Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

Went to BB&B to return what D had bought and basically “repurchase” it at a BB&B near her school. It was a down comforter and 2 sets of XL sheets.

Customer Service rep: You should really hang on to the sheets. You don’t want to be pickin’ 'em up down there.

Me: Okay…why not? (thinking she was alluding to some bed bug infestation at the local BB&B store or maybe they overcharged for ‘pack & hold’ for XL sheets which is such a stereotypical dorm item but not for the comforter)

Her: Because you’ll want to wash them first before you put them on her bed!

Me: What if I had no intention of doing that…?

Her: stunned silence at my complete and utter lack of maternal devotion.

Later that day, D asked about going shopping for some new clothes. I told her it would make a lot more sense buying her new clothes if she took care of the ones she already has.

D: What do you mean?
Me: Your clothes are all over your floor!
D: (pause) They’re resting.

^ We are huge football fans in our home…college, pro, and hs. Last year we had 10 fantasy football teams in the house between three of us!. We just got our tickets for three home games for Bluejr’s U. We are close enough that we can go for the day (a real luxury!). Bluejr has said the only reason he’s worried about not having a TV is being able to watch football games. I reminded him that all the dorms will have lounges with flat screen TVs and being in state he is sure to find somewhere to watch the weekly games with his team. Also there will probably be kids with TVs and if you offer to bring pizza you are always a welcome guest. Things haven’t changed THAT much! ;)

Classof2015 - I love it! Bluejr must have very well rested clothes! My mother took a picture of my room when I was in high school and still likes to bring it out now and again…it seriously looks like I took every single drawer and threw everything on the floor and draped things across furniture…like my closet threw-up…it’s truly hideous. I don’t remember ever being that messy but evidentially this was the norm, not the exception. :o

they’re pining for the fjords! (the clothes, that is)

mathmomvt, LOL!

Classof2015, glad to know that I am not the only cold-hearted parent who won’t be pre-washing sheets. :)

Even if you wanted to wash the sheets before using them, you could do that in the dorm! (Good excuse to make sure your kid can figure out how to use the machines before you leave ;-))

Thanks, momjr! Any Maryland/DC tips would be great - and I still know enough about Boston to return the favor for you (I have about 3 ice cream places you HAVE to go to, for example). I think while D2 would love to live in an apt/house again (as she did senior year) she’s realizing their cheaper offer of dorm living is probably her best bet. So I think she’ll only be driving in DC if absolutely necessary. I think just being able to go to the store or the movies on a whim is going to be plenty exciting for her.

D2 also has very restful clothes … and she’s not asking for anything new before school starts (I think she knows what the answer will be), except for the aforementioned black wardrobe for Acting classes. I did buy her an Octoberish jacket, a weight she’s never really had - a gorgeous blue trench-style coat at from Sears, very Audrey Hepburn. She’ll be “the girl with the blue coat,” I think. She says she needs yellow books and she can be Paddington the Bear.

Anyway, what girl moving to NY would want to buy clothes BEFORE she goes???

I have been a lurker for many months. Have learned a ton from reading these posts!
DD moves in to Yale 8/26 (pre-orientation activity starts 8/21) DH and I will meet her to assist with move-in on 8/25.

Slithey – phew! I thought she was going to call Child Protective Services.

blueiguana, emmybet – good to know our kids’ clothes aren’t sleep deprived.

EmmyBet – I like the idea of not buying a bunch of clothes before they go off to school. Somehow, their tastes change once they get their. I’m also pushing “vintage” (thrift stores). It’s cheaper, and not everyone has the same thing. It’s where I shopped in college.

Welcome zeemom! I’m so glad you decided to ‘de-lurk’ and add your DD to the list of move-in dates. The official list that we are using currently lives here:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1141579-hs-class-2011-college-class-2015-move-dates-5.html</a></p>

Please make sure you add her there. Our ‘Captain’ (AvonHSDad) posts the link daily with our countdown to move in for easy reference.

wish that my d wasn’t clothes shopping before school. Unfortunately the only store in town for to shop at once she goes to school is Walmart…so she is feeling the need to purchase some clothing before she leaves. She did need new pants as most of hers were too small and she had no shirts appropriate for a work study job or for going to parties/dates (ha ha) (she has been strictly a jeans/tee shirt girl in HS). I also insisted that she actually have a pair of rainboots for walking across campus (she hates boots, so this may be just for my fantasy that she will actually wear them!). I am not looking forward to my VISA bill arriving!

