Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Popping in for a quick hello, and so you’ll know I did not fall off the planet! Just crazy, crazy busy with lots of biz-travel and too much stuff going on (but all good).

Breaking my own (ocd) rule of posting without catching up on many pages of back-posts, but will do that over the weekend.

For now…all is well here, I really miss being in touch with you guys and will be back soon.

PS…Oklahoma! absolutely rocked and sb was in terrific voice. Laurey was a perfect part for her, she was a perfect actress for Laurey, the stars aligned health/allergy-wise, and I loved every single minute of all 4 performances. Thanks to all of you who were sending good thoughts, wishes, and prayers our way for her voice when it was dicey. That sure was a comfort to me!

Hate not knowing what’s going on with all of you, but you’re in my thoughts and will catch up soon!

mathmomvt, thanks for the novelty bandaid pointer. I’m on the hunt for amusing things for D2’s camp care packages. Though D2 is in the doghouse right now, since she apparently snarfed up a whole bunch of D1’s clothing that D1 needs for her DC trip. I swear, the next time that either of them packs anything, I am going to implement a security screening system that is going to make TSA weep with envy.

EmmyBet, thanks for the idea of a slide and negative scanner. I had no idea that they existed for home use and seem to be quite reasonably priced. I’d love to get all our old negatives scanned before something bad happens to them.

SlitheyTove, I originally came across them when looking for things to send in care packages to all my S’s who are all at camp right now, but decided to save the novelty band aids for the 18 for 18 thing.

My boys cannot wear one another’s clothes (all very different in size at 17, 15 (awaiting his growth spurt) and 10) so we don’t have issues of unauthorized “sharing”.

Hey FLMathMom Congratulations, that is indeed a great score. Really happy for you and your son.

My D also got her scores yesterday. She is quite disappointed with hers. But this is partly what happens when one gets ED acceptance in mid Feb and one has to write their exams in May. But we are hoping she learns from this and takes life more seriously and becomes more self-diciplined. As long as there is realisation there is hope.

Also living in India is different in many ways. for one D did not have chores assigned apart from the usual of making her own bed, throwing clothes in the laundry basket and trying to keep her room decent for other people to walk in and not get embarrased. But have been after her to learn to do the laundry, iron, loading the dishwasher and some basic cooking.

I am hoping and praying that she will manage her time and be more organised once she is on her own. Also teacing her to use credit card as she is not 18 yet and did not have to manage her finances at all till now. Since we are in different time zones (10 1/2 hours ahead) so her bedtime will be our wakeup time and so i am guessing it will be easier to catch her during her bedtime and catch up on her day’s routine and goof-ups.

Making a list of essentials that she needs to take from home and a shopping list when we get there. Just waiting for dorm and roommate confirmation, it is due anytime. I do hope she gets her preference for both. She is already friends with her prospective roommate so it will be little less stressful to begin with. I am sure there will be ot of adjustment required from both parties.

Also the I-20 is in the mail and so will be applying for student visa next week. Also few shots are pending as per medical requirements for international students. So busy times ahead.

Emmybet, ShawDad, Ohiostarfish - thanks for the recommendation of a slide scanner. That was my original plan. I was hoping for an easier way. Since there literally are thousands of them, there is no way I can send them out to be done. Maybe I can hire a HS kid to help me. Community service??

OWM - kids had an ID and password to get the scores online. Good luck.

Anialways - DS’s school does an amazing job preparing kids for the exams. I cannot imagine going thru college process from India. My hat is off to you.

I think we East Coasters were counting on you West Coasters to post this. I was in bed at post 300! Anyhooo, Here we go. We’re missing some people though. Here’s the info from this thread:

My d’s move in date at Tulane is Aug. 27. She is in the honors program, so signed up for classes during her honors weekend in March. She didn’t go to any orientations, we just couldn’t afford for her to go to honors weekend and orientation, plus paying travel to get there in Aug. So, she doesn’t have her ID yet and will need to figure that out before moving in on that Saturday.

