Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

LaFalum84 - Thank you for this great reminder! I know that my DS will be one of those who thinks some of the activities are not his thing and roll his eyes! Make sure you tell your D thank you from the incoming class and parents…even though some may not show it! Hopefully there will be so many who do!

^^ I will share your post with DS so he shows the orientation leaders some respect. Thanks.

Re: move in – we have gone full circle, from me fondly planning to fly with D down to Atlanta and move her in @ Emory, to us totally not getting along and me strongly suggesting H would love to see Emory so why doesn’t he take her, to D deciding it makes more sense to fly than drive (H doesn’t fly and I don’t think either of them will cherish the 2-3 day trip in the car).

Phew! So stuff she bought at the local BB&B (thinking she’d be able to throw it in the car) will get returned and repurchased/held for her (us) at the BB&B in Atlanta.

The plan is: fly down; get rental car; drive straight to pick up stuff; go to hotel; have dinner and go to bed early; be @ the track for a 6:45 am fitness run with the team; help her move in; mom goes home; D goes to XC camp. No meeting the roommate (everyone else shows up 3 days later). No orientation events for mom (isn’t that why we pay tuition?)

I went on the Delta site to book the flight and automatically almost bought 2 round trips. Then I realized – this time, for her, it’s a one way ticket. Tears.

LAf~You are my hero what a thoughtful post. Your D is just one of a kind and you my dear are a wonderful mother and efriend  see you on the '14 :D

mommylaw - great deal.

I made the executive decision to rent the micro/fridge combo, which I think is about $175 for the year, I have to go back and check. S was offered a used fridge from his cousin, but we have no way to get it to his school and I don’t want to be bothered with storage over the summer, I expect the fridge would be the only thing S would need to store. We did see fridges and microwaves in Lowes in collegetown a few months ago. No idea if they will still have them during move in.

gsmomma - I always feel guilty about spending money on myself and only buy things when I absolutely need them and they are on sale. No way would I spend the kind of money I spend on the kids sneakers for myself.

S’s school requires for fridges: does not draw more than 3 amps [300 watts] to start and 1.5 amps while running – but most online listings do not have this info. Sigh. Anyone happen to know of an online source of this info? Thanks!

Hi everyone. (Big wave!!!) Missed everyone here and your recent posts about bed toppers and what-not brought me out of hiding. (Actually work work work mode) Hope you don’t mind me jumping right back in. :)

mommylaw, I bow down to your couponing/discounting victory. Under $10 for a quality comforter? Ay! I’m afraid when S and I walked into Macy’s, I was very taken with some new (read no discounts at all) sheets in twin XL. Lucky for us all that S is ultra picky about softness and these did not meet his standards. (!!!) Which, of course is a whole 'nother can of worms. So far, no sheets meet his standards. Ah, yes. Fun time. In addition (see topper notes below) we’ll need an XL Twin, extra soft (he does not like jersey!!!) with an extra deep pocket. I’m giving up on finding such a thing for a good price–but does anyone have even a high end suggestion?

As for the twin XL mattress pad, S is also picky about that item. He nixed the egg crate foam (can’t blame him) and also any kind of memory foam (he’s been there, done that, not for him). So he had been looking for a featherbed topper. There is a company called Pacific Coast Down that makes the toppers and pillows for super luxury resorts and he found a featherbed topper made by them at Costco.com. [Costco - Pacific Coast® Down on Top Feather Bed](http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?prodid=11377915&whse=bc&topnav=&cat=492&hierPath=492*&lang=en-US) It was under $70–a very good price for this sort of thing at this quality. However, it’s only a standard twin. I think it should be fine, but we’ll see. It arrived yesterday and is indeed like sleeping on a cloud. Will he be able to drag himself from that cloud for his 8 a.m. classes? Hm.

As for mini-fridges, I bought a very charming one at Costco 4 years ago–so excited to get S1’s dorm equipment started. Only, his school provided a mini-fridge/micro combo in every room. Duh… So I may have one stashed in its box in my garage. Anyone in the SoCal area want a great deal? lol.

mathmomvt, I agree with the idea of keeping it all simple (see above refrigerator blunder), and it’s kind of fun for the kid to decide what they need and make friends while finding kids to drive them to Target or whereever to solve their own problems. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself for S2. :)

Q regarding BBB. If we buy here for pickup at collegetown, we pay here right? I told H that everything would be prepaid and he would just be picking up. He will not be happy if he has to deal with coupons and paying.

Sorry to tell you that you pay at the pick up site. In our case I see it as a good thing because you may not like the way something looks upon seeing it, have changed your mind since the day you selected everything in your hometown, have since found out the roommate will be bringing something you ordered, etc. Good luck with your dh!

Just caught up on all I’ve missed these past few days. Am in costa rica for a week and we stayed in after dinner tonight and have wireless so I’m quite happily catching up on email and cc!

Sorry I don’t remember whos D is in CR working with turtles right now but we were able to go out one night and observe a green turtle lay eggs. Simply incredible. The weather IS pretty bad but I do hope your D is having a good experience.

I’m on my iPad right now and it is simply wonderful to travel with. A bit awkward to type on but for the light weight and user-friendliness, it’s an easy trade off. I’m really not a techie person but I agree with those who say it’s very easy to use. Go for it momjr!

Thanks for the backup in the cloud suggestions…something I’ve been meaning to research and now it’s fallen in my lap!

My D likes jersey sheets and the ones from target worked well for d1 so, once d2picked her comforter and I knew what color would match, I bought hers from target also. I’ve washed them twice so far and the lint is still bright turquoise! I’ll continue to wash thm as I doubt d will be great about washing her sheets separately. Was going to buy her bath sheets at bbb at $25 each but target had ones just as thick for $13 so bought them there…didn’t run in the wash at all.

