Jolynne -- LOL! I've posted re: Zits a few times. So many describe my S so well that I'm convinced there's a spy camera somewhere in my house -- you know, relaying scenes from S's life to the writers. This exact scenario about Prom will be going on here a year from now, I'm sure. (S's school only has a Senior Prom, so fortunately it's only a one time event.)

Historymom,

My son has an incredible APUSH teacher. The guy has been around since Thomas Jefferson -- gave him the pen to use to write the Declaration of Independence!

Anyway, my son came out -- at first -- not too confident. Then, he chatted with his APUSH teacher about a few things -- nothing specific because they are not permitted to disclose anything. He thinks he nailed 70 of the 80 MC and he finished the essays an hour early. Most of his classmates also were really pleased. This teacher seems to produce lots of 4s and 5s. He's a great guy -- lots of work, but a great teacher.

For those of you who have younger students who have not taken APUSH or Euro, join historysage.com. It is a wonderful resource. We've used it two years now. I even recommend it to other students.

We still have AP Chem and AP English Language to go. Should be a long week.

252525: We've been to Richmond twice and Wake Forest. Great schools. Richmond has lots of merit money -- 50 full rides for tuition each year. These two schools are on my son's list.

Yes, Jolynne Smyth, you definitely have the out of state tuition about right for U of MD.

Don't know about fin aid though! Sorry! If you find their Common Data Set, which might be linked on the College Search forum, it should detail it.

U of MD is probably in our top 3 choices right now - we are in state though, and it is running about 19k for us, tuition, R & B.

momreads: Any website abut AP English Language. D is signed up for it but haven't done anything about it as struggling hard with Biology and Physics C for tomorrow.

For AP Chem ask Son to practice the equations as those were easy and sure thing on the test.

Parent of Ivy Hope,

My son appreciates the AP Chem suggestion. Did a practice test again today. Is in the 5 range, so he's happy. The class is all but self-taught. He took it online, and his teacher was fired about six weeks ago. So, he's been working with another teacher online, but ...

Fortunately, our chem teacher in his school is good, so he's getting some good advice from him.

As for AP Bio, my son suggested using some of the information on SparkNotes. He did a year ago.

As for AP English Language, if you PM me and give me a fax number, I can go see his English teacher in the morning and get some of the information she has been giving the kids in his class.

Meanwhile, here are some of the websites...

Good luck to your daughter ... and of course, you!

Hi, All!

I have an '09er, too. DD will be our second through the application process. I think birth was easier ... sigh. ;) Right now, she's looking at engineering-medicine-pharmacy-math-? We just know for sure it'll involve math and science. She's her daddy's d -- engineering like all the way -- but she's always balked at the idea. Lately, she's been coming around and going ... hmmm... "maybe that is me." This from the kid who just went to her GC to switch out of AP psych next year to AP physics to add with the AP calc because she thinks it'll be easier. (She's dreading AP Lit, but she'll soldier on) We'll probably end up staying in state, but who knows ... we're looking at GaTech and Mit out of state, too.

zebes, already with a headache, and it's only may?

Son has lost his mind, er, I mean, he's taking 6, count 'em, SIX APs next year, on top of the 4 he took this year. This is NOT your stereotypical, driven, high-achieving kid. This is a bright, quirky, disorganized kid. I was NOT encouraging this many AP's. He took Computers AB, Calc AB, English and US History this year.

Next up: Physics C, Psych, Lit, Economics (micro or macro - not sure which), U.S. Gov't, and Calc BC.

I hope we both survive.

mom2three, my daughter's already taken the Psych and Gov't APs- she felt they were by far the easiest of the AP exams she's taken to date (Chem, Euro, Calc AB, Gov't, Psych)- this week she has Bio and AP Language. Next year I think she's signed up for 5- US History, English Lit, Stats, Enviro and French Language. In any event, Psych and Gov't didn't add much to her workload and weren't difficult to prepare for so I think your son should be in good shape.

I posted earlier as a parent of an '09, D2. Looks like we are finished with the process! She recently accepted a DI athletic scholarship. Looks like she will be within 4 hrs of home!!! Hooray!

Congratulations, NorthMinnesota's daughter!! Which sport?

