dragged him along to a bunch of colleges during S1's search.

S2 loves photography, but won't major in it. He might like to study business or anthropology, but really has no idea. We started out looking at small schools and he's kind of leaning now towards schools that are a little larger to offer more choice in course selection. We went on an east coast tour over Spring Break and we're planning a New England tour in June and a California tour in August. Hopefully that will nail it down a little.

S2 has finished taking SATs (YAAYYY!) and just took one SAT II. He'll take 2 more in June and the ACT in June as well. I can't wait for the testing to be done with. What an enormous stressful process that is.

This will be an interesting journey.

Just wanted to give a shout out to the parents of kids who took APUSH on fri. How did your kids feel? I was stressing because the teacher has a notoriously low passing rate. Like you could count them on both hands and he has been teaching the class for 7 or more years. Anyway, my girls both report feeling great about the multi choice and fairly confident about the essays. TwinE says she is sure she got "at least a 4" cocky little thing isn't she ;) Anyway I am glad that one is over! Bio on Monday and Comp on Fri then it is smooth sailing into June for my girls!

Another mom with a DS in class of 2009. I've been on CC a little over a year. My son's approach to college has been interesting...

It started toward the end of freshman year, when he said, "Ugh. High school is so boring I can barely stand it."
I said, "So what are you going to do about it?"
He moaned and said, "I just want to go to college, why can't I just go to college?"
And I said, "Fine with me."

Next thing I know, he's on the phone with admissions offices, asking if they accept students without a high school degree. Then he's researching colleges on the internet. So he applied sophomore year. Man, I would have been crying empty-nest tears if he had gotten in, but he didn't.

He learned some great things, though, by reading college web sites and looking at their "What to do in high school to prepare for our college" advice. He learned that there are some wonderful summer programs for high schoolers before junior year and senior year, and and he auditioned/applied for those. He learned he really needs to get A's (even if the class is boring) to get into the kind of school he would like. And he got done with his standardized testing early (yay!).

All in all, the dry run was an extremely productive exercise.

geomom: Sounds like your son learned some really imp. stuff throoughout the course of his "exercise" I especialy like the bit about learning that it's important to work hard even in the "borng" classes. Sounds like a self starter and an interesting kid.

CBBBlinker - My S does everything in the last minute (or the last second, if he can get away with it). On a school day, he has to get up by a certain time in order to get to school right when the bell rings. Awake or not, he will not get out of bed even 5 minutes earlier than necessary. Naturally, he doesnt eat breakfast . sign

Fireflyscout - I have a hard time coming up with a preliminary list for S. The math major I can understand because he is very accelerated in math study. The CS major is a surprise because he doesnt do much with the computer other than gaming! S tried to sign up for AP Computer Science but his HS did not offer this class in the last 2 years. Not sure if HS will offer this class next year. Anyway, I think S is actually undecided in the math and science area and almost all colleges offer math and science majors! I want to find schools with a good fit for him but that is impossible to do without any input from him!

By the way, I enjoyed reading the book Accept My Kid Please. It is a fun book about college search and tour!

Historymom My S took APUSH yesterday too. I got the usual I dont know when I asked him what he thought about the test. :) He took World History last year and plans to take Euro History next year as an elective. A history kid in the making!

Historymom: MY D said she did best on the DBQ, followed by essays and then Multiple choice. Throughout the year multiple choice was the reason for her B+ otherwise she had a A in essays. She thinks she did around 20 wrong on MC and says if she get less than 20 wrong she will have a 5 otherwise 4.

U of MD?

Interesting to hear from the parents of students at/looking at U of MD. They have a good comp sci program (son's interest). I was looking at their website -- the tuition section. When I added up all the items, it looked like -- for out-of-staters--it was around $31k a year. I found this hard to believe, since I've heard such great things about UofMD, and other schools we've looked at (that seem as if they might be similar) are in the $45-$47k range.

Just wondered if I had this right? And, if anyone knew--are they known to be generous w/fin aid? Would be great news, if so, but don't want to get to enthusiastic if I've missed something, math-wise! Thanks.

Son loved the Comp Sci AB test, thought US History was easy (spent more time describing to me how he "decorated" his booklet after finishing the test than telling me anything relevant about the test), but is not looking forward to English Language this week. Timed writing is not his strength.

Went out to dinner last night and saw several prom groups. Mostly groups of one or two guys with a bunch of girls. I'm trying to convince son to attend next year and that he would have a relatively easy time finding a date. Someone needs to develop a video game about how to ask a girl out.

fireflyscout--son said the same thing about US History. Also thinking Eng won't be as easy, though, w/all the writing.

So true re: the prom thing! I hope this link works (it changes daily--this is for the 11th):
