Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Anyone else including the Byrd Scholarship in their spreadsheets? Need to take it out.

[Department of Education Fares Well in Budget Deal - High School Notes (usnews.com)](http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/high-school-notes/2011/04/13/department-of-education-fares-well-in-budget-deal)

In Missouri, the $1000 went automatically to a top percentage of students based on ACT and GPA. Based on past year’s recipients, our son would have qualified for the extra $1000.

Sigh.

I know my son applied for this-at least he was given the papers and I think he actually did that one-I’ll have to check that out-thanks for the info. :)

OOPS it’s gone-I misread that article. Oh well…no comment.

We’ve told our kids that we can only pay so much and after that, they will have to take out loans to bridge the gap. Our kids are not money stupid and it’s been up to them to decide what they value. Our older kids were able to find very nice private schools that left them with just a few thousand dollars to pay off.

Youngest son will probably make a higher salary and may a bit more in debt but very willingly threw out some great colleges (Elon, Marist) because they gave no aid. I think it’s good if they have some skin in the game too.

Off to Boston later today for the LAST accepted students visit, hoping for blue skies!

Well, my big tough DS goalie is down with a stomach bug – after school yesterday, he had a temp of 101.3 and said his throat was really sore; then he woke me up at 1:00 a.m. and said he’d been throwing up multiple times. I’ve already emailed work and school and said neither of us is coming today. He woke up a few minutes ago, still has 101 temp, throat still hurts, head hurts, said he threw up “double digit” times last night. I gave him about 1/3 cup of Gatorade and said if that stays down, we’ll take some ibuprofen for the fever and maybe drink a little more. Wonder if I even need to call the doc’s office or just let this run its course . . . yuck.

Pepper: our son also received the paperwork for it. It was very easy. Just ACT/SAT/GPA. I think it was due in March–before the funding was cut.

There is a thread about it on the Financial Aid page. It appears to be a done deal.

The next shoe to drop for us could be the state’s Bright Flight program. It was cut to $1,500 last year. Two weeks left in the legislative session. Haven’t heard any rumblings one way or the other.

cgpm59 does he have a history of strep? If so worth a visit because those are all signs of strep-as I know all too well from multiple times dealing with it.

If not put the poor fella back into bed with a bucket. :(

OWM too bad about that-I hope the other state items stay there for your son.

Yeah- I second the strep Dx.

So last night I get an email from another mother at D’s school with the title, “Prom”. This is the mom whose S neglected to tell her last year that my D and her S were meeting at prom and “going as each other’s date”. So this year the same boy and D are going again, just as friends same as before. (She had asked me at the PTA meeting a month back if I’d heard anything, asked questions, etc and I repeatedly said she should talk talk to her son- because I didn’t want to be in the middle and things were still a little flexible re prom between the two kids at that time.)
So the mother wrote that her son had told her that D and he were going to prom and she wanted to know “what color dress D was wearing so she could get her some flowers”- or maybe we could provide a swatch so she could match it? I went hightailing to D to ask her how she wanted me to respond. I sent a carefully worded response on how thoughtful she was being and that D thought white/cream flowers would be best, not pink, but she would be happy with whatever the S wanted to do. The mother also indicated that she was looking to get him an outfit to match D, even though D and the son had already talked about him wearing the same black suit/black shirt with a new tie this year. Yikes. I hate being in the middle of a mother and her son.

@fogfog - I did the 18 things; easier for a girl though. Some ideas that might work for your S: mini flashlight keychain, Naked Roommate book, voter registration form, lottery tickets, small candy bars and gum, coffee mug and Starbucks gift card.

I just ordered D a college T-shirt for her chosen school so she’ll have it in time for her school’s College Day where all the students and faculty wear their college gear. We’ll announce her decision to the family by having her wear her shirt at a family birthday party this weekend. Having the decision made is a big relief. I am a little sad about sending in the “no” postcards though. I really liked some of those schools.

Darn, Robert Byrd scholarship is gone? D applied for that one but wasn’t expecting to get it.