New clothes for college—not even mentioned at our house of men. The only thing mentioned was new tennis shoes. But I do think we will get a few items. Parents weekend is the 2nd weekend in October so I think most of what he is taking will be shorts, short sleeves, jeans and long sleeves. I think the coat, hoodies and such will come up with us during parent weekend since they are sharing 2 closets between 3 boys.

I have a move-in day question for those of you who have “been there/done that”. Many people have mentioned running out to the stores for last minute things. Here is his rough schedule:
8-11:30 move in
11:30-1 lunch
1-1:30 Group Photo
1:30-2:15 Parent Welcome
2:15-3 Goodbyes

The rest of the day (until 10pm) is scheduled with activities/meetings for new students. The next day they are having scheduled meetings and such from 9am-10pm most of which looks required.

So how does this work? Do moms and dads head out, buy stuff and then bring it back and drop it off somewhere or call in between a meeting?

I know this may sound obsessive type A on my part (I have been hearing that alot at home these days in regards to college!).

My name is Mom and I have a planning obsession!

After looking at the schedule at Bluejr’s school I realized that we are going to be better off doing a stop, drop, and roll. I confirmed with my girlfriend that this is what she is doing as well. I had thought we would spend the night and see him the next day to say goodbye. I think if we can agree to leave the dorm to another location (who knows where) for me to say goodbye…I can’t do it in the dorm in front of a bajillion kids… then we will just get him settled on Saturday and leave. One of Bluejr’s best friends is also going to the same school and her parents are dear friends of ours (gf mentioned above). Hopefully we can hook up with them for dinner and drinks on the way out to ease my pain. :)

momofzach. my guess is that the goodbyes means that they expect parents to hit the road for home then! That was very explicitly told to us at D’s orientation! So we will be setting her up in the morning, going to the picnic lunch, going to the short welcome ceremony, saying goodbye and then hitting the road!

I guess we will say goodbye and I will get a couple of cry hours in on the way home (Oh my lucky husband!) I like the idea of not saying goodbye in front of everyone but he may just have to end up being embarrassed by his crying momma.

I am going to TRY REALLY HARD not to cry but I am crying typing this so I have little faith in my ability to stay dry eyed that day.

momofzach: Since you have a relatively long move-in period (8 - 11:30), maybe you can get started with the move-in, assess what additional items might be needed, and send one person out to pick these things up. Your schedule is tighter than what we experienced with our first son. We had a short drop off window in the morning, but more time in the afternoon to make a shopping run and go back to finish up in the dorm room. I would probably plan to be there right at 8. The main things that we bought for S1 were extension cords (many extension cords), 3M hangers, and snacks.

As for clothes shopping, we bought lots (and lots!) of underwear and some new jeans…all online. We’ll get him new tennis shoes and lots and lots of socks. The socks and underwear are critical for boys, IMO. Mine would be willing to re-wear if that was the easiest option…so we’ll make sure he has lots of socks and underwear to avoid that. (Is it bad parenting that allows a son to think that re-wearing these would be okay? If so, I’m a bad mom.) My brother actually told my sons that in college it is okay to turn them inside out and rewear…and if you’re still out of underwear, you can wear your bathing suit. Gee, thanks!

**I have taken the first and last move-in dates for this countdown from the list on this thread. To try and list all of them would be overkill to say the least.

It’s August 1st. Suddenly the summer doesn’t seem that long any more. :(

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th.
Move-in day in 7 days. Just a week until our first move-in!

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 51 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

The link to the Move-in Date Thread is http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1141579-hs-class-2011-college-class-2015-move-dates-5.html</a></p>

Welcome zeemon!

^ Three weeks worth of underwear…twenty one pairs of boxers…I kid you not. About 15-20 pairs of socks at this point just because he wears flip-flops a lot. Bluejr is good at laundry but that doesn’t mean I think it will actually be done. We also live 90 min from school so there’s a better chance of things being brought home to be washed IMHO. Sooo, if he’s home every six weeks he only has to do laundry once to have clean underwear. That’s my thought process. Pretty sorry! :p

The new thread had 1,347 posts on 90 pages during its first month of life. I wonder if this pace will hold up throughout freshman year.

Believe it or not, our S will be coming home for summer 2012 in only 42 weeks!

BI: Our plan exactly - 3 weeks worth of socks and boxers. And then, I’m hoping he will be willing to break down and do the laundry after 3 weeks. No guarantees. We’ll be 10 hours away, so no dropping in to do laundry at home.
