Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Regarding computer cards - always numbered mine due to droppage. The worst part about COBOL as it was so boring. Did punch cards for FORTRAN too. Started college to be a secretary…joined USAF and was a dental lab tech (made dentures, crown & bridge work, etc). The lab work is what convinced me to turn to computers LOL.

I realize this is an old topic, but AP scores finally arrived here (we are in Maine so had to wait for DH to bring them up from Boston). D is devastated; I guess the number 4 does not compute. I am getting to the point that I think she will be better off at the U soonest. It is too hot to deal with a child who can melt down about 2 4’s and a 5 on BC Calc and the two parts of Physics C, especially when that still qualifies her for potential credit from the U and she has to take their tests for placement anyway. Oh, yes, and she lost a Pocket button from her new shorts and has not eaten anything today because she is fat. Anybody want to trade for a son - I’ll happily do all the shopping by myself?

hugs to you HighHead…yes thats what we think–the placement tests will make a dertermination–that plus, SAT2s, transcripts etc…They already filled out that math/science survey too…

fwiw
Well when I went to college…I took my typewriter - a smith corona, a foot locker, bed sheets and towels (2 sets), desk lamp, my stereo (turntable, cassette deck and huge speakers, and tuner) etc

and yes those punch cards were a royal PITA…
How about the "modem–you called the modem and put the phone into the rubber cups on the cradle.

Met your roommate when you moved in.
ATMs were a big deal and it was the height of technology to use an ATm
Wrote checks at the bookstore.
Used quarters for the laundrey.

Dorm was updated in that instead of a hall phone, we had a phone in each room!!

My parents got a grade report within 10 days of the close of the semester…

amanda: there is a kayak at my mother’s cottage. Find your way there!

fogfog: we are from the same era. My stereo system had 8 track tapes. We got phones in our rooms after Christmas break my freshman year. And to register for classes, we worked out a plan on paper from a tabloid list of classes, went to the un-air-conditioned field house where each department had a table. You picked up a punch card for the class you wanted from that department, then looked for the next table. If the only cards available had time conflicts, you went back to exchange from each department. Took hours and hours. Then you stood in line with your punch cards in order to be read in the card reader.

DS2 hates shopping. So I have to do the college shopping in small trips to the mall. Today we needed some stuff for the trip at Target. Picked up an extra set of sheets and 30 hangars while we were there. That was all he could handle in one trip.

I got into programming right after punch cards were gone so I missed out on that luxury. But I did have to take FORTRAN in college. Do they even offer that anymore? I remember dialing up via modem and the screen came up line by line.

The one phone at the end of the hall…there were a few people who were “special” and paid to get phones installed in their room.

D went out on her own to do some college shopping but realized her car was too small for a fridge and I had to bring my car…but at least she is taking on some of the responsiblity on her own.

Can’t believe we are almost 2 weeks away from her moving in. I have a feeling the next 2 weeks are going to fly by.

OWM

You are right–scheduling with punch cards…
ahhh the joys of drop/add…

fogfog: thx. Exactly.

When I went to college, I took my electric typewriter and my “stereo system” (turntable, receiver, two giant speakers). It was brand new from summer job money, so I didn’t know I needed to buy ‘stereo wire’ and was rescued by a guy fro Woodstock NY who later became a Rhodes Scholar.

We had a phone in the quad and agonized monthly over splitting up the bill for long distance calls.

My freshman roommate was a sophomore transfer student who had lived at home her first year while attending Giant State Flagship. I was a product of Quaker Boarding School. Needless to say, we were coming from opposite ends of the map and at one point I actually put down masking tape across the floor to divide the room. Thirty-some years later, we are still friends.

I can’t speak to the computer issues; I was a Classics major and gave all my time in the computer center to friends.

High Head: Girls can be trying sometimes. Hang in there.

My freshman roomate was a horrible, obnoxious girl from Long Island. Fortunately, I found other friends on my hall, and spent a lot of time in their rooms. My sister, on the other hand, bonded immediately with her freshman roomate and they’re still friends.

I always remind kids that they don’t have to be best friends with their roommates. They just need to be considerate and try to live together in peace. My D1 had 2 suitemates freshman year, one of whom was an international student from China. They got along fine, but all found other close friends.

I am not a math person, despite having an upper level math teacher for a father. I was never more discouraged when I found out that I needed a calc class to graduate with a BA from my small LAC. I was never happier when I found out I could subsitute a BASIC programming class and get out of calculus. I took the BASIC class at CC and transferred it in. I am glad it must have been after punch cards.

