Happy Saturday **

♪♫Happy 18th Birthday to Arisamp’s Wonderful Daughter♪♫

Congrats on all the good news that has occurred “while I was sleeping”. Collage1 - what a wonderful day for your daughter. Bkcs - YAY for BU!!! Fishymom and I need some company for our daughters.

I’m so glad that the good news outwieghs the bad, but for those whose kids are dealing with disapointments, this too shall pass. There isn’t just one perfect place for each kid. Encourage them to embrace the choices they have, and bloom where they are planted.

Congrats to Seattle_Mom’s D, collage1’s D, ohiomom’s S, lynjoy’s S, bkcsmn99’s D, and a very happy birthday to arisamp’s D today!

My D was rejected from Middlebury early this morning. It wasn’t her first choice - in fact, she purposely didn’t fall in love with any one school on her list after the stinging Swarthmore ED rejection. She’s taking it in stride and is happy for the acceptances she has. I knew these last couple of weeks in March might be tough with all of the reachy schools she applied to. But so far it’s been OK and she’s actually taking it really well.

I’m impressed with all of your kids. We’ve got some amazing students here, and really wonderful parents. Kudos to all of you!

momofzach - sorry to read about UVA. GLad your son seems to be taking it well and has moved on.

Seattlemom- congrats to your D on Whitman. Even if it takes her to May 1st to decide, she will end up in a good place.

OMom - sorry about your D’s rejection to Middlebury. I think your kids are maturing and learning there are plenty of other good schools out there.

Happy Birthday to Arisamps D!!!

bkcsm99- woohoo, congrats on the BU acceptance.

lynjoy - wow, so many great, great choices!!!

scoutsmom- fingers crossed your son wins that science competition.

Ohiomom- Wake Forest - NICE!! Youc an always for a revisit on another day. I actually think your S might be better going for an overnight on a regular school day.

how wonderful is that!! Congrats to your D.

I like being in mountain time zone: by the time I get up there’s already a fresh batch of news to read. And I like scoutsmom’s idea of an official news recap. I’m picturing Ira Glass (from This American Life) – in his voice even the rejections would sound like fodder for an interesting story. [And good luck on that science medal – may it be waved in the general direction of Boston!]

Nice to see several grats already in order this morning: to seattle_mom’s daugther on Whitman, to collage1’s daughter on USC and Bucknell, to bkc on BU, to ohiomom’s son on Wake Forest, to lynjoy’s son on having lots of choices already.

Oregonianmom, sorry about Middlebury, but it’s great to hear that your daughter isn’t letting it get her down – way to stay strong!

UT, yes, daugther’s bf is swinging for the fences. Drives me a little crazy. Our local flagship is known for his major: the grad school is tied for first place with MIT in USNWR and they have three Nobel laureates on the faculty. Unfortunately our school GC is completely incompetent and his mother is going through a really bad divorce and trying to find a job. If Mudd doesn’t come through, I’ll be the annoying gf’s mom and send him more emails about how good the local flagship is!

S2 is in at Davidson! That one brought a smile. Even if it turns out that they’re not affordable, the acceptances are a big morale boost.

PSUProspect (those many pages back)- D’s first choice is UAlbany. While not the “best” of the SUNY’s it does have decent research going on there. It is filled with many, many downstate (NY) kids. There is a wide selection of classes, although at the lower levels you get the large lecture halls filled with interested students in the front and others texting and sleeping in the back. Known as a party school but even if you student is not a partier, there is a niche for all- the student just has to be motivated to find it. One of my friends that went there said it was easier for her because she was older and fully formed already. For the 18 year old first years, there will have to be motivation and self direction to explore and find their way. Some advisers are good, others are paper pushers with little insight and just putting in their time for a state job. Best advice is check out the dept. your student is interested in- that will best determine fit. Good aspect of the place is if the major interest changes, it usually can be accomodated without changing schools. Accepted student days are Apr 2nd or 3rd and I would suggest going if at all possible. Good luck!
(And aren’t I proud of myself for being so even-handed. )

We are still waiting on Oneonta (which STILL has not responded- D is just being stubborn as she has no intent to go there) and Hampshire. Most likely we will be paying our $ to UAlbany the afternoon of Apr 3rd so (we hope) the angst is over. Fingers crossed for us and all of you still waiting.

