Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

^^ Ha ha…yes many many pages ago some of us committed to dieting for those grad pictures…

fwiw, here’s a link re the science of the supermoon
['Supermoon' Rises: Biggest Full Moon in 18 Years Occurs Saturday Night - Yahoo! News](http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20110318/sc_space/supermoonrisesbiggestfullmoonin18yearsoccurssaturdaynight)

If I don’t stop all the baking & cooking I will never fit into the one dress I own that I wanted to wear to graduation. I don’t think I’ve fit into it after the one time I wore it 7 years ago. Lucky Lilly P never goes out of style. It’s looking like pants and a blazer which is what I have worn to my older S & D’s graduations, ugh. The gym isn’t helping if I am doing all this cooking. H is in heaven, he has never had food like this (in this house)!

Went with DS to get his graduation suit tailored yesterday and picked up new dress shoes. He looks so good even with the spring break beard he is growing.

I think I am pretty sure what decisions will come next week and they won’t impact his decisions one way or the other. Not quite ready to book airline tickets for orientation however.

Good luck everyone.

Fogfog, I read this as Supermom weekend.

I guess Supermoom weekend is a combination of Supermom and Supermoon! Appropriate for many of the posters in this thread. Supermoms who are “over the moon” about our kids.

A beautiful night for a ball! (I am ignoring the forecast for rain.) Thanks for all the well wishes.

OWM – Enjoy your evening, Cinderella!

Our spring break is nearly over. She’s making excellent progress on healing…stitches came out yesterday and they’ve adjusted her sling so that it is just a sling, not a contraption invented by the Marquis de Sade’s favorite apprentice. She can have it off for two hours a day, no more, which makes going back to school easier. She won’t have to beg anyone to help her get dressed.

We’ll have a beautiful evening for SuperMoon. The spring flowers are blooming but no hay fever yet.

Re: Spa Days. I’m taking a short cruise (4 days) next month. It’s not very expensive and I need it!

We are down to two choices…or maybe she’s made up her mind and is just humoring me with the discussion. Wouldn’t be the first time. I do tend to toss things over a little too much.

Just stopping by for a moment before hitting the ground running on a busy weekend. Couldn’t resist the big congrats for the U of C acceptances - what a great school and what a great accomplishment!
Sorry about the thefts - it’s happened to me more than once and it is SO frustrating.
OWM - Thinking of you and your son waltzing this evening is making me smile. And to have your mom there to - so special!
Idinct - I am with you on Ina Garten. My cooking inspiration! I have all her books (except the Paris one). Sometimes there’s nothing like puttering around in the kitchen to perk you up (at least that works for me). Of course, there are some consequences for getting carried away…
And congrats for those getting merit money decisions. That makes life so much easier! And it’s such a great tangible reward for kids’ hard work.
Good luck to all in the days ahead. We’re waiting on two more schools before scheduling accepted student day trips. Exciting (and stressful) times!

Been away on spring break - catching up on this thread has been a challenge! Congratulations for all the good news, and hugs for those who have had disappointments. And it’s always eye-opening to see how both the good and bad (car wrecks! wallets stolen!) and funny (money-eating dogs?) goes on in the midst of college stuff. I thought this was the only thing going on. :)

We still have NO news to report (apart from flagship honors acceptance from last October). Still waiting on ALL of the other decisions - and there are a lot of them. I’m jealous of many of you who are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and D is really getting anxious as all of her friends are learning more (lots of it good news, thankfully). It should be the end of the week before we hear anything, but we’ll hang in there.

2education, so sorry about your S1 with mono! My D, who is a college sophomore, came down with it the month after she went back to school this year. It really threw her for a loop, with all the classes she had to miss in order to rest. Took her a long time to get over it, but at least there weren’t any complications, and now she knows the infirmary staff very well. The bad thing was that now she catches colds and viruses much more easily–guess her immune system is still trying to catch up. The whole episode was nerve-wracking, since we live on the opposite coast and couldn’t pop in to check on her!

