Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Shopped a combination of sites and got the $750 amount down to $450 so I am feeling pretty successful. I did the majority of the owrk but made him walk through the final purchase/choices with me. I found a coupon code for half.com for new users (15% off) and one for returning (12% off). Are we allowed to post them here?

The college bookstore is actually cheaper on one book and there is a packet for one class that he needs to buy from the bookstore.

One more to-do checked off!!! Although I do admit going to bed and crying last night thinking about him leaving and his first day. And I had been doing so well <<<sigh>>></sigh>

Wow, I haven’t been on this thread in weeks, I will never catch up. Almost done with the shopping- placing one last walmart site to store order. S leaves on the 12th via car- 18 hours with H. I am looking for S’s favorite mugs which are like soup bowls with handles. He wants a super large trash can.
I preordered books from campus bookstore, I was able to get a couple used. That way if things change he can return any of them within the first 2 weeks. Unlike the hs textbooks I was stuck with that I bought online used. I’ve got to start prewashing the sheets, towels etc and stamping everything with the laundry stamp. I think he will take the laundry service at least first semester and see how it goes. I’m sure there will be some shirts/khakis to iron and put on some hangers for the trip.

We are on the final steps…

Just bought the new macbook pro. Graduation gift, we were waiting for the lion operating system before we bought. D1 and D2 happy, since D2 is getting the white macbook that D1 used.

Loving all the advice on cc- about to purchase the CSI insurance and the memory foam is airing upstairs. Books ordered, so far $140 but still waiting on 2 course lists. D found cheapest on Amazon ( shipping with prime) but she was surprised that the Bookstore was actually the cheapest for one book. I think all we need to still buy is the surge protector and then she is good to go. Both D and I are planners!!

Next week is her last week at home. She is so excited and ready to begin the next phase of her life.

^ Whats a laundrey stamp?

I was reading about the laundrey service at the school, among the other things like registering for a post office box etc.
Alot of this stuff has to be done through kiddo’s U online ID acct etc.

10 days til kiddo arrives home and a along long list to to-do’s

I think the reason the departure to college hasn’t hit me–is that kiddo has been gone since end of May… :(
The other part is I am trying to not do everything and to let kiddo handle alot of it.
I have some lists made to help kiddo navigate some of it and can’t do much else without really becoming a helo parent. I don’t want kiddo to think I am constructing a helo pad on the dorm roof. ;)

AvonDad - Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I love how close DS and I got last year and am thrilled at having my CC Team to share everything with, but I am much happier at this stage of the adventure. We’ve had/are having a great summer, DS is going to a perfect match school with lots of merit aid and DH and I will be starting our second honeymoon after 20 years of childrearing. We have our health, are retired and have friends (virtual and non-virtual) and family to share our life with. What could be better?

BI - big hugs to you. We’ve all been or will be in your shoes at one point or more in this process. A good cry is always cathartic. Good to hear your DS’s reaction was so empathetic. What a great kid.

momofzach - hugs to you too

VAMom - my son will react the same way

Great idea fog. Let’s get started! Think anyone will notice?

My d is at Mall of America near Minneapolis today, with the rest of the girl scout camp staff. But, she said she isn’t buying anything, she is waiting till after girl scout camp season is over next week to do any shopping. (hello? why not get a thing or two while you are already out shopping? it can be stored in the car and not in the cabin…)

I had to call a friend today and ask her to tell me that buying the college health insurance really was the best idea for my d. I knew it was. I just needed permission to do it. It costs alot. But, my d is on state health insurance that won’t transfer easily to Lousiana from Iowa. She has serious preexisiting conditions that will make it hard, if not impossible, to get private insurance. My work insurance won’t take her until her current insurance kicks her off next April when she turns 19.

I will add her to my work insurance in April and she will be double insured for a bit. But, then she will be able to use my work insurance next year for a lot cheaper than using the school insurance. It really is a no brainer, just more than i wanted to spend. My friend was right though, it is nice to send d off 16 hours away, knowing that she has decent health insurance and will be able to get the healthcare she will likely need without needing me immediately there.

Where are people finding Twin XL mattress pads right now? We have just started shopping for dorm things. I’ve only been looking online so far (Company Store, etc.) and it looks like a lot of items are sold out. For mattress pads, I really like to be able to see them in person if possible. I haven’t been to BB&B yet - does anyone know how their supplies are in general?

I know I just have to get down there, but I thought I’d ask first…

For a general purpose mattress pad (no extra padding) we found our twin XL at Home Goods for $20. I think it was Ralph Lauren.

BBB had plenty of stock last week of a variety of mattress pads, covers etc. Enuf to drive ya crazy with indecision.

If anyone is ordering online at jcp.com today only (July 30) you can use code MEGASALE for $10 off a purchase of $25 or more. I just ordered a mattress pad. It is backordered but expected to ship in plenty of time for us.

Blue~Son bought all books before going to school (amazon.prime) except his foreign language. He sold them to students or bookstore at the end of semester  he is my entrepreneurial one :)

MomZack~ please post the coupon codes as I am still looking at books with S2 who fell asleep next to me ;)

S2 dorm mountain is starting to look official. All has been bought and washed.
Took S2 to BBB this morning, he checked all towels for softness and finally picked one

Hugs to all feeling blue

fogfog thanks, I saw that too but the energy tag doesn’t show the right info, unfortunately!

bajamm definitely sounds like the right choice on the health insurance!

2ed, wow on making it through twice!

momofzach, great deals! I think it’s fine to share codes (hopefully, since I just shared a JCP code). I haven’t decided if I’m helping DS with textbooks or not. He’s one of the “away for the summer” kids and would have to do it once he got to school, which doesn’t leave a ton of time for shipping. But, I really intended for him to deal with textbooks on his own (giving advice only if he requested it). According to our family financial plan, he is responsible for paying for textbooks, and I’d like him to take responsibility for finding them too. We’ll see if I can resist helping once his textbook list comes out.

I was at Kohl’s yesterday and they had XL twin sheet’s there. Strangely enough, they did not have any boy colors two weeks ago so I ordered them on line. Of course, after I bought them and washed them I found a huge selection at a local discount store for a really good price also yesterday. If you have an Ollie’s [Ollie’s Bargain Outlet | “Good Stuff Cheap!”](http://www.ollies.us/) check them out. I wonder if that stuff is now being cleared out from department stores and sent to places like that and TJ Maxx, etc.

Ah ha…
laundry stamps…
available in dark in and white ink (for dark items)
who knew ;)

[Laundry marking stamps, Clothing marking stamps, Linen marking stamps, Cloth marking stamps](http://www.erubberstamp.com/stamps/laundrystampsmain.htm)

Wish I had these years ago when my kids went to camp. I spent way to much time with a sharpie marking up labels.

I remember my mom sewing labels on everything when we went to camp.OY!

Do they really need their names in their clothes for college? I used sharpies (black and silver) for camp. I only needed to write our surname though as it is quite unusual.

kathiep, when we first started looking a few weeks ago we came to the conclusion that guys must not go to college. It took a while but finally found things that weren’t completely “girly”

We ended up doing the full sized comforter with twin xl sheets. The comforter was actually in a set with sheets included but luckily we can use them elsewhere.

I’m not doing it. I think it’s good if you use a laundry service but if someone is rude enough to steal your clothes, how would having them stamped help? OTOH, I could see one of my boys actually not recognizing his own sheets or jeans…

POP- I think the sellers just think that girls care more about decorating. Maybe they do in general but they’re missing the market on the MOM’s that buy for their son’s!