Mom2three: D's similar to your S. She has 4 AP's right not, and she'll have 5 senior year. (physics, calc bc, lit, economics, gov). I, too, tried to get her to tone it down and enjoy. When you already have most of your grad requirements, there really isn't much of anything else she could take. (P.E. no way! vocational ... nope, sick of fine arts ... physics and calc sounds fun)

zebes, wondering how such a left-brained daughter came out of my right-brained writer's body. Together ... we make a whole person. ;)

LOL firefly re asking a girl out to prom. Wouldn't it be great if there were a video game for all those little things? I can see it. You would get bonus points for certain methods. ie My D told me that she read that someone on CC asked a girl out by challenging her to a game of hangman. The correct answer spelled out "Will You Go To Prom With Me" on the other hand you would loose big time for passing notes ala 5th grade or having your friend do it for you. Another big point getter, chatting with the girls' mom and dad and bringing her home in a timely fashion. Unwanted advances...Game Over!

NorthMinn: Congratulations! That is fantastic! D1 scholarship and close to home??? You must have done something really good :) What will you do with all of your time now that this whole college search has been wrapped up?

Mom 2 three. I wish your son and you the best of luck next year. My DDs are looking forward to an easier Sr. year. Due to limited offerings. They will both have room to work as classroom aids next year.

Dream Mom your S sounds like a kid after my own heart!

Mom 2 three,

Did your son call mine?

Mine is taking five APs as a senior, after four as a junior and three as a sophomore. We all will, somehow, survive this. The kicker is that he has three open blocks the first semester and two the second. Only 2 of the APs are in our building. The rest are online. But he wants to do this. No one told him to do it.

NorthMinnesota - wow! Congratulations on having a hopefully relaxed senior year!

historymom - love the hangman idea, but CS son will probably want to do something in pixels.

Son is looking at 6 APs next year. Fortunately he's not the type to get stressed (unless girls are involved).

Thanks all! It was a tough choice. She would have preferred waiting but they want you to committ so early!!! I really think she could have gone to some great LACs with her stats but her limit was within 4 hrs from home and she loved the school as soon as she was on campus. I am a small LAC grad and DH a DI state school so guess who won!!! I'll push for the grad school.;)

My S is also in the high school class of 2009. He's interested in music/jazz guitar and sound recording and production. We're looking at schools close to home in NY. He did great on the ACT - 33 composite and will take 3 APs next year. None this year, just honors classes. We've already visited 4 schools and he really likes SUNY Purchase. This is a fun process for me, but he's already feeling a little stressed! Fortunately, prom, NYSSMA and the SATs are all over! We're definitely looking forward to summer and visiting a few more schools.

Fender - so I assume your name has to do with a Jazzmaster rather than a car (lol). If you are close to NYC the Essentially Ellington fest is this weekend, what the bands do there is simply amazing! (D's jazz band competed last year) If your son is considering Eastman at all you should come here to Rochester next month during the Jazz Fest....best of luck to him as he searches colleges.

My son played guitar and sang a song to the girl he asked to prom:).

As the name suggests I've a D who belongs to high school class of 2009. She is busy with APs at this point and was quite stressed last few weeks. She was asked to prom by a senior but declined as she was not sure if she wanted to go to prom because of the APs. I'm hoping someone will ask her out again as I don't want her to go to prom alone. She is A-/B+ girl but has taken a very hard course load (10 APs by junior year). She is dreaming big MIT/Stanford/Caltech for engineering. Anyone knows how to calculate unweighted GPA if school doesn't provide one and uses +/-.

ArpMom - I think the school has to provide their weighting process as part of their profile so that schools can use that to unweight/reweight, someone correct me if I am wrong....

As far as your D going to prom alone, don't worry about it - mine is going alone as well, and as long as she is with a bunch of friends she will have a good time...

Thanks Rachacha: Question was whether to strip off +/- and consider A(4),B(3), C(2), D(1) or use A+(4.3), A(4), A-(3.7) etc but in the second case the GPA is not out of 4 which an unweighted GPA is suppose to be.

As far as going to prom alone I would prefer that she gets asked out than going alone. I was the popular one at school but she is the nerd one. I'm going to transform her after APs. She has been a Dad's girl till now but next year she is going to be Mom's girl. So there will be a change in course lineup too.
