Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

My son has a girlfriend and she’s been planning on the prom for a while. They’ve been dating since October of Sophomore year. I’m pretty sure it’s mid-May here. The kids won’t be done until June 18th at the earliest so there will be a good month left of school after that. My older son never did any prom’s but my daughter went to two. Something to look forward to after the AP tests!

Welcome randrmom. My S is on the fence with CMU. We went to GA Tech last weekend. We all loved it. Over Spring Break we’re headed up to Boston (Olin, WPI, MIT) and LA (CalTech & Harvey Mudd). In the Fall we’ll visit Rice & CMU (maybe) on different long weekends.

Over the summer, S will be in summer school for class on Extended Essay (4000 word paper all IB students have to do). Will probably go to Engineering course at Stevens. Rest of the summer - Community service, starting app essays and scholarship essays.

Most important - my chocolate vote is Hershey’s milk chocolate. No dark, no white, no expensive frou frou brand. A good ole Hershey bar. Yum!

FiMathmom - check out Burdicks hot chocolate in Harvard Square.

Our student will be busy
continuing community service
sport related activity-hopefully national level competition
essays

We have a family trip with MiL etc at end of summer and of course there will be summer reading for school in fall. They have tests the first day or so back.

Had been weighing options for internships vs staying the course on what our student has been doing…and don’t know how an internship would provide real concrete benefit since our student hasn’t had engineering coursework to really be of service in any real capacity–

The expensive summer school/camp options aren’t in our budget and will conflict with national level sports competiton/training.

Cannot believe how fast this is coming…

as for chocolate: Perugina Baci is my vote.
Also like those Ritter… choc bars with almonds or hazelnuts…

Hey. DS will be doing machinima this summer with an off off Broadway production (he is also working on it during the year and did this last summer). Last summer he also did an unpaid internship at a lab, which I am nagging him to do again this summer. If he doesn’t he may do a different one or do a college class. Also essays for the application… Family trip to Hawaii at the end. And favorite chocolate here is Leonidas.

Meant to add that we are done with SATs, thank goodness!!! But 4 APs to take in just a few months…

Congrats relaxmom on being done with the SAT part. Thats wonderful.

We won’t know if our student is done with testing until results in late June…

So no one’s child is sitting around playing video games this summer? :-)

S may be taking a multi-variable calculus class at the local community college this summer, along with playing on a travel team that is planning to attend several out of state tournaments. We looked into EPGY summer program – wow that is expensive! Not sure the benefit is worth it, although it sounds like those who have done it thought it was great. The science internships around here all seem to be biology or chemistry-related, and my son wants to study Physics, so he is not applying for them. We did find a one-week physics camp that he might try, but the application deadline’s not till the end of April so of course he hasn’t started it. Why do today what you can procrastinate on and do at the last minute?

I assure you my son will be playing lots of video games!

I expect my D’s will put in lots and lots of facebook time. :)

D1’s plan is to get a job if neither of her longshot summer programs comes through. She also has a couple of volunteer opportunities. I don’t care, as long as we don’t have to pay for her to do something during the summer. Hoping for a family trip at the end of the summer, and then some college visits.

I’ve compiled a 26 page doc of summer programs with web sites, explanations, costs, deadlines. Programs are mainly math, science and engineering. At the end, I put a list of where you can find lists of other info. It is current as of Nov 2009. If you PM me, I will email it to you (Word doc). Many offer fin aid altho I may not have indicated it.

nemom - Thanks for the hot chocolate tip. It better warm up in Boston by the time we get there on the 25th.

fogfog, taking the Jan SAT in jr year was best advice we got from our college counselor! As for your kid, of course waiting for results is hardest par!!1… and there is still time to retake next fall if needed (That is what I kept saying to myself).

For various reasons D opted for the March SAT, coming up quickly. How long does it take to get the results? Would prefer she retake in June if nec. rather than fall but I think we’d have to register before we get March results. Can you tell we’re not as organized as many of you about this?! :)

sigh…Hawaii…we were able to go a couple times quite a while ago, before “real life happened” the past few years :frowning:

D has had a great job for the past couple years and hopefully will get more hours during summer. She also volunteers quite a bit at the local animal shelter. But she and her younger sister definitely get some summer hang out time too, those are the times we’ll remember.

Chocolate…Dark Chocolate…oh, it’s just yummy to even see only the words!

Hi Collegemaw, results appear fast now, check the collegeboard website, they will have countdown to when results became available. Love, love, love Hawaii.

My son is also taking March SAT (and I also can’t believe how quickly it’s coming up - a little worred that son has not done much prep for it). College Board site says results will be available April 1. Registration deadline for June sitting is May 5, so plenty of time.

D not happy with January results. Retaking in June. Taking the school’s review course and hoping scores go up 50 points at least!

^Sorry to hear that, which section? D2 sat for the first time in Oct and did fine in 2 sections but the CR was below her target, and IMO is the most important part. She prepped over Thanksgiving break, retook in Dec and realized a 70 pt increase in CR, so it is possible. Best of luck to your D!

It can definitely be done. A couple of years ago, my son took the December SAT, wasn’t pleased. Took the March and increased CR by 50 points and math by 70.

Entomom- not counting the writing- which she did horribly on, the Cr was 30 points lower than eqivalent PSAT. Scores not horrible, but to get merit aid #'s where we need them to be, 50 points will make a difference.

D has not prepped as I had hoped/recommended…she is a great kid but we are definitely having some teen daughter/mom “fun” :0 at timewe’ll see how she does. She knows she WILL study more if March scores aren’t what we need.

Thanks to everyone for info about collegeboard/results, glad to know we can find out if need to retake before signing up.