Discovered we can open her Bank account at local U bank online so will do that when I get back. Would have liked her to do it but she has such limited access to the Internet this summer I’m not sure it’s feasible. She’s working through the mandatory alcohol awareness course and her summer reading book too. Slowly but surely things are getting crossed off the list! Was glad to hear the heat wave on the east coast broke for those there…

One last thing, we have AAA auto insurance and, at least in California, if your child goes to school 150+ miles away, you can remove them from your insuance. If they’re home for 30 days or less and drive, they’re covered at no extra cost. Thus, unless they come home for the summer, no need to even call the ins company at winter or spring breaks, etc.

Collage1 - Sent S to BBB today to pick out sheets…he also liked the jersey sheets so will look at Target. Was so glad he FINALLY looked at something. Am curious if jersey sheets stay “cool” or are they more on the lines of flannel?

And we have Allstate and its the same…glad cause I will need that money for college!

My D will be in a triple, and she has contacted both of her roommates. One girl has a fridge but they all agreed that since there will be 3 girls, 2 fridges would be better. 2 of the girls (including my D) have food/nut allergies, so they will have a nut-free fridge. I contacted Residential Living to make sure that they can have more than 1 fridge, and as long as they meet the size requirements, they can have up to 3 fridges.

Regarding food allergies- The housing/food service form did not have a specific place to list allergies- only “special accommodations.” D wrote that she has an allergy, mainly for the food service people, since her particular allergy is not common. Her allergy is airborne, and she carries an EpiPen as a result. She listed the info on the health forms, but I doubt that the information can be shared with Residential Living. After she contacted her roommates, and found out that one of the girls has a nut allergy, I was thinking about how important it is to have allergies listed on the Housing info. Imagine if a student had a severe peanut allergy, and one of the roommates lived off peanut butter? I guess that would be a reason to change roommates immediately.

**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th. (Excludes cadet training at West Point)
Move-in day in 11 days. Less than TWO weeks!

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 55 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

The link to the Move-in Date Thread is http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1141579-hs-class-2011-college-class-2015-move-dates-5.html</a></p>

Hi everyone. Haven’t posted on this thread yet, but did on the old one. When I called my insurance yesterday they also told me about the insurance policy for the dorm. For $30/year, it covers DS laptop if stolen. During orientation this summer, the police rep said that stolen laptops were the #1 crime on campus.

BTW-i luv this thread. It is always nice to get advice from others going through same experience. Completely agree on fridge/microwave purchased over rented. Now just waiting for my DS to let me know if he signs up for that or the carpeting.

madbean: S1 is very, very picky about his sheets. He may be a kid with some lingering sensory issues – as a child he hated the “seams” in socks and we cut the tags out of every shirt he owned. Anyway, he was very happy with some Wamsutta sheets that we purchased at BB&B. They’re 100% cotton, soft and silky. As I recall, they weren’t cheap but not crazy expensive. I was able to use the 20% off coupon on each piece. These were purchased 3 years ago. I’m headed to BB&B this weekend to see if they still have them for S2. The pocket looks generous, but I don’t know if it will fit your son’s topper or not. They were fine with my son’s topper but it isn’t featherbed or anything – some sort of fiberfill thing.

I’m disappointed in some sheets that I bought for S2. After washing, they feel rough. I was so excited about the “deal” I got, and they seemed soft and smooth before washing, but now I’m sorry I bought them. I got them at Macy’s with a combination of coupons and they were less than $20 for the whole set. Tommy Hilfigers, but the thread count was a little low. I guess I should have known. Can you return sheets that have been washed if you don’t like them? I think I’ll wash them a bunch of times to see if they soften up…does that ever help?

Our auto insurance does have a discounted rate also for college students, but they have to be over 100 miles away…lucky me, D was 98 miles!

ohiomom24, I believe Macy’s will take them back if you are unhappy with the quality after washing. They have a very generous return policy.

We have not done any shopping at all as ShawD will be away until mid-August. Will there be anything left at BB&B or Target (or Amazon)?

I know we’ll need sheets and mattress topper (but can only buy these after we find out what kind of room/bed she has) plus towels and no doubt some clothes (though it is hard to imagine her needing clothes) and a heavy winter jacket (we can wait until November on this, I’d guess).

If not, we should probably shop in Canada when we are there.

FlMathMom, a friend of ShawSon’s from HS is at Olin. Very bright kid. First generation immigrant who chose Olin (full ride) over Harvard and Princeton because he thought he would have a higher salary coming out of undergraduate and expects to support his mother. Really good kid.

Morning All

Shaw–like your family, our student is away til mid Aug.
I did buy towels (several sets) for approval and will return the rest.
Also purchased the sheets, a fleece blanket, topper and mattress pad (last year during after back to school sales) since they are twin xl and neutral color.
Have been concerned all will be picked over.

The big items like rugs, lamps, fridge, duvet etc can’t be selected til kiddo is back in the country and actually picks up a phone and speaks with roommate…They have chatted via FB and thats it.

We are flying in and so will be at the mercy of whats left in area stores if they dont get it together.

Classof 2015 I hear you on those tickets. Ours are RT, and kiddo’s was one way…I haven’t bothered to look at holiday tickets yet since until classes are picked out during shopping period and all of that…we have no clue about when kiddo would return home.
I had asked kiddo about the Christmas break and possible travel, and kiddo prefers to just come home to decompress…so at least I know we will be together in Dec

Parent of People - 2 miles difference! YIKES! Tell them she lives on the other side of campus. That should make up the difference.
