Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

UT84…That package was every parent’s dream! Congratulations!!

Congrats ut, amazing! He should be very proud.

UT – Yippee! That’s fantastic. I feel that part of this ‘game’ is getting out of college with as little debt as possible. I’ve never heard of ‘summer money’ though. Is that so he can take unpaid internships in his field?

brklnmom – Welcome! Twins? What fun!

Why did so many people here apply to Bowdoin?

Not irrelevant, and that actually helps! :D

In answer to Novelisto’s question, Bowdoin was a last minute add-on, after a stinging ED rejection from another school. It was not high on my list, due to the location. It’s about as far from here as one could go, and still stay in the U.S.!

UT - I am very impressed. Your son rocks!

Looked like a cool school, and in my son’s eyes, as far from CA as you can get! ;)

Crossposted with oregonianmom–we think alike!

OMG, UT84321! Congrats!!!

Momdoc, sorry about WL from Bowdoin…

I am not entirely sure yet, but I think it supports undergraduate research.

@lynjoy, sorry to hear about Georgetown rejection, but boy he’s got lots of nice choices.
@brklynmom, welcome! And grats on Bowdoin x 2 plus merit $$ (and glad no hearts are breaking over nasty ol’ rejections).
@HighHead grats to daughter on Bowdoin.
@oregonianmom, yuck to thin envelopes – we hates them.
@UT big WOW and grats on son’s full ride plus at CMC! Good thing he wasn’t drinking a cup of coffee when you told him or his laptop would have been sprayed!
@momdoc, sorry on waitlist – glad it wasn’t a top choice.

My daughter had FOUR decisions waiting in the mailbox. Rejection from her reachy reach, which was not surprising, plus another school that was a little reachy. A somewhat surprising rejection from Skidmore – she’d seemed like a good fit, thought the interview went well, plus it was the very first college she looked into seriously. And not even a waitlist – adcoms work in mysterious ways.

It does not feel good to get triple rejected in one day. I guess it was made a tiny bit better by the fact that none of these colleges were in top place.

An acceptance from Sarah Lawrence, one of her top three (still waiting for the other two – they are the only ones yet to reply!) A beautiful packet and hand-written note on the letter. Unfortunately, I had not found cc back when she applied and was pretty ignorant in the ways of financial aid. SLC does not offer merit aid at all. And apparently they don’t figure need-based aid by the Harvard model. They offered her $1,500 in work/study and… drumroll… a $300 grant! Seriously!? What’s the point?

Well, still better than quadruple rejections. And her attitude seems good – she said at least now there are less colleges to think about.

Oh, and some actual good news in the mailbox: Beloit, who had already offered a nice scholarship, offered a small but still significant need-based grant!

I actually think that as a group the Pacific Northwest schools–like Willamette, Whitman, and Lewis and Clark–are significantly under-appreciated because they are not well enough known on the east coast.

Congrats to all of those with good news and even better with $$$$$. Big hugs to those with no’s and the WL’s. We are waiting on 7 schools. Yikes!! I don’t know if I can hold on much longer.

I agree the schools from the NW are underrated. My oldest D has many friends that attend some of the prives Univ of Portland, Willamette, Lewis and Clark and she attends Whitman. It is a great school that doesn’t receive much press on CC.

Good luck to all those that are waiting. I could really use a margarita. Happy Hour is about to begin!

UT - Congratulations!! You are living my dream! And you bet that changes the leaderboard! It’s getting fast and furious around here. Geez, you step away for a couple hours and bamm bam bam, there are papers flying everywhere. Personally, I am wishing we had more of those surprise envelopes with FA but alas, I am only waiting on Wisc. and a small Pitt alumni thing, and then we will have final $ and decision making. Waiting only on Cornell and now that I understand how rich I am, we will not see any aid beyond those sad little loans…

Hi All

Congrats to so much NEWS!!! Hugs to those not sohappy.

True, never heard of any of them. That said, I have a southern belle friend who hadn’t heard of many of the schools I knew well in the NE…
Part of the hazard of us all living in a huge nation, richly blessed with many great resources.

Welcome to brklynmom! and congrats to your twins. I hope you can avoid the cc-addiction that so many of us suffer from ;)

UT - what great news…and unexpected, even better!

snoozn - that was way too much news in one mailbox!

How many of you are sending your kids cross country? We are in NC and when S applied to Pomona, I thought nothing of it…until he got that envelope this weekend and he is ALL over it. I love what I know of the school. The thought that he would actually go 3000 miles away never occurred to me. Depending on the outcome of Wed, we may be visiting. No decisions, but as of today it is in his top 2.

Flmathmom: sorry about the Olin news but man, did your S get into marvelous schools & w/ great $$$. I know that it’s disappointing to not get into a first choice (and I’m trying to steel myself for Wed when my S hears back from his), but I have no doubt that he’ll find joy and success at one of his acceptances. Rice and Harvey Mudd are truly amazing schools!

Emmybet, like Flmathmom S’s, I think your daughter has some wonderful choices. I wish all her news was positive, particularly at her first choice, as I do for everyone’s kids on this forum, but you made wise selections when you formed her list and it’s paid off. i’m hoping that she’ll be in my neck of the woods b/c I’d love to be a point-person/mom for you and her. hugs to her and to you.