OWM - The Betty Crocker gluten-free cake mixes are delicious and should be available in your supermarket. They taste just like regular cake (to me, anyway). If the additions to the mix call for milk, use rice milk instead, for the lactose-free guest.

Kinderny - Momma’s Boy, much? Sheesh.

Thanks for the 18 for 18 ideas. Stealing these!

This group is so helpful. I had no clue that Betty Crocker made gluten-free cake mixes. Heading out at lunch time to check our local grocery store.

So, maybe someone can help with this: I’m looking for a graduation announcement format that would allow me to include a wallet-size photo. This is for our out-of-town friends and family who won’t be getting the party invite. I found one but it is a single sheet, not folded and I was hoping for a folded (like a greeting card) version that would have the slits to hold the picture. Sort of like the slits for a gift card. Any ideas for sites to search?

^ I am using The Stationary Studio…
Yo can customize any digital photo card to be a grad announcement.
The one I am using was actually an invitation and I am using one text block for the grad annoucement and one block for the college choice announcement. Part of the card will be the photo.

I hear that Costco can do this sort of thing too…

I am going to start my lsit of 18 for 18…

When someone I know turned 21, his parents gave his 21 $100 bills. I can’t imagine…

Yes, we’ve had strep in the house over the years . . . including little brother about 5 weeks ago. But the vomiting hasn’t ever usually been part of that . . . I think I will call the doc’s office and see what they think. It’s now been about 5 hours since he last threw up, and he’s had about half of a fruit-juice popsicle thing, and he thought some regular popsicles would be good, so I’m going to get some of those shortly.

Thanks, fogfog. I will check it out.

What I was looking for was a format that will allow me to put an actual wallet-size photo into pre-cut slits. I don’t want to have the photo printed into the card. Does that make sense?

When our older son turned 18, his best friend’s crazy mother gave him 18 $1 bills since he could now go to the strip joint on the outskirts of town.

OWM: Okay, well, I think I’ll pass on the $1 bills for the strip joint!

As for your graduation announcements, I have made my own slits and inserted wallet-sized photos using an exacto knife. I did this for my older son’s announcements. I didn’t have many to do, so it wasn’t a big deal. I just made a cardboard template and cut the slits in each card individually.

^ Thats a good idea…

18 $1…for a strip club…what the heck was she thinking…thats just gross!

How is everyone doing on the grad photo diet goal? I was pretty far behind, and have made a tiny bit of progress, 5 lbs…loong way to my goal though…so staying away from the ship’s all ya can eat buffett!

Grad Anouncements

Thanks to all the input on my D’s dilemma. I think we’ll still take the trip and will visit the campus, but won’t do the whole admitted student thing. (Madbean- yes it is our “shared school” :frowning: )

phbmom: Congratulations to your D on West Point. What an amazing accomplishment.

Vanmo1- Agree that it is really hard to justify the addt’l $$ for undergrad. If it were
$10k or 20k- maybe but $40-60k per year just seems insane.

I did the 18 for 18 thing and got a couple of pairs of sunglasses (she loves sunglasses)…found them really cheap $2-$3 at Kohls on clearance since it was end of the summer), cute socks, itunes card, favorite candy, gum, couple more $5 giftcards to Starbucks, McDs. Her kinda big gift was also included in the 18 things: tickets to a Falcons football game. Don’t think she really noticed anything else after she saw those.

Big news for us and I had been holding back on posting for fear of jinxing her…but here goes. D is trying out for the cheerleading squad at her college. Tryouts are this weekend and we will know results on Sunday. They do several cuts throughout the process so I am hoping she makes it through to the last day. If she makes it that far, I feel like she should make the squad. I never would have thought she would want to be a college cheerleader but here we are. I think this opportunity is also what lead her to pick this school. She went to a tryout prep clinic in January and came home ready to enroll. I am so nervous, I don’t know how I am going to make it through this.

Hahahaha! That’s ironic laughter, as we’ve received our first of four annual ransom demands. :)

Whoo-hoo for the young woman joining the long grey line, and I’m always glad to hear happy Pitt news.

The 18 $1 bills sounds like something out of “Friday Night Lights”.
