Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

I’ve been thinking it will be better after the move when instead of waiting for my son to leave for school, I can start looking forward to when he’ll be coming home?

Still mostly lurking, but I appreciate all the insights here.

…but she’s packing!!!

I’ve stolen the heat/cold gel pack I bought for DS for school since my DH can’t find our heating pad. The thermacare wraps get too hot for me though – I burn!

Thanks, mathmomvt! That’s a great idea, we will do that. Hope your back feels better soon!
Concerning new items, I definitely wash all that can be washed ahead. Also, if the item is smaller than the box, I get rid of the box to save space in the car.

Do whatever works for you! I like them because I can forget about them for 8hrs. I have put a tshirt underneath them when they felt too hot before. Feel better soon!

Thanks for the advice on the packaging. These are the things that I obsess about.

We bought the thin hangers at BBB, and so far, they seem great. D was able to put some of her shirts on them, and the hook together, saving much needed space in those teeny weeny dorm closets.

D also plans on taking some stacking plastic drawers that I bought years ago the Container Store. She used them at camp this summer, and was able to have them as single drawers under her cot. Her dorm has lofted beds, with the desk completely under the bed, so she will most likely have them stacked once she moves in.

**The next new student move-in is University of Southern California, University of Missouri, Emory, Baylor and Pitt (band camp) on August 17th - today!
Move-in day is TODAY! Where did the summer go?

Congrats to all the anniversaries this month. :)

Happy Birthday to all the birthdays this month. :)

Happy healing to all the wisdom teeth extraction victims this month. (Our D - HS '14, was one of them earlier this month.) :(

Looks like we will hit post #2,000 on the NEW thread later today. :)

Our family attended a local alumni club welcome and send off party for S and all the new freshmen on Monday evening. This was a great oppurtunity for the approximately 15 or 16 or so kids from the greater Cleveland area to meet one another and for parents to also meet and mingle. The host family has two sons attending S’s school, classes of 2012 and 2014. Their boys were great with answering questions about the dorms, meal plans, moving-in, last minute schedule changes, last minute books, computers, parties, and a million more questions. This was a great program and I would recommend it for any of you who have an active alumni organization that puts on this type of welcome and send-off.

Thank you former captain of the SS Indecision. Do you have a title for this go round?

how do you keep them in place then?

Happy anniversary to other couples celebrating this week. We left Savannah this AM. We’re on our way to Raleigh area for two days. DH gets a driving break.

Morning All

The sorting continues here… I am all for washing before packing–as kiddo bought a few clothes yesterday and they have all been washed–in part because of lint, worries of dye run etc etc…

Kiddo admitted feeling a bit overwhelmed with the task ahead–Has done 2 passes through drawers and closets to sort and through out stuff so that the packing will be just packing not cleaning out etc.

One warning I’d like to point out–you might want to watch what they are pitching in the trash as there might be a momento or two you can sneak aside–just in case they were too rigorous in their haste to get the sorting/cleaning done. Kiddo hs thrown out all the graduaion cards earlier this summer–and I pulled them out and put them in the memento box—Glad I did as my FiL died 10 days after graduation—Anyhow–glad kiddo isn’t a pack rat ad at the same time there might be things kiddo would have liked to have years from now.

I am a little concerend that all of this will fit in the 4 bags to go on the plane…and we have a BBB pick up with the majority of the big stuff…

Hugs all around and thanks for the free breakfast 2Education…
poor DH is trying hard to not be a joy stealer and I know kiddo is feeling a bit guilty about the $. Kiddo is paying for a good portion of the recent purchases yet still…everyone is feeling it–We just aren’t the “shopping” type of family so it feels like alot right now.

As for experiencing it together–there are at least 5 of us who will be on the same campus next week…so I will be trying to smile and look the friendly relaxed mom out of the 1250 or so! haha

Here’s an old thread I bookmarked ages ago that might be of interest
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/891814-packing-ideas-out-state-students.html

though we’ve covered a lot of it.

We leave a week from Thursday and D1 has not started to pack yet. No worries. It will all work out. :)

For those of you who have not left yet, we shipped three boxes via UPS, ground. Each box was 18 x 18 x 18 and 30ish lbs. Total cost after AAA discount = $100. Boxes will be delivered to ds’s room. Only stuff in the car are laptop and other tech stuff, things needed for car trip, any irreplaceables plus trip stuff for DH and me including travel wheelchair. Plenty of room.

Ah amanda - you sure make me laugh!

Can’t join in with you guys commiserating about D not packing. She was out all weekend and Monday - but sat down yesterday morning, did her laundry and was all packed by the afternoon! Count me in as shocked! She has a few minor things to do - a few additional things to pick up, but that’s about it! She has two large suitcases, the bedding, three small plastic boxes for stationary, toiletries etc, one large tote box (her shoes!), a couple of cardboard boxes with stuff for the room and three garbage bags with her clothes on hangers. Could be a bit more efficient - but I think it will easily fit in the minivan, especially since we will be taking out the last row of seats. She packed a separate small duffel bag for her camping trip. Kind of funny - I wasn’t needed at all - not sure whether to feel good about it or bad :(

Last night was tough - spent a miserable day at work due to one thing or another, got home and went out for a bike ride. Would have been my mil’s 81st birthday (she passed away 3 years ago) - so everyone was a little nostalgic. Went to the temple and broke down there while thinking of D and how she would be away. Not looking forward to the rest of this week…

kinder - No new titles at this time. The post title on this thread says it all. We can stick with this thread for the next 4 years unless it gets too cumbersome and if so, we could start a new thread each year on July 1st. Hmmm… that sounds like an anniversary or a birthday - good reason to have chocolate cake :), tip one back :), and say cheers! :D

I was thinking that we should get everyone moved-in and settled for a few weeks and then I may consider a parents weekend countdown and definately a Thanksgiving break countdown.

By the way, I heard on the radio this morning, just 129 days to Christmas!

Arisamp- you should be very proud of your daughter. Hugs to you and your family.

Arisamp~Hugs to you and your family. Your emotions are totally normal, and many of us are in the same boat as you. I just try not to think and concentrate on the logistics
At this point it is all so overwhelming.

Yesterday, S2 washed all his new undergarments. Cleaned all his drawers.
Made a donation pile, and a keep pile. Pulled me aside when I got home and made me swear that I would never trash that one particular Tee-shirt. Of course, I agreed and ran upstairs to swallow my tears.

Tonight , we will have a photo session wearing their schools’ Tees. We will try to get the pets in as well. Owm any trick on keeping them still ;)

Waving to all

Just realizing we will be to parents weekend and back before everyone has finished moving in… very strange!

You mean like her church confirmation certificate?
