Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

KLucky-my D leaves at the end of the month for a two week trip w/ her spanish class to Costa Rica. I am used to her being away all summer, but that is only a 3 hour drive away from me. I think her being out of the country will be stressful for me too!

Got the bill from the school for the AP exams in May…4 x $86
Going to send a check to school this week.

Registering for the ACT, SAT, SAT2s seemed less painful as its done online with the click of the AmEx card…

Then again, after apps fees…the real challeneg begins with the deposit next spring (;)

Back in January I signed my S for March SAT, because March looked like an uneventful month. Boy, did it change! He has no time for any prep, and I am freaking out a little. This is his first ‘official’ SAT. Judging by his PSAT score, he has potential to score well, unless poor boy falls asleep in the middle of the test. I am seriously considering not sending him to school on Friday, before the test, so he will get some rest. I really hope he does well on his first try, so he doesn’t have to take it again.

Meanwhile, I am trying to finalize the college trip for the spring break, and wishing our school had the 11 colleges in 6 days trip. We are doing 7 colleges in 6 days, and it’s a lot of planning!

And the worst part – April and May are looking even crazier! No chocolate lasts over 3 hrs in my house!

From fall to spring, HS is like a snowball, it just keeps building up bigger and bigger. It does help when they get to college as they push the restart button each new term.

On Monday D2 turned in her final application, including 4 essays, for a summer internship. Today she turned 17! Keeping fingers crossed that she gets some internship interviews this month and then an offer in April. Otherwise she’s going to be pounding the pavement looking for a summer job.

Time for me to get off CC and get my taxes and FA done before 3 weeks of spring break trips. Best to all with kids sitting the SAT this weekend!

NEXT weekend, entomom! My son also needs an extra couple of weeks for studying. He signed up for a study prep but due to snowstorms, half of them have been canceled. I’m concerned that if he doesn’t do well, his confidence will be shot and he won’t want to do it again.

Long time cc lurker. First time poster. First of all, while reading the posts here, i decided to ordermassive amounts of the good chocolate that the school is selling for fund raising. At least that way, won’t feel too guilty.
I have to admit S is pretty on top of things so far. Done with SAT, and two SAT2 and almost done with bunch of essays for summer programs and internships. His ECs have been relentless so far and with everything else going, the poor kid is streached to the limit. Taking 7 APs in May!!! My problem is that i feel that he is overcommiting himself but he assures me that a “little” stress is good. Says it keeps him on his toes. Planning to visit 3 colleges this spring. 2 in Chicago and 1 in Pittsburgh. Any suggessions on where to stay during CMU visit.

fogfog, I wrote the $344 AP check last week. I wonder how much my parents paid for my AP tests back in the day.

We are starting to clean for Passover, and I discovered some hidden chocolate.

LOL, do you have a suspect?

I think hidden chocolate follows the same rule as money found in the laundry (finders keepers.)

The chocolate was in the pantry, but it was in an opaque container in a back corner. Shhh, don’t tell anyone. :)

randrmom, welcome, and OMG 7 APs? Having the internship essays done is wonderful. D1 applied to two longshot summer programs, but says that she might use some of those summer program essays for applications next fall.

SlitheyTove, that a great idea. The questions don’t change that much and having an outline on similar topics prepared beforehand may help a lot.

welcome randrmom. I agree…OMG 7 APs. Wow, you have some motivated son there. Looks like 3 of us have children interested in CMU now.

We paid for AP tests back in Dec. Only two in S’s case, Eng Lit and Euro Hist.

Just signed S up for the May SAT. He has been doing prep all along but we are going to make the big push to practice every day from now til then.

My D wants to take 5 AP’s next year (Chem, Calc, English, Spanish and Econ). I am trying to get her to drop one of them( probably Econ). I think 5 will be too many too handle on top of her EC’s and college app’s. I admire her for wanting to challenge herself, but I really think it is overkill. She has 2 AP’s this year (physics and US history) along with honors, math, spanish, english and quite frankly her grades could be better! She also has one AP from 10th grade (Euro History). I think that taking one less AP in senior year will not effect her applications at all.

lol
I have been pilfering the leftover Valentines Day candy out of ds’s goodie bag…
after all–can’t let it go stale (:o)

Congrats to all who have your kids’ summer plans/internships in the works. What sort of things are your kids planning to do?

I went to my favorite bakery this a.m. and couldn’t leave without buying chocolate chip rugalah (sp??). I am a much calmer person at the moment. Even with S2’s summer plans up in the air.

I keep alternating this thread with the Diet/Health/Exercise thread. LOL, different attitudes about food!

Madbeam- my d is working in the office staff of the sleepaway camp she attended for years. This will be her second summer on staff. She lives being there. It is her home away from home!

D applied for a summer position at a camp. She volunteered there all last summer and was told that she would get hired to work there this summer. Let’s hope that’s true! I wish she could hear back soon - if she has to make alternative plans, earlier the better.

She does have another job at a local company that she just started - about 10 hours a week. Guess she could bump up the hours if needed during summer.

She’s taking the SAT next Saturday as well. I get the eye roll if I mention SAT prep. This is her second try and very likely her last, no matter what the scores are! When I got her to sign up for this, March looked like the best bet. No sports, time off in the afternoons, so hopefully time to prep. Well, she found this job and has been spending almost all her afternoons there since winter sports season finished. I almost think she doesn’t want to come home from school!

Oops, NEXT weekend, sorry didn’t mean to cut the prep time short! That reminds me that I have to sign D2 up for her final SAT II in June.

S also applied to work at the camp he attended (and younger sis still attends) for years. Last year he got his app in too late. This year he got it in earlier but he still hasn’t heard back yet. ;-( I love this camp, its close, clean and well run during the summer. But, they are difficult to communicate with off season, even though they all work at the school the camp is located at. I hope he has this relatively easy job, otherwise he may end up doing yard work for a large company that owns thousands of apts. It will be hot, sweaty and dirty work. Maybe that would be good motivation.

Still have to sign S up for at least one SAT 2, probably 3 seeing as you can take 3 in one sitting. He took Chem and USH last year. He will definitely take Math 2.

What about prom? S goes to an all boy school and doesn’t have a date so he isn’t going to prom this year. The Mother in me wants to network and find him a date, but I am resisting with all my might. Anyone elses kid going?

LuckyBoy’s at an all boys’ school too. He has a “sort of” girlfriend—they went to the movies together after being at several parties (friend of a friend deal) and have been texting almost constantly during the evenings. He hasn’t asked her yet. Last year his girlfriend broke up with him right before the sophomore semi-formal, yikes. Prom is at the end of April.

Dh had to run out for some flour (how could we be out of flour??). I asked him to pop into the liquor store for some wine. Ds is now on the plane to Heathrow.

LuckyBoy is only working two weeks this summer, at the “geek camp” (technology camp for middle school students) at the oh-so-nearby Flagship. He attended this camp for four summers, then worked for free the past two summers as he wasn’t yet old enough to be paid.
