**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th. (Excludes cadet training at West Point)
Move-in day in 13 days. Less than TWO weeks!

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 57 days.

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

FYI, Wisconsin is plenty hot in July. Hotter and more humid than MA in the summer; colder and drier than MA in the winter. Milwaukee’s weather is tempered a bit by Lake Michigan.

D has confessed that she has lots of notebooks, pens, paper stockpiled. Half of her classes really won’t involve taking notes, actually…

Maybe if people get together in NYC I can combine it with a trip to see D! I’ll watch for the dates you guys are considering.

capenn15- Does Penn have air conditioners in the dorms? I went to Drexel (many years ago), and all of our dorms had ac- and believe me, we needed it in Philly.

I took D shopping at Staples back in June. At first she said “Let’s wait to get notebooks and stuff until I get to school. I want to make sure I get the correct type.” I reminded her that she is in college now, and can pretty much pick out any type of notebook she wants, since does not require a lab notebook this term.

I have a corporate discount at Staples, which is great, but we never know the actual cost until we check out. Sometimes we can save 10% on an item, other similar items can have a savings of 60%. I have tried to figure out the logic on the discount, and just gave up.

gsmomma - He is in Hill so no A/C in room but in common areas. Will be taking a fan. Penn and Hill were his choice…most people say by end of Sept. they turn off A/C in all dorms. He will learn to adapt or sleep in common area.

We are still working out which computer to get…he has his eye on a Toshiba but I’m looking at ones at college that have onsite repair…hmmmmm

You are all welcome in London or Shanghai but Im telling you, it will be a squash in either flat! Im up for NYC as a meeting point as one big plus of the London base is that I can hop over to NY more easily than from China. Whew, weetabixmum, glad Im not the only one asking old friends to do some wash for me! Talk about imposing. I know Id do the same for them though which makes it easier to ask. As for school supplies, we have so many pencils/pens/markers/rulers/staplers etc here that I am packing up a box and slipping it into Ss gigantic suitcase to take with him. A number 2 pencil is a number 2 pencil…actual, its not. Here its an HB pencil (flashback to panic time pre-SATs…) Oh, and advice from the college is to bring a fan, a real fan, not a clip on. Yikes, seems like Shanghai isn’t the only hot place in August.

^ Re UPenn, our student is staying in Rodin right now. Nice rooms, kitchenette and AC. Only thing kiddo has noted is that it is very bright right now early in the ams

Fogfog: My daughter lived in Rodin last year! She got tired of the elevators, but had a
great view of the city.

Philly will be very warm for the first few weeks.

I would send kids with a least a small fan even if they have A/C. My daughter’s freshman dorm was blazing hot in the winter, so she used the fan a lot.

This belongs in the ‘Good buy of the day’ thread but I’m so thrilled I’m crowing here. Bluejr had originally been sold on the Nautica navy/green jersey comforter that several others here have liked. We were the ones that ended up deciding on a full sized comforter to cover some of the crud under the bed. I stink at a lot of things but I am a very persistent shopper. I had seen the brown and grey version in full sizes but only the navy on ebay at inflated prices. Today I went into BB&B in desperation. I asked if they could check any stores for availability. A WONDERFUL sales associate took over a hour to call stores and found it several states away, arranged for shipping to my home and informed me that the clearance price at the store it was shipping from was not $80 but $25!!! SCORE!! I could have kissed her! She was a recent college grad from the in-state rival to Bluejr’s school but thought it was sweet that a mom would go to such lengths to find a comforter for her son. Awwww!! And to think, I felt bad walking in that I didn’t have a coupon! :o

Staples and Office Depot generally have free shipping when you order IIRC $50 or more at a time. You can easily pump up the purchase to the $50 by tossing in an ink cartridge or two. One time I had to send something (a fan, now that I think of it) to one of my kids at camp. Best price was on Office Depot. I included some ink cartridges to get the free shipping. The staff supervise all package shipments to the campers, since sending food is a no-no. They must’ve really wondered about the ink. :)

Took D1 on a first recon visit to B^3. She wasn’t enthused. We need to do an IKEA trip, though that means lugging stuff cross-country. I’m buying her laptop tomorrow, since a local place is going to have the model she wants for $100 off, plus all the usual educational Apple goodies.

In other nice news, we learned that a longtime friend of mine lives within a couple miles of D1’s school. This is just excellent–they’re wonderful people, will provide a nearby safe harbor if needed, and can give D1 (and her parents) a nonacademic-eye view of the immediate area.

New subject: computer backups. What are y’all thinking of for your students? I don’t want to send a hard drive, since I figure that one form of hard drive failure is if the computer gets stolen and any sensible thief would also take the hard drive.

Call me stupid, but why would a sensible thief take the external hard drive? A number of thefts take place in public areas when you aren’t paying attention (library, common area, etc.) when someone walks with your bag. Your back up wouldn’t be there at that time. If someone comes into the dorm are they going to bother to feed through drawers and look for the external backup? It’s worth $75 new. I feel like I’m missing something.

Current plan is to use the external hard drive as a back up, in fact it’s required by the e’school. We’ll also encourage him to use another method for working doc’s (cloud/dropbox/email to self). I don’t care what it is as long as he uses it.

I was thinking external hard drive also. Stored separately from the computer most of the time should be safe enough. For schoolwork, a lot of kids say they email themselves the files as additional backup.

Back-ups - might want to check IT section of school’s web site. DS’s school backs up all computers every night. Their situation is unique b/c you MUST buy their computer which they supply w/software, maintain and replace if damaged. Other than paying for it we just have to insure in order to replace it if necessary. Students seem to feel it is a good system and teachers don’t have to worry about hw being eaten by the dog.

Thanks to BI I headed to staples and scored all the 1 cent deals and free pens. I also had a $10 coupon so I ended up with a pretty good deal when I walked out.

Slithey–You might be able to mail online orders to your friend and then pick it up when you get there to help with dorm stuff!

DS2 had a tooth pulled today. He has stubborn baby teeth that just won’t come out. It was #5 that had been pulled. New teeth start coming in over the babies that won’t leave. Friday he gets the last 2 yanked. Not a great day for him!

There are sleek high capacity external hard drives out there for under $100, like ohiomom24 said, for big backup jobs but I’m also packing D some cheap 4 and 8 GB flash drives for instant file backups. Staples has some nice looking ones by PNY. Also, D found that mailing files to an online account (like Yahoo) is good insurance in case something unfortunate happens to one’s main computer or one’s flash drive since one always knows how to get to Yahoo from any computer.

My conclusion…purchase an iPad2 w/3G next week, buy a new desktop in Nov-Dec and then set up current desktop for DH to use, keep pay-as-you-go phone for us (maybe add texting if DH will use; I can’t) altho we may get a new basic phone as part of DS’s new smart phone plan which he hasn’t picked out yet.
