Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Laugh for the day!!

@arisamp-“Multi Variable Calc in the first semester. Does that sound like the right course for someone who has completed Calc BC successfully?” i guess it depends on schools and majors. My S scored 5 on AP Cal BC but he still needs to take M408C (differential and Integral Cal) the first semester and M408D the second semester because he is engineering major. I am a little disappointed that he can’t claim Cal credits but we are following what advisor recommends.

**Here we go again with another countdown! I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First move-in (excluding cadet training at West Point) is Southwestern University on August 12th.
Move-in day is in 35 days.

Last move-in is University of Chicago on September 18th.
Move-in day is in 72 days.**

I am one of those who is a big advocate for repeating calc if it is a core for your major. I was going to have S take Calc again even though he just finished BC calc and took honors calc jr year. But, then I looked at what other math classes he needs to take that might build off calc and I don’t see anything except statistics. He is a finance major and I assumed there would be something. Most of his finance classes want t good computer background. He registers on Monday so I will take a closer look before then, but I am now of the mind to let him use his AP credit to pass out of calc.

MM- glad yur D knew enough to tell you about the ants! I know some kids who wouldn’t say a thing. Fingers crossed she doesn’t have a problem at moveint.

MM - The ants sound horrible! I have no experience with fire ants and generally think of ants as an outside cute bug, but they sound terrible!

AvonHSDad and KinderNY, thanks for the lists! At least now we know who we (our kids) are, where those kids are going and when they are leaving.

I just found this cute ad on Bed, Bath and Beyond: [Shop for College | Dorm Room Decorating Ideas - Bed Bath & Beyond](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/bts01_survdormroomdecoratinghome.asp?) Starts off with a blank, gray, cell-like dorm room and give you four very different styling options along with their prices.

The kids attending Northeastern are all moving in on staggered dates over the holiday weekend - Sept 2, 3, and 4th.

I just received a text from D1 who is currently at orientation…it struck me as quite funny as I was reading through some of the recent posts about the kids that are excited about taking more advanced courses!

The text said…excited, just got out of calc for engineers, only need reg calc- GPA boost!

Her program is so rigid that most kids graduate with 129 credits but her program requires 145…she only has three electives during the entire program. So I think the first semester requires 19 or 20 credits…they literally hand them their schedule for the next 4 years.

kathiep^^if only dorm rooms looked like that and had that much space…lol

can you say cinder blocks and linoleum floors? I chuckled at the one with stained wood floors…

on a different note, was at a local BBB yesterday and they weren’t even set up yet (nor did they have half the merchandise on their website)…don’t they know we need to get this stuff done yesterday?? hahaha jk…

If you guys haven’t done it yet, you may want to call the BBB you might be visiting so you don’t waste a trip…

also, check out The Container Store…they are usually more expensive but they are offering 20% off on their “college nights”…and they also now do “store at the location of your college”…

@ rodney - Thanks for the heads up on the container store college night! I have my eye on a three drawer cart to go under Bluejr’s bed (we can lift it 2 - 2.5’) but it’s not inexpensive. Even a 20% discount would take a bite out!

FLMathMom: 7s on Physics HL, Futher Math and Math HL. WOW! Feel free to brag!

MM: fire ants? Oh, no – that’s one I hadn’t anticipated.

Shawbridge: have you read “Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi” by Geoff Dyer? First half of the book is set against the Biennale, incredibly atmospheric

Anialways: our school has the same situation with IB students who’ve applied to US schools – they figure it’s the ‘predicted’ grades that count since by the time the IB scores come out, US college acceptances are already in hand. The kids applying to uni here in the UK are in a totally different situation as they will lose their university places if they dont’ get the grades their offer is contingent on. I can well understand how your D with an ED acceptance would relax.

