RHETORICAL QUESTION - I do not understand why the AP scores are sent out in dribs and drabs. I get the calling for an early score (anything to make $$) altho why don’t they just let you pay to access kit on the Internet. Would be much more cost efficient.

But why aren’t they all mailed the same day?

I heard it’s a volume thing. I think they have about half a million score reports to send out, so getting them all printed and sent on the same day would be something.

Hey Guys! Posted a few times on the old thread and can’t believe how quickly this thread is moving along. We live in the NW and I have 2 D’s. My oldest D attends college in WA and my youngest is going to be going to school in Boston. We will be helping her move in mid - August. I’ve been to Boston once a few years ago and I really don’t have a clue on where to stay or eat. Looking for suggestions for hotel and restaurants.

Greetings to our international posters, former lurkers, and old friends! It’s exciting to have so many new voices.

I’ve been a bit out of touch as my mom has been in the hospital for the past 2 weeks. She had difficulty breathing and they thought it was a heart problem, but it ended up being pneumonia. We’re hoping she’ll be discharged in the next couple of days, but it’s been a long haul. She lives about 3 hours away and I’m the closest of the offspring. I’ll be glad when she’s settled back in her familiar assisted living apartment. Whew! This sandwich generation thing is difficult!

As an introduction, I am a married mom of 4. This fall, our oldest son will be a senior at a small LAC about 2 hours from home. S2 will be a freshman at Duke, maybe majoring in neuroscience and Spanish. S3 will be a high school sophomore. D1 is 10, has some special needs, and is homeschooled. (Something I thought I’d never do…another case of never say never!)

BI: Hoping all goes well with your son’s surgery. Is it scheduled soon? I sooo understand your tears of joy when your son’s physician began accepting your health insurance again. That’s a huge relief!

D got an email from her school’s principal about her AP scores. It is obviously a cut and pasted Collegeboard electronic report! If schools get them sent electronically, why can’t the kids??? (He sent it along with a huge congratulations! With the exception of Physics, which was just okay, her scores were fantastic even with missing 11 of 18 school days in April visiting colleges and competing for scholarships.)

Southern Oregon’s move-in day for new students is September 22, with classes beginning September 26. S is sooooo ready to start school–but I’m secretly glad to have some extra time to enjoy his company before he goes.

Glad to find this thread…spent most of my CC time in my DD’s major and just recently started looking at the Parents section…mostly for packing ideas. Anyway, D will check in at Millikin University on Aug 16th as a BFA student in Theatre with a minor in Dance. The whole audition process was so very stressful that the approaching move in seems like a piece of cake. Ha. Mainly, it will be a bit of a culture shock for the D…going from Austin, TX to central Illinois. We don’t have seasons in Austin, we don’t know how to drive in ice and snow, or car maintenance for such temperatures. Millikin discourages freshmen from bringing cars so the D will leave her car behind…at least her first year.

Being a single mom I know it will be a terrible trip home after leaving my one and only with a group (albeit a lovely group) of strangers. I did find out that she can move in a night early for a $50 fee and I’m wondering if that might be a good idea. I have to fly out the day of her move in, so that leaves very little time to deal with “fitting everything in” issues. She has “met” her roomie on FB, but the roomie is out of the country for a while longer, so they haven’t had time to discuss room issues yet. I was hoping she might be coming to Decatur a few days ahead of moving so I could meet her parents, do some mutual shopping, etc. But maybe that’s a bit too idealistic? Anyway, glad to find more folks going thru the same process!

Thank you for the empathy. I am just waiting for my young adult a become a mature adult. But I guess parents will worry if it is not the academics it will be something else. That is what we were born for. On second thoughts worry is a strong word i think we just want to look out for them. hmmm… as long as they learn on the way and are happy and may i dare to add successful with the choices they make…

Tessa, I know Cambridge and Boston very well. Have lived there for grad school and almost all of adult life. You can stay in Cambridge if your child is going to Harvard, MIT or Lesley, or Boston if BU, BC, or many other schools but both Boston and Cambridge are challenging for driving. There’s a question of budget (e.g., the Charles Hotel in Cambridge is very nice and in Harvard Square but tends to be expensive). You can also stay in Waltham (cheaper hotels with free parking). Other than moving stuff in and out, you can take the T in to the city to walk around. Let me know where you are headed and your budget constraints (hotels in general in Boston area are expensive) and I can make some suggestions.

You may want to move her “stuff” in the day before but let her stay with you in the hotel that night. That way you have the littel time available to you on move in day to be with her and meet her room mate. It is likely that most of the dorm will be empty the night before and as an adult I would find that unsettling.

So we have to change AvonHDDad’s move in count down last date to the 22nd. While some of us won’t be as sorry as others to see our students off (spoiling the nest?) it is going to be a long haul for others that are dreading it. Here’s to seeing this through together. Our voyage on the SS Indecision while long and eventful, was made better by the company…

I am kinda coasting here at work until I have to change offices next week. It almost does not seem worthwhile to start anything, and of course I don’t have boxes to pack yet. Nor do I actually know when I am moving. Sigh.

Tessa - Check out the BeeHive in Boston. It is a funky restaurant that has live music every evening. It looks like a funky Parisian bistro/club and offers up all kinds of music from Brazillian guitar to New Orleans Jazz…[THE BEEHIVE :: BOSTON :: EATERY, BAR & LIVE MUSIC](http://www.beehiveboston.com)

Welcome Texblondie! I was going to make the same suggestion that Mamom did about moving your daughter’s stuff in the night before, but having her spend the night with you. That will give you more time to get her settled. If it turns out that the dorm is pretty full and she wants to sleep there the first night, you can always adjust the plans.

Ohiomom - Glad it was “just” pneumonia and hope your Mom has a speedy recovery! I am sure the stress of a 3 hr commute doesn’t help - or dealing with hospital staff. Thinking of you.

MOSB - Happy that songbird was able to go on with the show after the larygitis issues. What a performer!!

Texblondie - Don’t worry about the long ride home…we will all be in those shoes (more or less) and you can vent here!!! I am sure after a few hours of crying in the car, my dh will say something stupid and I can just go right over to being ****ed at him. We don’t travel well together. Actually, when I mentioned ds’ move-in date, he was like “why can’t they make it over the weekend?” “Do I have to take off work??!” “Can’t you drive back the same day?” (it’s a 6 hr drive one way!) I will probably be driving ds out by myself afterall.

TessaR - our son is going to school in Needham (just west of Boston). We spent 5 days in Boston during Spring Break junior year. We stayed at a fantastic small hotel in Waltham ([Hotel in Waltham, MA | Affordable Rooms - Modern Amenities - Relaxing Atmosphere | Crescent Suites Massachusetts](http://www.crescentsuiteshotel.com/)). I prefer B&Bs or small hotels to chains. The rooms were immaculate, had kitchens, separate LR & BR, free parking. Owner even gave my son a jacket someone left behind.

When we went to Boston on vacation five years ago, we stayed at Jurys right on the T line. Got great price on Internet.

Suggestion - we got a Fast Pass in advance which made dealing with the tolls so much easier. We were there during the floods. Driving at night in heavy downpours with terribly marked highways made for LOTS of u-turns and on-offs on the Mass Turnpike. If we had to find change each time on top of that…EEK!
