Minny^ That is hilarious!

just went to see HP with my H. Seems fitting that the last movie came out right before D heads to college. So much of her childhood was wrapped up with reading the books and seeing the movies. One year we had a HP themed birthday party complete with a quidditch game (designed by dh YEARS before they started teams on college campuses!)

hollisue, I also designed a quidditch game for one of S’s birthday parties, long before it was “in vogue”. I’m pretty sure we had more than one HP-themed party through the years ;-)

LOL–too funny. I could see myself doing same. Luckily DS school doesn’t use quarters!

DS finally got his dorm assignment and he’s happy. He is in a quad with a common area. He’s in one of the older/traditional dorms and the FB group is already deciding which res colleges correlate with which HP houses. It’s pretty entertaining. DS’s is truly HPish with the wood paneling, gothic architecture, etc. Hopefully it will lead to a magical first year at college! :)

holliesue and mathmomvt, we also had a HP birthday party here years ago complete with “sorting hat”, levitation practice, quidditch, and other games. what a surprise that all the Houses ended up in a tie.

Glad it was a fairly slow day in CC land as I just had the opportunity to sign on. I’ve been booking hotel rooms all day for our trip from FL to Boston and back (3 weeks total with lots of stops). Since we need an ADA room with a roll-in shower, each reservation requires a phone call to be sure that their accessible room meets our needs.

I do have a question for my CT/Mass friends. How would you recommend going from New Haven to Boston?

I found an amazing hotel in the Tanglewood area ([Blantyre - luxury country house hotel](Blantyre)) Unfortunately the rates quoted are for a NIGHT not a week. I never knew hotels could be so expensive.

I usually go 91 to 84 to 90. I have also done just 95 but there always seems to be construction on 95 in the summer. I suggest you see if any construction is gong on and try to avoid Hardford at rush hour.

S also had a HP bday party once. I know we played quidditch, and a HP version of jeopardy, sorting hat, can’t remember what else.

Good morning everyone! Found this thread this morning while drinking my coffee and planning my day. Is a new face welcome here? Four weeks yesterday until we leave to drive our DS to Notre Dame. Looking for some support to get through the next month(it is our first one off to college).

welcome loveneweng! S has a classmate from Boston area going to ND also.

All are welcome! Feel free to join right in.

Chhhhhanges going on here which is why I have been quiet. Mostly not so welcome but all part of life/survivable, so no worries. D, H and I are all fine.
Cheers to all.

^it’s an unsettled summer. A summer of change. Glad to see you again (and I still hate your D’s school).

Good morning all,

loveneweng~Welcome to the thread Better late than never :p.
Congratulations on ND, It is a wonderful school, quite a few of S2’s will be '15 as well!

Kinder~Sending {{Hugs}} your way :D

Have a great Day everyone

**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th. (Excludes cadet training at West Point)
Move-in day in 21 days.

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 65 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

Welcome to loveneweng and any other new posters that I have missed.

kinderny - hope all is ok and do you still hate that darn school?

Thanks.

School, what school? ;)

ETA: we finally got D’s transcript. The college classes (3 different institutions) she did on her own over 4 years were all in the mid to high 90s, with the exception as a 9th grader she got an 85 in college French 3. The classes with group projects she took at her school all at least 10 points lower. What is wrong with this picture?

DD and I braved the container store’s college night last night. Picked up a few things and then stopped off at IKEA and picked up a few more. We decided the things that are left she needs to shop for with roommate since they will want to decide on those things together. Its mostly bathroom stuff, curtains, etc. She was lucky enough to get in the dorm that has its own bathroom. I think we are done for the most part with dorm shopping!!!

D came back Sunday from her “work” weekend for cheer. She was totally exhausted and went straight to bed. Woke up a few hours later just in time to head out to container store. She said she wasn’t tired from being out of shape, her body was just plain worn out. It’s going to be interesting to see how things work the first week of school with cheer practice and classes.

Welcome, Loveneweng! Glad you are here.

Kinder: good luck with the changes. That is always unsettling.

We are trying to settle into a lazy summer, but clearly do not have the skills for this since graduation was 9 June and we are still thrashing. I have to keep reminding myself that we intentionally under scheduled this summer and that boredom (meaning no television, no computer beyond what an Iphone can do) was part of the plan, but for kids - and for me! - who have always had projects, programs, etc., it is a tough adjustment. Still, I think everyone will be well rested for fall and ready to start new things.

Welcome to the all new faces!

Pepper – Have a wonderful vacation on the beach.

Fogfog – thanks for the recipe. I might try it this week.
Re: 18 for 18 ideas – My S is not a coffee drinker either, but loves Starbuck’s tea. Another ideas – usb drive(s) and laptop sleeve, but you need to know the size of the laptop for this one.

Idinct – Congrats to your son on getting the sophomore standing at his college. Not bad!

My S’s bday is the first day of classes. I am hopping that I will get familiar with the area around the campus during the orientation to figure out what present(s) will be appreciated. I liked the idea of the gas card. Thanks FLMathmom!

He signed up for classes, but it’s his Plan B schedule. He is hopping to take a class that requires professor’s permission for a freshman to attend and will meet with the professor during the orientation and change one of the classes if the permission is granted. So he won’t know his final schedule until a week before classes start. Makes it’s tricky to buy the text books, too.

DH & I drove our 10yo DD to a 3 week summer camp this weekend. The camp is on a college campus about 7 hrs drive from home, so we stayed overnight in a hotel close to the site. With the change of the scenery and a lot of things going on, the weekend felt longer than usual. Almost like a small vacation. :)

Welcome loveneweng! (I do, too). Thirty years ago I went from my home in MA to college in Chicago. I can appreciate the cultural shift! Both of my kids are doing it in reverse.

keylimepie - I thought of you this weekend as we made our pies for D’s party. Everything went fine, but it was smaller and quieter because of the horrendous heat.

Back to play-reading and clothes-sorting. D is also falling prey to the TV/computer habit. We did plan a “quiet” summer deliberately, but lots of time is getting sucked up. She says she’s going to handle her life and get things done, and I’m going to let her, within reason. She’s pleasant to be with, has normal sleep habits, and hardly spends any money, so I don’t want to step in yet.

Morning all. Hugs to Kinder; happy vacation to Pepper!

North Face on sale at my local Nordstrom Rack! Also bought some cool rain boots over the weekend. Bit by bit, D is getting organized.

I cancelled D’s gym membership (need to give 4 weeks notice). I got in my car to drive home and burst into tears. Oh boy, this may be harder than I thought…

Welcome new friends!

All of you “Naked Roommate” fans - D just told me the senior class at her college gave a copy to all of the freshmen. Isn’t that cute?