At dinner, ShawSon was discussing friends and in particular, one of his friends, an inner-city kid who works three jobs and whose parents were having real financial problems (he thinks that they lost their house and are living with her grandparents). He organized a group that lent her money this fall (after asking me if he could use some of his money) so that she could pay for meal service as the money for that had not come through and the school was threatening to cut her off. When ShawWife asked about how his friend could work three jobs, he said that the jobs were a few hours a week each and that in general most kids do not chose to work as hard academically as he does. He said, “Most kids are not getting all A’s plus I’m taking hard courses.” [I had told him years ago that, because of his LD’s, he’d have to work harder than everyone else for the rest of his life, and he did/does seem to get it.] Given his LDs, his focus on academic success and our relative lack of need, I’m happy for him not to have a job.

One great thing about his school is that his friends range from inner-city kids to near royalty. We’re someplace in between so the range is good for him. Given the heat, we suggested that he invite a couple of friends who are working at the school this summer to drive the 1.5-2 hours it takes to get here and spend the weekend and air-conditioned comfort. They’ll be coming tomorrow AM.

OWM - your vacation sound wonderful…

Fogfog and HH - Ah the good ole days! I also brought lots of white out for the typewriter…and I too punched and dropped cards for Cobol…I just remember the whole college thing being simpler as compared to today…

To those that have been dorm shopping - I went to BBB today and picked up a few things…but I ended up getting very very plush towels at TJMax/HomeGoods for less than half the price than BBB.

Haven’t been on CC since June 26th…that’s how summer’s been, unfortunately not a bunch of big happy stuff around here, life has been challenging, but there’s been a few bright days in there.
D1 and I really haven’t been in the college prep mode AT ALL, she did get to the Dr but due to records mixup did not get shots so still not up to date, zero shopping for any supplies, linens, clothing etc etc.
oh well, methinks there will be a couple “home again” weekends in there or I’ll be doing a campus return trip which is fine…

collegemaw - welcome back. Wishing you brighter days ahead.

Shawbridge - sounds like you are raising children with good hearts which is way more important than good grades IMO. Enjoy your weekend.

I share the punch card experience with many of you. I also learned to number mine after the first drop! We also had these really awful bubble cards before we got to punch cards – each one could only hold 16 characters so it could take 5 for a line of code! We did a couple of odd assembly languages and Fortran (WATFIV) on the cards. I was in HS. The next year we got some Apples and did BASIC on them. Learned COBOL at school, edited on dumb terminals using vi, which my fingers still know  And I kind of miss that modem song  but couldn’t ever go back to that slow slow connection speed! Never did scheduling with punch cards though. I actually have no idea how we requested our classes.

I remember many hours spent in the basement computer lab typing up those punch cards. Does anyone remember the Christmas wreaths that people made with the old cards? The ends were folded and the whole thing was spray painted? Or is that just something an Girl Scout leader remembers? Thinking back, they were truly tacky.

D1 is home for a short weekend from her job at camp. She received her roommate info via email the other day and seems very excited with the dorm, even though the entire dorm (and most of the freshman dorms) are triples this year. Her dorm has larger rooms that were made for triples when it was built. She saw photos of the furniture and room set up online, and was happy. The furniture does look very nice, since the bed is lofted and the desk and dressers can all fit underneath. The school has already set up a FB page for the dorm, and one of her field hockey team mates will be her next door neighbor.

has to email her other roommates to determine the fridge/ microwave thing. Would it make sense to have more than one of each if there will be 3 girls in a room?

Hoping that the weather cools off a bit this morning, sicne we are spending a few hours outside watching a field hockey tournament.

just wondering how many people get the roommates parents contact info? Just in case your kid calls you with some information or emergency the other set of parents should know about?

I thought we’d exchange the parents contact info at move in (for emergencies only). I think it’s more likely that Bluejr will be contacting the roommates parents in an emergency so I’m going to ask the kids program in our info into their phones. If something happens to Bluejr his roommate won’t be able to open Bluejr’s phone and call us on speed dial…there is a fingerprint scan to open the phone.

**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th. (Excludes cadet training at West Point)
Move-in day in 16 days.

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 60 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

Wow, fingerprint scan? Sounds James Bond-like…and I thought my kids had all the high tech cool gadgetry.

My roommates never became my friends, maybe it was me, maybe it was them, maybe just the “type” of weird-ness my college attracted. My first roommate lasted 3 mo. - she spoke purely in middle english, believed in dragons and jousting and was a “faire maiden” of the local SCA. I am sure I was my own kind of scary to her. Ds is a different type of person, he will be friends with the entire campus by mid-semester I suspect. We’ll see how it goes. I won’t be at move-in, so I won’t meet the other parents either.

This list was cut and pasted from post #309 (all the way back on July 7th!) I added a couple of missing schools and dates that I was aware of but the list shoud be re-checked. If you have a correction, please cut and paste the entiire list and note your change at the top. As we get to Move-in Days on the countdown, I will start listing the schools a couple of days in advance. Thanks to all and stay cool as possible this weekend.
