Good Morning. I’d like to ‘join’ the parent group of students of 2011/2015. I found CC a few weeks ago and boy am I addicted! There is a wealth of information. I thought I knew a fair amount about the process, but am finding more and more, reading others posts, and asking questions, that there is a lot more that can be learned to help us navigate the next year. Is there an application I need to fill out and do I need LOR? :)

My S is a good student, plans on majoring in engineering (mech/aero). He has two target schools in VA. One is a reach…it is a reach for everyone, and one a match…but never a safety for anyone. We are exploring safeties. Because he’s aero, that needs to be OOS. We then run into OOS tuition and he’d have to qualify for merit aid to bring tuition to the level of VA in state tuition. Others on this board have been really helpful in the start of our search for those safeties!

I work out of our home, he’s the middle of three boys. Work takes a back seat. I am grateful we have the luxury to do that right now.

I hope we are a ‘match’ for this group! :)
Peace

ps. My grammar is lousy, but I try hard. lol

baystmom - Welcome to CC! Youll find a lot of helpful information here.

S took 2 SAT IIs yesterday and is done with the standardized testing (except for APs). He thought he did OK on them. After the test he and 2 of his friends went to the movies. Most of his other friends were stressing up about the APs and did not join.

As crazy as it sounds, but he is less overworked as usual. Most of his classes are APs and last week he had the last classroom test of the year. The amount of the homework is also down. I can really see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

keylimepie,
Thanks I hope I can be an asset to the group. I know I will get much needed information and support here!!!

My son sat for the SATs for the first time yesterday and felt pretty good. You never know until you get the scores. He takes the SAT2s and ACTs in June. He’s hoping his AP Chem prep will help here. I’m just trying to keep the stress at a minimum. He, like many other students, have that 'magic number, in their heads. I keep reminding him it’s one test, on one day… he can take it again. That’s the beauty of superscore! :)

Anyone else’s offspring have both SAT and Prom yesterday? The closest SAT site is 35 miles from us, so it made for a very long day and night. Right now, five juniors are sound asleep in my basement. Average ACT composite down there is 31! A smart group who played Rock Band and Apples to Apples after prom rather than “other” activities.

I wonder what time they will wake up for breakfast.

I would like to join in too. D2 took her SAT1 yesterday and then had to meet her team bus for an hour ride to her softball tournament which lasted until 7:30 pm. Long day as well. She felt pretty good about the SAT but she was so stressed with it all on one day. I can’t even imagine having the prom after the SAT. Whew Olderwise…how did you manage that!

^^ sounds like our student would love that group…
big Rock Band and Call of Duty fans here…etc…
Nice when the kids have clean fun…thought C.O.D. is not my kind of game–and watching our students play makes me ill (motion sick)… isnt that weird.

SAT and Prom is a lot easier when you have the son. No hair, nails, makeup to do. Our son’s date (a tiny size 0) plays the bass drum in the band and they marched three miles in the town’s largest parade yesterday morning–after having been to the state music competition the two days before.

As for the clean fun–the kids who wanted “other” after-prom activities knew not to come to our house. We’re boring but safe.

Oh to be young again. I will nap this afternoon.

We are lucky to have proms over the next two weekends (gf goes to another school, LOVING this!! ). It’s in the middle of AP exams but at least not SATs! One friday night after the APush exam (crummy timing), and the other the following Saturday. Our ‘after parties’ consist of twister, guitar hero, apples2apples, & a bonfire. My son said they wouldn’t want to stay past 1pm because they’d be too tired. One after party is simply movies at the gf’s house. We are lucky there.

Because of the distance we are dealing with the overnight issue… it may be one of them in their bedroom, the other on the bottom floor, with a parent on the sofa in the family room! lol… They are good kids, but even good kids can make poor decisions at 16 & 17 given the opportunity. Is that treating them like children? I don’t know. Why even risk it?

^^Haha blueiguana, we’re got the back-to-back prom, gf at another school issue here too We’ve ordered a tux for LuckyBoy----the complete package was the same price as 2 rentals! At least both proms are after APs. Not sure about after proms yet, but we’re hosting the preprom (I get pictures!!) for S’s prom.

May I join the 2011 gang? My younger dd is a junior who any day now will be studying for her AP tests. She already took the SAT and ACT, both in December, so she will wait to take the SAT again next fall. She is done with her 3 subject tests, which is a relief.

My older dd is a very happy college freshman, so I have survived this process once. I still have my worries, but this time around I have a better idea of what is in our control and what is not. So perhaps I have become more efficient in my worrying?

You all seem like a nice bunch to share the stress and the joy with!

Was anyone else a lurker on the 2010 thread? I read it to have a better idea of what is to come in the next year. I have one child, so no opportunity to learn from the first to benefit the others! This is going to be an exciting year for all of us!!!

blueiguana and baystmom, Welcome! Blueiguana, my grammer and spelling are hopeless. By 4th grade both kids knew enough than to come to me for English help. And it isn’t because English is my second language. Math and sci I can do. I work altered hours (start at 5:30) so I am home by the time the kids are, but I would love to work from home. Not sure it would be a good idea for me though, I would always be finding other things to do:laundry, bathrooms, cleaning, etc Getting up at 4am is killing me.

Baystmom, from MA also. Signed S up for the ACT in June just for the heck of it. Depending on how S does on Saturday’s SAT we may just say the heck with it. His SAT to GPA are already out of wack anyway.

No prom for S. He goes to an all boy school and doesn’t have a girlfriend. He told us that most of the boys who do have dates are going to their dates prom and skipping their own schools prom for some reason.

S is missing a Model UN conference today because he was sick last night. He slept in til noon. I think he is just exhausted from SAT and AP prep.

Welcome to all the new parents. We are all sharing a wonderful journey with our kids and each other. Almost everything I know about this process, I learned from other parents on this site. It is an amazing group of giving, caring people. Thank you all.

I have one son who is interested in engineering. We have visited GA Tech, MIT, Olin, WPI, CalTech & Harvey Mudd. In the Fall, we be going to Rice and maybe CMU. I’ve put reviews on CampusVibe but will be happy to answer any questions.

Fortunately my S is done with SATs and ACTs. He has 6 AP exams over the next two weeks. He had to reschedule his SAT IIs from yesterday to June b/c his Math Team coach scheduled a last minute competition for yesterday.

holliesue, not only am I a lurker on the 2010, I also lurked on the 2009 thread when I first discovered CC!

S is supposedly working on that common app essay he has to have for tomorrow’s Junior Advisory class. He’s trying to come up with something based on his experiences at Philmont with Scouts And he has a calc problem set and a reflection paper due for Social Justice… Me, I have a Mike’s :D

KLucky-if I had discovered CC back in 2009 I would have lurked there too!
My D is doing practice questions for AP USH test and also trying to study for AP Physics. I am so glad I am not a Junior in HS…way too much work and pressure. It certainly is much harder than it was in the dark ages when I was in HS! I am encouraging D to try to at least think about her common app essay. She is taking a creative writing class and it would be a great opportunity to get teacher feedback. So far she hasn’t bitten… :)