Very Happy morning in our household, S was accepted to Middlebury & Davidson.

Midd’s FA was FAR better than I had hoped so that is an affordable option, better than our state flagship.

Ohiomom - we may have to meet in Davidson :)

Hugs to all your kids.

Ohiomom: I’m so happy to hear about your son’s acceptances to two great schools after how low he was feeling a few days ago.

O-MOM: Congrats on the scholarships. I’m glad that your daughter is handling the negative news so well. As much as that ED rejection hurt, it’s interesting to see how it has helped her mature.

Lynjoy: Congrats on the great track record so far.

Mamom: Sorry to hear about the rejection, but I’m glad that your son is excited about the
school with the great merit offer.

Seattlemom: Congrats on the Whitman acceptance. I hear you the tough decision maker. My D1 is the same way. She’s a college junior, and now she’s all stressed with summer internship decisions. Good luck with the process.

My daughter just got an email about accepted students days at BU. She doesn’t really need to go, but I guess we’ll do it if we can get cheap airfare. As nice as it has been to have the decision set early, she’s missed out on a lot of the excitement this year. We have three airlines flying from BWI to Boston, so the fares are usually pretty low.

**Saturday’s Countdown for the “reachy” schools is:

Hopefully this is the LAST Saturday for the acceptance decision countdown.

Vanderbilt - THREE DAYS AGO (Wednesday) was decision mailing day! (snail mail only - probably YESTERDAY or TODAY or MONDAY to hit your mailbox). KEEP THOSE MAILBOXES PROPPED UP. LOTS OF HEAVY ENVELOPES COMING SOON! The Admissions Blog link is Vanderbilt Class of 2015 Admission Decisions Mailed Today | The Vandy Admissions Blog | Vanderbilt University

Stanford (Updated)- 6 days to go based on the Admissions News posting on the Stanford web site on March 24. Their link is Admission News : Stanford University

Vassar - YESTERDAY was the day. Congrats to all who got good news!

UVA - YESTERDAY was the day. Congrats to all who got good news!

Wesleyan - YESTERDAY was the day. Congrats to all who got good news!

Johns Hopkins - 3 days to go. Announcments are to be released on the 29th. (Based on information provided to me by another poster - thank you.) See their Admissions Blog announcement at Hopkins Insider

Duke - 4 days to go. Decisions will be available online at 6 PM on March 30th per an email message to applicants.

The big “H” and other ivys - 4 days to go based on the 5PM March 30th announcement date and time. The “lottery drawing” is less than a week away!

March 31st schools - 5 days to go. For all the schools that haven’t announced earlier dates!

It appears that all of the remaining decisions will be released next week. Then we can begin the difficult process of evaluating FA packages and scheduling admitted student days visits. April will be a busy month! If your kids have already decided on their final choice you should be very happy!**

Surprisingly, no Vandy mail - good or bad - arrived today. S is not happy as he wants to know and either plan ahead or strike the school from his list. :(

Based on other posts and other threads, the Vandy envelopes are arriving all over the country without any consistency of delivery. It does seem odd, however, that a first class or priority envelope can’t make it between two mid-major cities in the eastern US in a matter of 3 days.

If any of you have received Vandy mail, big or small, could you please post the day received and the largest nearby city (most likely your postal routing and sorting facility) in your area. I am just trying to figure out if it is us or not.

AvonHSDad - I’m a lurker from the '10 thread supporting all of you - I remember this all so well!! Anyway, we had a '10er who never got an envelope from Vandy and ultimately was accepted but they didn’t know that until following up a week or so later. I don’t think now is the time to ask but if you haven’t heard by early next week when like you said, mail should have arrived, don’t hesitate to call or have GC call to see if they will release the decision over the phone. As it was I think that was what made the '10er not really consider Vandy since he didn’t get that wow moment of acceptance with everything else. I did hear they made a big acceptance show at admitted students day to make up for it to him though.

