Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Impossible for me to keep up so I’m just giving the generic shout outs of yays and boos.

Boychild’s final school mailed out their letters yesterday so should know on Monday. I cannot wait until this is all over!!!

lynjoy - that is great news!

Here’s to great weather across the country so the USPS can be extra speedy the next 5 days :)

Hi all! Good news at our house this morning! D was accepted to Boston College and Middlebury! This hopefully will take the sting away from the other schools she is waiting to hear from next week. D applied to 10 schools and still waiting to hear from 6. Those 6 schools by far will be the toughest. Rollercoaster ride indeed!
Congrats to all that has heard good news and big hugs to those that didn’t!! I agree that it will be nice to when all of the decisions are released and everyone can start planning for the next phase:)

Scoutsmom: “That was the week that was” reminds me of Tom Lehrer, and now I’d like to hear him sing the college recap in a big rush, like his Elements song. Except it would have to be “that was the day that was” at the rate the news is flowing in. How can it be happening so fast, when it seems to be taking forever for each school to release?

lynjoy - Congratulations!!! Love that the FA was better than expected!

Oregonianmom and momofzach, it’s nice to know we’re in such good company.

lynjoy, congratulations!

rom828, you just gave me a thread of hope for Vanderbilt. We did have some ice and snow here yesterday, for which noone was prepared, so maybe that’s why we didn’t get anything…yeah, I’ll cling to that for another 4 hrs. until the mail arrives. ;)

Thanks to everyone who posted updates on their Vandy mail. It is quite possible that all of their priority mail (two truckloads per their blog release) didn’t get processed into the mailstream all on Wednesday evening as I believe each piece has to be scanned for tracking. The first class mail (WL and denials) were standard mail and should have been on their way right away.

So, trying to be logical about this in my own illogical way, it appears that there are still a lot of undelivered large envelopes out there waiting for delivery on Monday. :D

shillyshally and cpofpng - If nothing arrives by the 30th, I will advise S who will be on a class trip in Washington and he can call their admissions office.

I also want to pass along congratulations on all of the good news acceptances, scholarships and FA news. Likewise, condolences to the waitlists, denials and bad FA information. I had started a list of notes but it got overwhelming last night. For those of you waiting on mail today, I hope the wait is worthwhile and the news is positive!

Yes, I really like the way you think, AvonHSDad!

And now it’s time to clean my house. That will surely help the time pass more quickly than hanging out on CC all day :)

@lynjoy -
Re: Vandy FA offer - same here - relatively low income in our household and I knew Vandy meets 100% of financial need but i was a little nervous in that they determine what “need” is. It turned out that D’s package was even better than FAFSA figures. This wonderful school, that is such a great match for her is now more affordable than the two public state safeties she auditioned for and was admitted to. And by a large margin! Plus as a lifelong songwriter/musician, I love Nashville and my BFF from college and H live there. D has loved visiting there since she was little.

We are still waiting on one last school, Manhattan School of Music, next Friday via email. D had her best audition there, so I know she feels fine no matter what happens. I think tho, even if she gets admitted it will not be affordable. FA rep said flatly when I asked during a parent session that they don’t meet 100% of need. But since she plans on grad school for music, an admit from them would still a feather in her cap and good for the future, since their graduate program is excellent for her instrument (trombone). I know that Blair @ Vandy is not as highly regarded as MSM, but I think in D’s case having the full liberal arts experience will be wonderful, and there will be plenty of opportunities for music gigs in Nashville (she got one offer already from my friend’s H during our visit! Bass player canceled for their gig the night we were leaving). I love the fact that the students live on campus all 4 years - my S1 has experienced a nightmare living situation his senior year at Tulane, having 2 roommates leave suddenly with him holding the lease, and most recently getting a rubber check from another who skipped town. I know there are the issues of frats/sororities, etc, but we’ve been living in Texas for 4 years in a semi-rural town and she gets along with all different kinds of people. She loves the idea of minoring in film studies too.

Fingers crossed for all of you still waiting news for your kiddos!

We got a waitlist at Middlebury this morning and nothing in the mail (not Vandy or an expected LAC match). So we’re still waiting for more on Monday or Tuesday, then the lottery picks (seeming more and more unlikely!) on Wednesday.

We’re just extremely happy to have an acceptance at Carleton among the good results - and D seems to be falling more in love with it the more she thinks about it. There still is a sting from the waitlists, but it’s clearly a tough year.

Congrats to all who have received good news, and big hugs for those with not-so-good. It sounds like our resilient kids are landing on their feet, one way or another.

For the Vandy waiters…someone just posted on the Vandy thread that he received an acceptance this morning! So there is hope that your large envelope has just been delayed.

Whatta week! I send hugs to everyone, those with the news that they were hoping for and those who received the kind of news that makes our hearts ache for our babies.

