Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

phbmom - Congrats to your daughter on her West Point appointment. That is a great honor plus there are no FA issues to deal with!

phbmom - congrats to your daughter and to you!

Congrats to phb mom and d about going to West Point!

West Point! Way to go to your daughter phbmom! The academies are harder to get into then most Ivy League schools! Serious wooo hooo!

phb - wow, congrats to your D! I know at least two kids from S’s school are going to the academies (navy and air force) they have already sent out invites to their going away parties. Not sure if anyone if going to West Point though.

collegemaw - congrats on scholarship. S did not apply to a lot of outside scholarships. Many wanted a recommendation (which I hesitated to have him ask teachers for…again!) or could only be used towards tuition, which is pretty much covered with school scholarships.

Wow, take a few days off from this thread and all kinds of good things are happening!

Congrats to all the kids that have made decisions and are now on dry land…here’s hoping the ship will soon be empty!

D is back to normal - no more passing out! (thanks for the well wishes!) Spent the pass few days with NO college talk, okay, just a little! She did tell me she was leaning more towards Northeastern, H was not happy when he heard that. We are going to Boston University tomorrow for the day and then will head over to Northeastern to just walk around. I would like it better, for purely selfish reasons, if she went to RPI! She did say that she should be ready to make a decision on Saturday - didn’t specify what Saturday though!

So, we are still on the big boat, she can’t play a musical instrument or sing so I guess she can be the waitress delivering all the drinks to the parents. Remember parents - tip big, she is going to college!

Again, congrats to everyone and here’s hoping the ship will be empty soon! (If we end up being the last ones on board, I will make sure to shut off all the lights, lock the doors etc!)

Congratulations to phbmom’s daughter! What an accomplishment!

PHBMOM: Congrats to your daughter. What a great honor!

Congratulations to Flmathmom’s son and collegemaw’s D on the scholarships.

phbmom: Congratulations and thanks to your daughter for her willingness to serve.

Another Eagle Scout in our troop will be a senior at the academy this fall. Deservedly, he got incredibly loud and enthusiastic standing ovations at every award ceremony at the end of his senior year. I hope your daughter’s classmates and teachers are equally as proud.

Whoo Hoo PHBMOM!! Congrats to your dd!
Tell her that the CC “family” is all so very very proud and humbled by her accomplishment and service!

Varsity Sport, Prom, Senior Week, APs, final exams, Formally saying goodbye to the two other schools (one has a card to return, the other IDK) - these are the things filling the next 6 weeks for Kiddo and the fam :)

I need to start thinking abou that 18 little gifts for 18…Has anyone else done it? What ideas can you share?

phbmom: Congrats to your family! I am humbled by those who are willing to serve.

fogfog: I am doing the 18 gifts for 18th birthday. The birthday is tomorrow! Must say that I am “cheating” a little. Two of the 18 gifts are AP study books. (Yes, he should have started before this.) I also have a couple of clothing items. A pair of pants to replace his “favorite” pants that he left in a dorm at a college visit – boys! (Did he even look around to see if you had all his stuff??? Who knows what else he left?) Also, a couple of books that I know he’ll enjoy. When I got down to filling in the 18, I resorted to small things he’ll need for his dorm room – I even went as far as buying paper clips, a stapler, an address book (that I filled with family addresses/email addresses), and note cards for correspondence. (Okay the note cards will probably last a lifetime.) Not sure he’ll be thrilled with the office supplies, but I was running out of ideas. Oh, also a subscription to Sports Illustrated for college. I did that as an IOU, as I didn’t want to change the address.

Morning all! Congratulations phbmom!!!
No news here, went through all the old college visit files for more info on rutgers and pitt. Actually found a Rutgers map (never saw any on our 2 open house visits) it is the size of a state map you get from AAA and you still need a magnifying glass to read it. Pitt tonight and tommorow - just dh and ds. Ds set up a meeting with the marching band director, that should seal the deal. Let’s all take a moment to pray for blue skies.
Oh and here’s my funny story - ds got an invite to play with the Rutgers band at the campus open house day (public not just students, 4/30) because he sought that table out at the open house and he’s begging me to let him go. Told him if he committed to them, then sure, otherwise No. He of course thought it would “help” in his decision making. Seriously is there a school out there where he could just major in drum majoring?

Congrats on West Point! One of my son’s best buddies was hoping to hear yesterday but his vote got moved to next week-we have our fingers crossed he makes it!

So sorry to hear when the money doesn’t work out-I would also vote against visiting the school-but if you can’t get the money back on the tickets taking the trip.

FLMath I am going to buy one of those machines. My husband is a very loud snorer and everyone in my family claims I am to but until provided with evidence I can hear I refuse to believe it.

OhioMom: you are putting me to shame. I think I have eight gifts–all from ThinkGeek! Today I need to find the other 10. Dollar store, here I come.

My focus has been on finding lactose-free ice “cream” and gluten-free cake for the party tomorrow. DS has one friend who can’t do dairy and another that can’t do gluten. I suggested that the gluten-free friend just eat ice cream and the lactose-intolerant one just do cake, but he pleaded with me to try to make concessions for everyone. Tough to do in this small town.

amanda I would really like to see our two sons in action out in the world-does he like the Amazing Race? Do you think they’d get through the first round?

ohiomom24 maybe it is a boy thing? I just want to get this kid to the bus at school Saturday for his trip-if I can just make it to then.

I could go on and on but why bother-he has no concept of time. My MIL told me years ago when I first starting dating her son that he had no concept of time-I didn’t fully realized what that meant but boy I sure do now-especially since it was passed down to his son.

I really hope the Pitt visit goes well!

Mommylaw–I am having trouble justifying paying $40-60k more for daughters education also. I want to buy her a car with the money we save, and she finishes school debt free. Daddy may be making this decision in her best interests–We’ll see. Hopefully she accepts my bribe!

AIT YAI YAI!!!

Why do I see the safety as a sunny touristy port with money in our pockets, no pressure and fun, and the high cost schools a Somalian pirates taking my daughter for hostage…innate frugality?

OWM: I pm’d you with some ideas.

Oh I just re-read mommylaw-NON-refundable tickets-I guess I would take the vacation but skip the college.

I like the imagery vanmo1-I guess it comes down to the best decision for your family. I am in the best value camp so I would pick the best financial option unless I felt there was a compelling reason to pay the extra money and I have it available to pay.

Just drop me at Shutter Island, I am ready–no lighthouse please