I had been hoarding my vacation time at work so I would have a week to drive her down there for move in. It is a 16+ hour drive one way. Then, she decided she wanted to fly and ship her stuff. So, I used some paid time off around her HS graduation. Then after I used that, she decided she wanted to drive down and I no longer had enough paid time off to do that. My 20 yo niece has come through and offered to drive my d down. Freshmen are not allowed to have cars, otherwise she could drive herself.

I feel kind of funny not helping her move in, but it is probably for the best for family relations if she does this on her own. My h would have had to stay home with our s, who would have already started 8th grade at that point. It would have caused friction if I went and he didn’t (though I am the one with paid time off and the one that’s never been there, he has, so in my mind it made sense for me to be the one to take her).

Hopefully we can plan a trip over Thanksgiving or spring break where we can all go so my son and I can see where d is going to school. S has Wed. before Thanksgiving off school, so it makes for a long enough weekend especially if we can afford to fly.

Thanks for the lists, folks. It will be easy to remember that they’re all around post 300, and at least on my computer, pages 20-21.

Bajamm - I can sense your disappointment and frustration. We all want to have a real look at the life our kids are leading, and that becomes very difficult when they are far away. I know my D1, who barely ever asks for anything, would have liked us to come “see her life” more often when she was in college 1000 miles away, but with a younger sister at home and with her dad’s also very demanding work schedule, she didn’t get that too much. D2 may fare better because now we’re empty-nesters and H’s job has shifted some. It’s just one of those not-so-fair things. Also, D2 got a scholarship, so finances aren’t so tight.

It is hard to send your first child to college and have this kind of reality check that there isn’t much you’re going to know first-hand about their life. I was fortunate that I did most of the college visiting, but H didn’t even see half - he’s been very patient and trusting that the school she’s going to that he’s never seen really is a great place. FB was really helpful to us, about halfway through D1’s college, because we finally knew what these mythical “best friends” looked like and could get their names straight. It is a jarring transition, but I guess it always has been so, as long as people traveled far to go to school. Thirty years ago, my mother put me on an airplane, 2 weeks into my having mono, and that was that for her. I know for a fact that she cried all the way home.

As for the sibling getting a chance to see big sister at school - that’s very nice if it can happen, but I wouldn’t put it as high a priority as your getting out there. D2 saw D1 just a little at her college (once in 9th grade when I sent her to see grandparents and she spent a half-day there, and once again in 11th grade when we all went, touring colleges for her this time). She had to miss D1’s graduation this spring because being a senior herself she had too much happening that weekend and couldn’t miss even one day of school. Although they’re pretty close they don’t seem to mind that they really didn’t “share” D1’s college experience. Again, just a matter of the distance.

I think families that are used to college being close by do find this a strange contrast. All of the new ways to communicate are really helpful, and I hope you can get a good system going with that. I also hope you can find a cheap weekend flight for yourself to visit early in the fall - it really sounds like you could use that to ease your mind. Thanksgiving travel can be really hairy and costly. It sounds like you’d like at least a once-over of the campus, and you’ll feel a lot better. I know my H feels much the same way and is relieved that he can go on the move-in trip.

bajamm, I know just how you feel. We had a similar timing problem with my daughter, our oldest child. She had to move herself in and fly by herself as her college was 16/17 hours from us too. We were able to mail out most things and they were waiting for her in their mail room when she got there but she had to shlep it all across campus. Fortunately, there were so many other parents and helpful students that she really didn’t do it alone. I think I actually felt worse about it then she did! My husband didn’t see her college until Parents weekend and didn’t see our older son’s until we moved him in.