I also send thank yous to all who posted words of inspiration and perspective. As I look back on this whole application/acceptance/rejection process, I see how it has helped my daughter grow and mature. Throughout the process, she has had to dig deep down within herself whether it be to write a very personal essay or to find the strength to dust herself off and move forward after a rejection or road block. All occurring at the same time as she balanced the joys and stresses of life, friendships, school, home, and more. I can see now that she has the maturity to enter the next phase of her life, and though I am so very proud of her for reaching this milestone, I am teary-eyed that my baby girl is a grown woman.

Well, after going 0-2 with private schools, my D received great news from Harvey Mudd and Santa Clara. Truly a blessing from both schools. But, she will need to make her decision quickly as three of her top schools all have their freshman open houses during the same weekend. So one way or another, we will be done with this process in a couple of weeks!

Okay, if I post every four hours maybe I can keep up! (But even that frequency probably won’t be enough come Monday).

Big WOOT’s to
ohiomom’s son and rom’s son for Davidson, rom’s son momdoc’s son, and TessaR’s daughter for Middlbury (popular choice!), lynjoy’s son for Vandy, TessaR’s daughter for Boston College, and itscomplicated’s daughter for Harvey Mudd and Santa Clara.

Boo/hisses to the colleges that rejected or waitlisted cko’s daughter, OneGirlsMom’s daughter, and momofzach’s son. Luckily sounds like they all have lots of options.

Kinderny, my daughter is also waiting on Hampshire (plus six others). No official word from Hampshire, but last year rd kids got mail starting Mar. 29. Three of my daughter’s schools sent mail Thursday or Friday and one sends out Monday. I feel like I’m about to fall into the deep end of the pool!

Thanks for the update snoozn. Hadn’t been able to find out much about Hampshire acceptances in the past and the school website has already moved on the Spring 2012 apps/admittance info. Unlikely D will choose Hampshire, even though we both liked it a lot. She says that her experience at her current alternative education modelled school has made her wary of a second situation that is deemed alternative. If I were in her shoes, Hampshire would have been a likely choice (for me), but taking her wants/needs into consideration it falls lower on the list. Unless UAlbany burns down in the next month- most likely D will find herself there come fall. There is a SLIGHT chance if a spot at RPI opens that she would take it, but other schools are looking more and more remote. The ones to which she has been admitted and which are “showing the love” she refers to as “stalking” her. One is up to over 30 contacts in the last 4 weeks what with emails, letters, calls, etc. According to her, desperation is not pretty. Nice to see the power shift that has occurred.

Nothing in the mail today, waiting for a letter from Pomona. Otherwise waiting for Amherst, Duke, Stanford, Cornell, Dartmouth (though have a likely, yahoo), Columbia, UPenn, and of course HYP!!! Don’t know how we will make it next four days. Having WUSTL and Northwestern makes the wait a teeny bit more tolerable.

Well, yesterday we had some good news, some great news, some tears, some disappointing news, and a bad case of the giggles…and that was all from one envelope!

My daughter was accepted to a good LAC. She got a beautiful letter saying that she was chosen for a $15,000 annual scholarship. (That caused my tears.) Then we pull out the financial aid letter. I say “Ok, here is the scholarship. Hmm, it looks like the rest is $44,000 of loans per year.” My daughter’s response? “I’m not gonna look at that right now. They’re really killing my vibe.”

I started giggling…yes “a vibe-killer” is the perfect way to describe it. I can’t believe the range of emotions I felt in 5 minutes.

Finally, some good news for D (after 4 rejections between Friday at 3 pm and this morning at 8 am) – accepted at Occidental, with $! Phew! Now she can breathe a little easier before the next round of news next week.

Congrats to TessaR’s D – that’s an awesome choice to have.

Congrats to all others who got some good mail/emails. It’s just one more week…

Congrats to all the good news and so sorry about the disappointments. Im in Fl with ds, so while you mentally ride this rollercoaster, im physically on one too! Ill shout out a good luck to all for happy news this final decision week.
Good news here! DS got into UVA and echols scholar! As I’ve said he is happy for me to check the email, so I found out last night. He doesn’t know yet and im letting him have a college free weekend, so he probably will find out snail mail before he thinks to check email! That shout be fun for him.

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC App

Loving the good news here including the better than expected FA! I love the kids’ resilience even more. We have one in the mail and several others due next week. Weekends usually fly by which I don’t like generally, but, this weekend, it is a good thing! Must give a shout out for Carleton. A real gem in a beautiful MN comunity (shared with St. Olaf). Very bright kids and wonderful professors! Would have been perfect for D if she did not want a change of scenery.

S just got a large envelope from Pomona, so it’s been a great day especially heading into next Wednesday’s lottery. S now has choices he is very happy with and that makes us thrilled.

Congrats to all the good news in just the last 4 hours! I agree that you have to check in very frequently to stay up to date. Lots of news flying around.
