Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

D2 is in the midst of AP testing as well and TONS of prom drama  She’s done with Stats & Calc and has APUSH & Chem to go. A major research paper for her Eng Lit class is due on Tuesday - same day as AP Chem test and her choir made it to state so she is gone all day Saturday for the choir competition!! Everyone at home is feeling her stress. I can’t wait for Memorial Day weekend…

Entomom: D1 told me that you were very helpful to her during her college application process - she is finishing up sophomore year in college. So…a belated Thank You!! D1 is thriving at her school and we can only hope that D2 will also find a place where she will be happy.

Here’s a link for Naviance from an older CC thread. I’ve used two or three of the ones here and they worked. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/4195580-post55.html</a> I think our HS is finally going to get this, I’m just hoping they can find money in the tight budget to get it this year.

I posted this on another thread, but it’s a good lesson!

I was suprised that the '10 son of a friend hadn’t chosen a school yet. It seems that they were surprised when his schools all came back with $0 need based aid, when the husband had been unemployed for a portion of the year and even when working, their income isn’t all that high. They called one of the schools - thank goodness! As the person went over the file item by item, she said, “And of course, with your income of $1 million, you don’t qualify for need-based aid…” Of course they about flipped. What a typo to make in your FAFSA! Now they are in the process of meeting in person with reps of his top three schools to try to salvage the situation.

Missypie- Wow! Typo indeed, but one anyone could make. I am prone to them and generally check and recheck things like that… then have H check. Even after that you can make errors. I’m so glad they are getting help!
I had lunch with friends yesterday and mentioned the FAFSA form (three of us have rising Sr’s, one a rising Soph.). One gal laughed at me and said ‘I hate to break it to you, but you’re not getting anything.’. I know we are in the big fat doughnut hole, but isn’t it in our best interest to fill out a FAFSA form anyway? My H is in graduate school and S3 is on his way to school in a few years. Do we need to FAFSA filed for any other reason other than to calculate the need aid for this year? I thought it was pretty standard paperwork… I know I am better posting this in the FA forum (I will), just brought it up, given the prev. post.

Blueiguana, I agree with you. I thought one should always fill out the FAFSA. We won’t qualify for need, but don’t some schools require it to be filled out for merit also? Or the way things are on a downhill trend with S’s GPA should I waste my time?? LOL. I guess we are lucky we don’t need or qualify for need based aid, but I know when H and I filled out the FAFSA 6 years ago when S was entering middle school, we about fell on the floor when we saw our EFC. I highly suggest those that may need aid to calculate your EFC now (if you haven’t already done so.) so you can focus your college search and ensure you have financial safeties.

We don’t qualify for need based aid but filled out the FAFSA and the CSS Profile when our older kids were applying for colleges. My daughters college did not use the FAFSA and older son applied there too and so will #3 so it will be another year with two financial forms for my husband to fill out. Our kids were able to get excellent merit aid from small privates and this would not have been possible without filling out the forms. Just because the FAFSA shows your EFC to be high does not mean that your B student cannot get aid.

For example, here is my oldest son’s school financial aid profile: [College Navigator - Roanoke College](<a href=“College Navigator - Search Results”>College Navigator - Roanoke College) You’ll see that 95% of the students get financial aid and the average amount is over $12,000.

Oops! Thought I was in the in the 3.0 - 3.3 gpa thread!

I want my D back. She spent all last evening studying for today’s math test instead of for tomorrow’s APUSH exam. She’s so stressed; I’m just trying to keep my distance.

Missypie- my feelings too. My d has literally locked herself in the room all week, only coming out for the bathroom and sustenance. I have barely spoken to her. Get this, they handed out the National Honor Society application forms Tuesday, due next Tuesday. When during AP week is she supposed to have time to write the essay and gather confirming signatures from teachers needed to verify ECs??? Ridiculous! My d is saying it just isn’t worth the stress to put the application together when the odds are less than even that she will be accepted! Can’t blame her!

Missypie, I can feel your pain. My S is in the same position. Wish there was more we, as parents can do for them.

He does see the light at the end of the tunnel. So that is a good sign! Another thing to add in the mix, his team are “League Champions” in his sport and start playoffs for State next week. So, a little stress, excitement all the way around.

All these juniors are under a great deal of stress. D was agonizing that she couldn’t stay up to study last night - she was exhausted plus she has seasonal allergies that are really bad this time of the year. On my suggestion, she went to bed at a reasonable hour and woke up early this morning to study. She was very chipper this morning.

Additional stress from high school - there was some kind of a security threat for today - according to D, most kids were not coming in at all today. I suggested she might want to do the same - stay home, sleep a bit more and then prep for USH tomorrow - she gave me a look that implied I was insane!

D1 was going to stay home today for the first few periods to study for APUSH. I’m not sure if she’s going to go in to school (and the final AP review session after school) or not. The teachers are also nervous for their charges.

She texted that she “failed” Calc yesterday. Maybe, maybe not, but apparently for her fail = 3. I suppose a 2 or 1 would be ‘epic fail’ and ‘nuclear epic fail’. :)

LOL!

We also won’t qualify for need-based aid (though unfortunately not with that kind of income  ), but I’m looking at websites to see what schools require FAFSA or Profile for merit aid. So far, it looks like none, which is great. Then the remaining item on my list is to call the FA office for each school D1 ends up applying to and ask an FA officer about their policy for awarding FA in subsequent years if a family’s circumstances change. Some schools apparently won’t consider FA in future years if the family didn’t apply prior to freshman year.

^^slithey: make sure Boston U is not on your list; they do require filing for FA to be considered for merit

Thanks rodney! It’s not on her list, but all things are possible. I am sure that there will be exactly ONE school on D1’s list that will end up requiring both forms, because that’s the way these things work. Oh yeah, and then D1 will end up either not getting into that school, or will get in and get no merit aid, or will get in and get aid but will decide to go elsewhere. Murphy’s law. :)

S just texted me, asking me to email his HS coach to let him know he wouldn’t be at practice this evening because he had to study for APUSH. I am happy he is taking my advice on this. He really has been cruising, not visibly stressing over all of these tests, which I guess is a blessing, but I was worried he would be in for a rude surprise come actual test time. If the coach benches him in Friday night’s game for it, so be it (although I honestly don’t think he will, he’s a HS teacher). School before sports.

Dandemom,
Thanks so much, it’s always wonderful to hear from kids who have spent time on CC, I’m glad that your D is enjoying college life!

Did y’all catch the AP reference on 30 Rock? Liz’s mom was telling her how special she was, “And remember when you got a 3 on that AP History exam?” I’d like to think that the writers remembered that this would air during an AP week but it was probably just a happy conincidence.

Will be so happy when today is over and Calc and APUSH are but a memory for our kids. Phew! Next week is not til next week. Happy Mother’s Day y’all. You deserve it!

Ditto FlMathMom!

LuckyBoy thought Calc wasn’t so bad, harder than some practice tests but easier than other work the teacher had them do. He was a little bit nervous about USH this morning so we’ll see how that works out. Physics C on Monday  and Eng Lang on Wednesday. His Austrian friend arrives on Monday evening, thankfully after the harder APs. It feels like the school year is over even though finals are the first week of June!

First Mother’s Day without my mom :frowning: I hope the weather will be nice so that I can be in the garden, my happy place, all day.