I hope your son recovers quickly! Must be comforting to know there’s a teaching hospital at his school.

Scoutsmom and 325: Congrats on the Chicago acceptances. It sounds like a really special school.

Fog: Thanks for the reminder about the supermoon. I’m looking forward to moon watching tonight.

2Education: I can’t imagine doing this 2 years in a row. I’m so sorry to hear about your son’s mono. It’s such a tough illness for a student to deal with. My daughter was lucky to get it over break, even though she had to miss a trip to Israel. I hope that he recovers quickly and gets his energy back soon.

I’m glad to hear that people are starting to narrow down the choices. I can’t wait to see where all “our” kids end up.

So did anyones kid end up being accepted at MIT? Flmathmom? My son was wait listed. Definitely a blow though I never thought it was the right place for him. Prob didn’t come across sciency enough? Dartmouth likely is great, otherwise I wd be a basket case waiting for the march 30 schools…

Scoutsmom – congrats on your son’s acceptance to chicago. (and 325, congrats again!)

fog: thanks for the heads-up on the supermoon. i wasn’t aware of it – i’ll make my whole family take a look.

congrats to all w/the terrific merit aid. wow.

it’s a glorious day here in ny, and so i’m about to go out for a lovely walk. fog, i haven’t done too well w/ the diet thing either. i’ve got to buckle down for the next 2 months! have been back to the gym though.

angier, congrats on the dartmouth likely and the WashU acceptance. sorry to hear about the MIT waitlist but it sounds like it may be for the best anyway if you don’t think it’s the best fit.

OMG. Even without the onslaught of envelopes big and small this is a busy place. Imagine what it will be like in a couple of weeks.

Here goes…

MM- congrats on the merit, and more merit!

Hollie-congrats on sr. status. What kind of discount are you entitled to?

Idinct - another viewbook? WTH. I have noticed S is starting to get emails from schools asking him to apply and giving him to April 1. Emails cost nothing though, viewbooks cost these schools.

Fog - diet, oh yeah. I do have 9 weeks to go. (wonder where S gets that procrastination from) That and a very tight girdle might do it. I am attending S’s biannual auction fundraiser tonight. I was dreading having to buy something new, we all know I will subsequently lose lots of weight and never get to wear it again. I ended up finding a dressy suit I wore to the last auction 2 years ago in my closet and it fit!! I only needed to invest in a new pair of pantihose.

OWM - Enjoy tonight. Pictures please!

Teresa - good luck getting that FA situation fixed.

Madbean - S2 has a great attitude. I hope those big envelopes pile up while he is busy with school work.

collegemaw - 7 for 7 …NICE!

guitarist - congrats!!

2edu - hope S1 recovers quickly.

MOSB - enjoy that pumpkin bread. Glad SB is feeling better

Novel - glad that D is making progress and healing is progressing.

Scoutson - congrats!

pepper - glad S decided to go to the swim banquet. his last!

puma - good luck with the scholarship.

No college news around here. S’s school auction tonight, dressy affair with great food and drink. But, we will probably come home empty handed, most of the stuff will be out of our price range. Last time we bought a couple of “projects” the history dept wanted. It felt good to be able to donate money for specific stuff that the teachers requested.
S’s Eagle scout ceremony is Sunday. Talk about drama. There are a lot of hard feelings in the troop and I will be so glad to get this done.

doing so-so on the diet…but have been exercising more…so I look a bit firmer! Fortunately my weight tends to be fairly stable (within 5 pounds or so in either direction), usually it is a matter of just increasing exercise. this is when I am thankful for my mother’s genes…because believe me I have been stress eating up a storm!!!

and OWM- I second the request for pictures of the event tonight! So excited for you and your family!

Scoutsmom and 325-congratulations that is an awesome school.

CollegeMaw: 7 for 7 is great-makes it easier to make a decision-which school comes up with the biggest bag o’ money!