Well D had a very unpleasant surprise at orientation. She came back from official activities yesterday and was talking with me on her cellphone as she was walking and going to her room. Imagine my horror when she starts telling me she is being bitten by fire ants. THey have swarmed her room. So I told her to leave and go to the bathroom and wash the bite off. They are in the bathroom too. So I had to keep insisting she take her medicine (she has low blood pressure and was due for more medicine and I didn’t want her to faint amidst the fire ants) and go find an adult in charge- RA, desk clerk, whoever. She did and they moved her to another floor and another suite. Then the swelling went way down. THis morning it was big again. I old her to find some benadryl and take it. SHe is supposed to be registered this morning, then eat lunch, take the shuttle, and fly home, landing at 11:30pm. Let’s just say we will be bringing ant spray with us when she moves in and I will also be calling housing and telling them they need to have spraying done. Another parent here on CC told me that her d had a similar problem at orientation. At least, she will be in another dorm.

Oh, gosh, MMom - hugs to your D. Not what you needed!

Got curious and checked: UChicago’s move-in day is Sunday, 9/18. While we haven’t heard for a bit from our UC family, let’s call Monday 9/19 the day we pop the cork. OK with everyone (not like we need a vote or anything…)? I guess I’m kind of fond of deadlines, or at least flagged dates.

Kindeny
Must say great job of putting the list together. looks like lot of work…

Militarymom hope your D is OK now. I can imagine how worrying this would be for you and am glad she is going to be back home and can be well prepared for this sort of thing when she goes back. Take care.

Ugh MM, that’s an awful way to start her college career! Hope she isn’t too discouraged, and I sure hope that housing gets the infestation under control before school starts!

MM - those fire ants are real nasty. Thanks for the warning. Just added bug spray to the list. Already had benadryl lotion and medicine on the list. My son blows up really badly from any type of bite. Bug bite near his eye when he was a toddler almost had nursery school calling the authorities on us for suspected child abuse.

Thanks for all the great lists. Very helpful.

Bluejr got his dorm assignment and roommate information. He’s pleased with the dorm assignment. Interesting that some of the kids are complaining about being in the same dorm. I guess it’s all perspective (and being a boy perhaps?). His university does all first-year assignments randomly (unless you jointly request roommates), which I think is good, so there is lots of anticipation. His is an older dorm with no a/c and quite small, but it’s very centrally located. He was just pleased that he was placed in one of the two main first year areas, and not in a triple simply because they tend to get reassigned. His roommate is OOS and a totally different major which he is really excited about both. He doesn’t want to assume anything but has already extended an offer to visit our house on weekends to get away since we are an easy drive and the roommate is clearly not. They don’t have to be ‘BFF’s’ but they seem to be making an effort to be quite friendly.

We had a long awaited appt with Bluejr’s surgeon yesterday. Everything went exceptionally well and a second surgery is planned for winter break. This will be a much easier recovery then the first three years ago. There had been a bit of a glitch when he dropped our insurance after the initial surgery. We’ve been paying out of pocket for follow up care, holding our breath not quite sure what we’d do when the second surgery came. I literally cried when I found that they just picked our insurance back up. We are not talking a small amount of money here. You do what you have to do for your child, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about it. We feel so exceptionally blessed to have access to good health care. We are by no means local, but Johns Hopkins is about as good as it gets and worth the trips.

Thanks for all the info on AP scores folks. D met a few friends, one of whom had called for scores since she’s headed out for orientation next week as well. Guess once her friend said the same thing, it made more sense. What does mom know about all this anyway??

She did call last night and got her scores. Very very pleased with them. She now knows that the Math course she was planning on taking would be far too easy for her (mostly a repeat) - so she has penciled in a higher level Calc class - Multi Variable Calc in the first semester. Does that sound like the right course for someone who has completed Calc BC successfully?

She paid her first credit card bill yesterday !! After paying it, she said she wasn’t sure if she did it right - it’s just transferring money, mom! Well, yes dear - but you need to make sure you do have money to transfer :)

MM - awful to hear about the fire ants. I know from experience they can be really painful. Hope she’s feeling better today.

Shaw - we loved Venice when we were there a few years ago. Thanks to a vaparetto strike, we ended up walking all around and loved the place. Kids (and I) loved the gelato places!! Thanks for the info on the backpack - D’s still leaning towards the North Face backpack - I wish I could find them somewhere nearby for her to try on. Will look…