Thanks to the posters who’ve been so welcoming to us international parents. I have to say, I feel I’m operating from a whole separate level of ignorance but am finding the advice here priceless. I spent ages wondering why BB&B sells duvet covers but no duvets. I think I’ve figured out that it’s comforters that you put into duvet covers. And a very nice customer service person at Laytners (which I’d never heard of until weetabixmum mentioned it) kindly told me that I wouldn’t find a US cover to fit S’s 140cm x 200 cm duvet. H is taking him to move-in but I’m going to try to make it to the Parent’s Weekend which is early November.

blue: there is one that just went on sale for $20 but it looks feminine; I know the one you are referring to; I think Target carries it as well (not much cheaper though)…let me know if you can’t find it

Samuck–yep, we have different sizes. Many of our comforters have the cover sewn on and then mostly here you see down and down alternative duvets to go in the covers, although not sure they use the term duvet except for the cover–go figure. I have several european duvets and the covers are dying–I can’t find replacement sizes here. Guess I need to shop online from a european store if I could figure out which one to use.

MM–fireants are terrible. Watch for blistering of the bites–they can be nasty.

BI-Tysons Corner Container Store’s college night is July 24th at 6:30pm! (See you there!)

It’s my DS1’s 18th birthday today! I’ve done the 18 for 18 which includes lots of little stuff (scissors, highlighters, etc for school) up to his comforter/sheet set and a cool chair I found at target–sorta like a papasan (sp?) round chair on metal frame that folds flat to store against the wall or under the bed! Hope he likes it. I’m off to type up little notes for each gift talking about some things that happened each year of his life. I’m terrible at putting photos in scrapbooks and such, so words will have to do for now!

Hard to believe it’s less than two months for most college start dates!

kathie - thanks for the heads up on the BBB site. They even have one is blue for my child. Personally I’d go for the cheetah.

samuck and other int’l parents - ask away. I’m sure lots of this stuff is foreign to you. You’ll have your chance to teach us when our kids go abroad.

Anyone see Zits today? Perfect!

Happy 18th VASon

Any good 18 for 18 ideas for a boy who will be turning 18 three weeks after move-in at college? I plan to mail the package, so huge things are less optimal, and also I can’t really save school supplies that he’ll need before his birthday to include in the 18.

^^I thought of something yesterday (for guys and girls actually); gift cards to restaurants local to their colleges…

“While we haven’t heard for a bit from our UC family, let’s call Monday 9/19 the day we pop the cork. OK with everyone (not like we need a vote or anything…)”

I’m going to pop the cork on 29 Aug but I’m certainly willing to drink on the 19th, too. :)

Thanks rodney, that’s a great idea :)

samuck, I have read Death in Venice (for freshman lit). Will try to get your suggestion. Spent a second day at the Biennale. The artist in the Israeli exhibit was spectacular. The Canadian exhibit painfully disappointing. Lots of interesting stuff, but the Biennale seems to be about concept art more than visual art.

rodney, ShawSon was given a gift certificate to a restaurant one block off campus his freshman year and didn’t know where the restaurant was at the end of freshman year. Now, if they’d delivered, that might have been different. Now that he has a girlfriend, he may know a few of the local restaurants, but only if they are cheap. But, some kids may never get off campus (in his case, surprising since the college is small and the town is a college town).

Happy, Happy Birthday to VAson!! :)

VAMom, I’ll let you know if we’re going to make the Container Store night on the 24th. I saw the date and cringed. We will be headed back from the shore that day but may make it in time. We haven’t had a family vacation in a couple of years for a number of reasons and decided with the kids getting older we really wanted to try. We’ll be coming from the opposite direction of course, lol!

AP scores by mail arrived in Ca this morning. Glad the wait for that is over! Hopefully they will arrive in other regions soon.

Samuck, you might be able to find a duvet cover that fits at Ikea - [Duvet Covers & Bedding Sets - IKEA](<a href=“Bedroom Furniture - IKEA”>Quilt Covers & Duvet Cover Sets - IKEA)