OWM, thank you so much for your sentiment and perspective. I’m not feeling confident about my S’s first choice on Wed, a school which deferred him. Hearing you so calm on the other side is reassuring. I’m anxious b/c I hate to see my S hurting. It stinks. He’ll get over it and already has some great acceptances, including one to Bowdoin today, but he’s wanted the other school for a very long time and for all the right reasons. Yet, like many of you – yes, AmandaK, I think we’re twins, I believe in fate and what will be, will be.

emilybee – OH MY GOSH, what good news about Bates and $!!! That’s one hell of a school! and i think it was your S’s favorite? Man, he hit the jackpot.

Avonhsdad – great news from you too – Georgetown!!! Wow. Those people at vanderbilt clearly don’t know what they’re doing! Nice acceptance to start off this crazy week.

momofboston: i too don’t get your college news – huge scholarship$ but not the major??? sounds weird, maybe a mistake???

Funny, when my kids were little and we’d go shopping for b-day presents for their friends at the local Kids-R-Us, I’d sing “you can’t always get what you want but you can get what you need” if either of them wanted something for themselves and then I’d give them a big kiss and say “that’s just what you need.” It almost always got a laugh.

researching4emb, if my S doesn’t get into his first choice on Wed, he’ll probably also take the month to make up his mind. He’s been lucky and has many wonderful choices – i’ll have to be patient as he sorts through his options.

lynjoy: i hear you – it takes one rejection or in my son’s case, deferral, to make them think that their applications to other schools are doomed. thankfully, your son already had amazing options from which to choose. georgetown’s loss!

highhead – sounds like our kids have a problem in common – many of the same schools are being considered here. congrats on her acceptances!

classof2015, oregonianmom, so sorry for the dings. hoping for better news the rest of the week. big hugs to you and your kids.

brklynmom, sounds like your twins got the news they wanted most! congrats!

UT -OH MY GOSH!!! That award is astounding. How do you pass that up at such an amazing school no matter what else comes his way? I would have had weak knees if I opened up such a letter. Hearty congrats to you and your son. And I second your sentiments towards all the posters here and on CC in gen’l. The guidance and the wisdom gained here made a difference for us; i’m sure of it. And having all of you to share the ride has made it not just bearable but also pleasurable – despite the ups and downs.

momdoc – sorry about bowdoin but glad to hear that it wasn’t a top choice and would have sent your kid so far.

snoozn, sorry to read of the triple rejections – that stinks but so happy for the sarah lawrence acceptance. i live not far from that school – it’s gorgeous, right on metronorth to NYC, and incredibly fine. wish they came up w/ more money but it’s nice to be accepted. and I’m especially psyched by your beloit news – from everything i’ve read, that school seems amazing. i think it should be on my S2’s list.

amandaK: as always, you crack me up. i guess we’re all much more fabulously wealthy than we ever thought we’d be. who knew?

@Rom828: My D is likely NOT going cross country, but my S is a junior in college across the country. Actually, at the moment, he’s abroad in another country!

Pomona is amazing, and your son is a lucky kid to have that as an option.

UT84321, Wow! What a great option! My 2012 daughter plans to apply to Scripps where she’d be on the high end in hopes of getting a scholarship so that she can take advantage of all that the Claremont Colleges have to offer. We’ve never been to visit but the info and photos on the web look great!
2011 son got financial aid info from Rose Hulman - they say we can afford 37K - better than the 45K I guesstimated using college calculators but still too much for our comfort- but good to know for next year’s estimations when we’ll have two in college. Good thing S1’s not interested in Rose. S1 and Dad just got back from another visit to IU. S1 can’t decide whether to borrow $ to attend Purdue or attend IU on merit. His housing choices are rapidly evaporating at IU but we’ve done all we can to help him make his decision. He’s been non-committal through this whole process. The only ap he did on his own was Purdue’s. We just have to step back and wait to see what he does by May 1. It will be a very different experience with super motivated sister next year.

My gosh, you go away for a few hours and you’re pages behind.

Congrats to all the Bowdoin acceptances! It’s a great school.

UT, that is one fantastic package! Congrats to your son!

Boo to skimpy FA from Sarah Lawrence.

Where did I read that everyone is attending their favorite school by halloween? I think that will be true in most cases.
Why Bowdoin? One of my daughters’ overstressed college office counselors had a crazy moment of clarity in the middle of our one and only college meeting (after he had seen about a hundred other totally stressed out NYC families). he awoke, as if from a dream, and blurted it out. We went home and looked it up, and you know, it made sense for her. Miracles!

Another Bowdoin waitlist here. Ups and downs, what an interesting week.

I really like this school, and I’m glad there are so many here who got the big packages!

Bowdoin is one of my favorites- we took D to visit summer of her 9th grade year as we vacation in Bailey Island (about 25 minutes away) each year. Good luck to all the admits (and pm me if you want advice about a historical guest house situation not too far away) and condolences for all those that got the thin letters.
