missypie, I’ve read and internalized your message. D1 couldn’t understand why I’m insisting on seeing her transcript this fall. She forgot that, for instance, her outside school language credits and grades weren’t showing up on her transcript in her sophomore year.

SAT/ACT scores on transcripts: you can get bit either way. I remember one longtime CC poster who back before ScoreChoice carefully ensured that his D didn’t send standardized test scores to her high school so they could make sure that schools only got the higher scores (between ACT and SAT). Then it turned out that the school didn’t recommend the D for some scholarships because they didn’t know if she’d qualify because they didn’t know her scores. Tread carefully no matter what.

D1 is in the “not appearing on the transcript” camp. D2, who freezes up during tests, will most definitely be in the same camp.

Yeah, with the transcripts remember that at some point there are human beings typing in and coding stuff, so error is likely - it’s mind-numbing detail work. No one wants to hurt your kid, but leaving off the AP class code may mean loss of merit money at some schools.

I see your point about scores being on the transcript. Her sophomore SAT II scores were pretty disappointing but it showed me how poorly she had been taught the subject matter since they were nothing like her ACT and SAT scores. I’m hoping that any schools that ask for SAT IIs will take her junior scores more seriously than her sophomore ones or just look at her much better ACT scores. I was picking up her transcript to submit it to our state boarding school for gifted juniors and seniors as they plan her schedule for junior year. I especially wanted them to see the AP tests that she had taken since she self studied 3/4 tests she had taken. Also, according to our state law, since she has a passing score on the US govt AP test, she should be made exempt from the course and given credit for it. It sounds like they never put AP test results on transcripts so I will have to photocopy her score reports and give them to her new school. I do think her new school should know what she’s accomplished since she’s aiming for AP National scholar by the end of her junior year and all her AP exams probably say more about her as a student than the transcript from her mediocre former school.

He got hired! S got hired for his first job as a camp counselor. They only want him for 4 weeks instead of the full 8 weeks, but that works too. I asked him if he would mind his younger sis for a few weeks when he is not working and he agreed. It will be better than doing outdoor landscaping.

When will the ACT begin to appear timewise? I made the mistake of thinking midnight for the SATs and waited up for them only to be disappointed. Yep I am that nutzy about this stuff. The application season is just around the corner, and I wish it was next year at this time already

All of you make me realize how very lucky my daughter is to have a guidance counsellor who really does have some form of a relationship with her. No doubt this is due to the fact that this GC only has about 30 students to advise. I will be sure to keep reminding myself to appreciate that!

We had also heard the 2 safeties, 2 likelies/matches, and 2 reaches. I am quite sure that my daughter won’t apply to more than 6 or 7, at the very most (of course, now that I say that, watch her consider 15-16…!). Obviously, the Common App has changed everything…I remember just applying to 3 - a long time ago - !

Regarding the ACT scores, is the writing score section graded differently, and is it then ultimately merged into the composite score? Or does the writing score just stand on its own? e.g. 36 in english/math/science and 7 in writing (totally made up scores!)?

kumitedad,
no waiting for the ACT here since D1 felt she did not do very well, didn’t like it compared to the SAT and won’t do it again.
Of course we’ll take a peek but no one is holding their breath!
She’s signing up for the June SAT to try to get the math up, possibly the writing too…CR score was great. D2 (7th grade) will be doing that June SAT also for CTY.

kumitedad, I understand your need to know, NOW. Funny, how S takes it as it comes, I sit there waiting for the results to appear. S looks when he gets then snail mail or I tell then they are online. who is driving this train? In my household, me right now. H is really pushing S to take over though.

I hope everyone got the ACT results they wanted :)

Have you noticed that some schools have horrible websites? LuckyBoy and I made a list (using the Fiske book) of schools noted for environmental science, poli sci/government, and history. He eliminated right off anything smaller than his high school and/or in rural areas. He asked me to sort through the schools for AP credit, the lack of a strict core curriculum, and the availability of merit aid/financial aid. I visited the websites of 10 different schools last night. While some were beautifully laid out with excellent navigation, others were just horrid One shouldn’t have to rely one the search function to answer VERY BASIC questions about COA and merit aid!!!

S was in a very good mood last night He said he’s ready for the AP Calc exam next week Another review session for APUSH tonight----apparently they are only up to Vietnam in class. Zoiks, the exam is next week too! Still frustrated and uncertain with AP Physics C. English Lang should be ok.

SAT on Saturday. I hope he can successfully downshift his math brain to not overthink the problems.

The ACT site says scores will be available the 26th. That will be a nice landmark to be past. I’m optimistic, but realistic.

Klucky - Are you looking at Tufts? My older D is a jr there majoring in Bio/Env Studies. She is perfectly happy. ES is always a double major, either with bio, engineering, or econ/poli sci. Sciences are very strong, really, it seems very few majors aren’t, but with the med school, vet school and dental school, plus being a major hub for nutrition, nursing, etc. it’s a tremendous place to be. Tufts is very well known for international relations and anything related to that. As for core curriculum, it is “middle of the road;” it has distribution requirements but not as intense as UChicago, not as loose as Brown. She liked where it fit on that spectrum. In terms of her major, she is thrilled; the location, atmosphere, size all work very well for her.

I can’t say much about their website, though! It’s been a while since I looked. I know what you mean, though, generally. But isn’t it amazing that these days we can read course catalogues and all that, just sitting at home? I usually use the College Board site for general comparisons of cost, size, etc. and save the school websites for the specifics (with varying success). One thing I’ve found you can’t really trust the CB listings for is what majors are offered - if you try to do a specialized search for majors, you’ll lose out on some wonderful schools and get some that are totally irrelevant. Otherwise the site is so, so helpful.

Thanks for the heads up! I just checked hers and she got higher than she’d aimed! She’s in great shape now - could do better, but is solid for her matches and good enough to try for her reaches. Hurray! The writing score isn’t up, but it doesn’t change the composite, and it’s likely to be good, the least we were worried about.

Tufts is on The Big List. I’m going alphabetically and am only up to the "G"s He’s thinking enviro with poli sci or gov’t, with an eye to future public service or an NGO.

Of course, this is all subject to change. A few months ago he was certain about engineering (mechanical or civil, with environmental focus)! But it’s so nice that he’s starting to look. He suggested road trips this summer------------without his sisters LOL

Even though D achieved her goal, she’s disappointed. A couple of days ago she extracted a promise from me that if she achieved a score of X, I’d buy her a Vera Bradley tote. She got X-1. Even though X-1 was the score she needed for the schools on her list, she really wanted that bag!