Good luck to all - know that you have the support of those that have survived before and aren’t quite looking forward to doing this again in a couple years! :)

Back to lurking :)

On another thread someone from Boston has no Vandy mail yet.

Congratulations to everyone on all the awesome overnight and early morning news. And to those with disappointing results, you have my sympathy and my empathy. I love the “bloom where you are planted” sentiment, and I know our kids will do just that. It’s great to read that everyone already has good options for the fall.

D1 got waitlisted at UVA yesterday, and to my relief she literally shrugged her shoulders and moved on to her evening’s activities (she had made reservations for herself and a friend for dinner - yeah, she’s ready to be out and on her own). And she’s focusing on the schools where she’s already been accepted, despite having 6 more decisions still to come.

There does seem to be a definite trend for her, based on the fact that she’s hearing from schools in the order of their selectivity. I think she’s seeing it too, and is almost resigned to it: Accepted to the first 7 with merit aid, waitlisted at the next 2…I think we’re on the way down. But then again, the randomness of all of this, based on what I’m reading here, could mean that there is some good news still to come. We’ll know soon.

Same thing with my D’s results. Safety came first with $. Next a safe match with $, then a match with $, then a slight reach with no money, then 2 waitlists, then a rejection… and yet to come? Glad to hear your D is handling it well, too. By the end of next week, we’ll have all the results and can move forward!

AvonHSDad - No mail from Vanderbilt here as of yesterday, but our mail doesn’t get delivered until about 3 pm central time. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, I’m guessing you’ve read this on their admissions blog, but they say you can call on March 30th if you haven’t heard anything yet. [Advance Info for VU Mailing Day | The Vandy Admissions Blog | Vanderbilt University](Advance Info for VU Mailing Day | The Vandy Admissions Blog | Vanderbilt University)

ckofpng - I completely agree with your assessment. The last 2 schools on the list (UVA and NC State) released online yesterday/this morning and they were both rejections. Fortunately DS didn’t have a school he “ABSOLUTELY HAD TO GO TO OR I’LL JUST DIE” (said loudly and often by a friend of his!) So now I feel like we are heading down the home stretch. He’s been awarded merit $ at 2 of his top 3 choices but we are waiting to get the final financial aid packages. Hopefully they will adhere to the April 1 deadline and we will be finished this phase!

Sounds like your daughter has a great attitude about this.

AvonDad,we’re still waiting for word from Vandy here in CA, too, but mail comes late in the afternoon.

S got accepted to Middlebury! He was awake all night with the stomach flu, so he doesn’t know yet. (Shhh, I peeked, but he truly doesn’t care.) I hope he’ll be happy. Other than Notre Dame, he’s been waitlisted at the big schools he applied to, but the LACs he applied to seem to love him and have been generous with merit and FA. I’m kinda worried since we haven’t received the priority envelope from Vandy yet that he’ll be waitlisted or rejected there, too. Two more LACs and two Ivies to hear from, so don’t know what to expect. He’s got lots of great choices, though, so I’m not complaining. My heart breaks when I read threads written by kids who have been waitlisted practically everywhere. It hasn’t been a very good admissions year for lots of his friends at school, especially since most of them apply to UCs.

Congrats to all the acceptances that are too numerous to list, and condolences to the WLs and rejections. It’s always fun to see you all post acceptances to schools my S got into too and wonder if they’ll wind up at the same place!

Hang in there until Wed, a big day for lots of us!

to AvonHS dad-

We live in NYC and last night around 9, I was walking out the door and my doorman said, “Oh, here, you got this envelope.” It was big and said on the outside, Congradulations. Return address: Vanderbilt. I texted my son who is out of town and he was thrilled. A few minutes ago I had time to look through the package, and unlike most, the FA was included. I almost fainted. it’s almost double what others schools have offered. I’m a single mom and this school is now totally affordable. I am so over the moon excited I can barely write. Lots of luck; maybe you’ll get some great news today.
