Is anyone out there on “career break” trying to break back into the world of finance in NYC? If so, PM me. There is a “returnship” - like internship for finance people that I know about (because I was not selected) that runs from Sept-Nov at a top IB. You have to be out of work/break taking care of kids, family for at least 2 yrs.

2Education–thanks for the Amtrak info. I found out they had a 4 year option so I jumped on that. Also got the EZ pass ordered so we should be set for driving to move-in.

They provide a list (for some schools only) of what is allowed at the school. Go to the college section, then click “find your school”. If they have list like above there will be a link just above the list of BBB’s local to your school. I thought it would be especially helpful for our international parents. Unfortunately not all schools have the nifty list.

I’m in for the gathering. We can even pitch tents on Kinderny’s lawn if need be! NYC sounds like a great option too! I’ve only been to upstate NY once, but remember how beautiful it was.

OWM or anyone else in the know, I.'m curious about how frats work. You said your son’s roommates are changing because several were joining frats. I have no idea how this works. Do they pledge during the summer and get in before school starts? I was under the impression that rushing happened during the first year. Realize I have absolutely no knowledge of greek life at all! Thanks!

Mommylaw prayers definitely being said here for the family and your D.

2education, when we moved D into her uni here in the UK, I could not believe all the kids with their ironing boards and irons. She was definitely in the minority, not having one. I am in awe of teens like your S who can iron I didnt started until I was in my 20s and had a real job for which my usual crumpled look just wouldnt do.

AvonHSDad youre a grandfather?! I never would have guessed, you look so young! Congrats on your happy news.

Kathiep, thank you for the Ikea suggestion. It doesnt work though here we have three categories of bedding: UK, Euro and Ikea. Ikea seems to be in its own separate universe when it comes to sizing. Im also beginning to think the whole duvet and comforter concept differs radically on different sides of the Atlantic.I believe a comforter (a bedspread?) drapes over the sides of the bed but a duvet (as used here) sits on top of the bed (no top sheet needed) so when you get hot at night, you stick your leg out and cool down. Very effective.

Harry Potter movie : we had the premiere here Thursday. Kids camped for three nights in Leicester Square and its been cold and rainy no tents allowed! SamSon had a couple of friend who went up to London that day just to join in the festival atmosphere ( all girls, dressed as Hermione ).

And finally, apologies for reopening the alcohol discussion (although I think were all in accord that education is the answer) but I wondered whether the requirement to complete an online alcohol-wise program is the norm? SamSon was required to do this by a mid-July deadline no ID or key until hed done it. It took quite a lot of time and he says he found it useful. The first go round, he got a 40% on the test but mostly (he assures me) because he was unfamiliar with terms like BAC. Second time he got a 90%. He said though he would have appreciated more info on the law. Drinking before youre 21 is ILLEGAL in the US, I told him, what more info do you need?! But he said the assumption seemed to be that students would drink and he was curious what the penalty would be.

Yes, I think policies on alcohol vary widely from school to school. Best bet is to search the school website. I’m guessing many schools will also have information sessions required during orientation or 1st week of school. Law is that it is illegal until 21.

samuck - I’ll try to help with the bedding lingo. There is a comforter, a duvet insert and a duvet cover; however, many people say just duvet for either or both.

A comforter is generally used on its own. It is decorative, but you keep it on to sleep. Many people use top sheets under it to try to keep it clean (so your body doesn’t touch).

A duvet insert goes inside a duvet cover which in effect mimics a comforter. Advantages - Duvet inserts come in different weights so you can use lightweight in spring and heavyweight in winter. It is also easier to wash a duvet cover than a comforter.

That being said, if you have an ugly comforter, you can buy a duvet cover to put it into so you can’t see it.

If is often difficult to keep the duvet insert from moving around in the duvet cover. I brought mine to my seamstress who put a zipper on the inside. Keeps it tidy yet I can clean the cover by unzipping it.

We just returned from the beach recharged and ready.

D will be leaving Friday for a “work” weekend at UGA so this is precursor to the real move in a few more weeks.

I never did my intro for the new posters:

We live in Metro Atlanta and I am mom to three Ds: D1 -UGA Class of 2015. D2- HS Class of 2015 and D3- HS Class of 2018. I will be around on CC for quite a few more years.

Avon: Congratulations on the new grandson. Are you and I the only grandparents in this thread? We had ours for the evening last night. Such a joy!

VaMom: the policies for fraternity move-in vary from campus to campus. It depends on if the fraternities have houses and what the school’s policies are.

At Mizzou, the fraternities have a summer recruitment, informal away from campus (in St. Louis, Kansas City, other towns) and formal a few weeks ago in Columbia. If a boy receives a bid, he usually moves into the fraternity house (and has to break his dorm contract.) Often the Res. Life office will waive the cancellation fee if they need the rooms. I’m going to guess the waived the fee this year because many students do not have dorm room assignments yet.

Sorority recruitment is usually very different. It begins a week before school. Members don’t live in the house until their sophomore year. And sometimes not even until junior year. Mizzou’s sororities now have over 200 members and most of the houses only hold 60 members approximately. So you can see that only one “class” of members can live in the house at one time. By contrast, the largest fraternity is about 100 men.

You should go to the school’s website, search for Greek Life, and then look for housing information because it varies so widely from school to school.

Thank you, FlMathmom! Here, a duvet goes inside a duvet cover. Thats it. And yes VAMom2015, my mantra to son is its illegal until youre 21, so dont drink. Here, his latest favourite tipple is a Swedish elderflower cider. Im guessing this isnt going to be easy to come by in Bronxville…

Nope, I’ve got six grandkids from two months to 14 years old - four girls and two boys from my DH’s three beautiful daughters. Unfortunately they all live in Israel so we only get to babysit when we visit.

Hello folks…ok so if you (and other parents) are furnishing a common room for your student (and roommates)
Where are you looking for furniture? etc

I ak researcing online since we are flying and have to buy locally.

fog~I would reverse the process and look for the sores available around Yale and then make a selection from their stock items. You are going to have to rent or share a rental with someone.
FYI, some of those all dorms need a thorough cleaning before starting to put furniture down. ;)