My DD is awaiting word from Cal Lutheran to see whether she qualifies for extra merit aid. And is waiting for word from Scripps, UC Berkeley, and Notre Dame. At the end of this week everything will be a lot more clear for everyone no doubt.

Think I will celebrate by whomping up a big batch of Chicken Adobo (although sometimes there is nothing as pathetic as a white guy trying to do Asian cooking).

have fun one and all!!!

Yippee for 325 and Scoutson! I hope your joy is carrying through the weekend.

I have been exercising consistently and harder than usual, at least 6 days a week, usually 7… and have still gained a few pounds. Such is life over 50, I guess. Very depressing.

Today’s D2’s 18th birthday, and we will barely see her. Her whole class had a gathering last night, and she spent the night at a friend’s and went straight to all-day rehearsal from there. (The final play of her high school career is approaching.) Tonight is a concert with friends, and we’re sending her and her friends out to dinner after. We haven’t seen her since she was 17, and won’t see the 18-year-old until midnight tonight… good preparation for losing her next year, I guess.

She is SO stressed with the college choice. She knows it’s a happy situation, to be 4 for 4 with colleges, with merit aid at all. But she really likes 3 of the 4, and is just overwhelmed by making the choice. All are 3,000 miles away, so she can’t casually go visiting a few times. When we were talking about it the other night, she suddenly turned pale as a ghost, and her old stomach troubles flared up big-time… made me glad she didn’t push herself for the top-tier LACs that everyone told her to apply to. The stress would have been too much.

But it is a happy situation, and I am grateful to CC for helping me help her find such great fits.

I’m a planner, and it sooo goes against my nature to not be able to plan ahead for our April college visit trip, since we don’t yet know where D will be accepted. I have several likely scenarios planned out, but it’s all subject to change. A couple of her schools are rather isolated and not near major airports. All are far away (1500-3000 miles) and require an airplane trip. We visited some of them last fall, and we will probably not revisit those, but as for the others… we need to visit if she’s accepted. I booked some changeable flights, and now all I can do is wait.

I hear you, O-Mom. I’m trying to figure out April, and in addition to not knowing where the acceptances will be (except a long ways away - we know that!), also have competitive play schedule to take into account (don’t know how far they’ll advance) and H’s work schedule (constantly changing). The Type A in me is not happy!

My word! I’m gone a couple of days due to a nearly dead computer hard drive (or at least it’s pretending to be) and I peek back in and there is so much going on. Acceptances, merit aid, waltzes, and more! Congrats to all.

A few pages back, I mentioned the bizarre random pre-official acceptance calls that one of my kid’s prospective schools was doing all week. We think last night she may have received one. Someone from the school called but since she wasn’t home, they said they’d call back another time. (And wouldn’t you know, she came home literally two minutes later!) Sooooooooooo we don’t know anything. Perhaps, she forgot to send something in and that is why they called. I still think this calling before the admission decisions are released is much too stressful of an idea.

Other than that, it is a mellow weekend in our house. March madness college basketball is a much welcomed diversion from all that needs to be done!

♫♪ Happy 18th Birthday to Reseaching4emb Wonderful Daughter ♪♫

Momdoc & Momjr & Mamom ~Thanks for your good thoughts for S1
I have not heard from him today and do not want to call in fear of waking him up :(

Aniger ~Sorry about the waitlist.
So tough for those kids.

Research~hope your D enjoys her day and is able to leave her stress behind.

Renaiss~I just got back from a wonderful walk with DH.
It is chilly but the snowdrops and crocuses are out. Spring is coming ;)

Orego & OGM~Good luck with the planning of revisits in April.

Diet someone said diet…Listen y’all this is my second year so I am allowing myself a pass on the diet… Looking good at graduation is overrated :D

2education- unfortunately as school bd vp I have to hand out the diplomas (can’t wait to hand d and her friends theirs!!), so I have to look at least presentable in the pictures!!!
