VAMom- We received a letter and form from the FA office back in June to submit all 'outside scholarships" so that the FA can be readjusted. D1 received 6 different outside merit schoalrships, but no FA from the school, so we didn’t submit the form. (maybe we should have???)

Each of the scholarships has different payment methods. She received checks from 2 directly, 1 will send her a check made out the school, and 3 will be sent directly to the school.

Good morning, all! Sorry to have been silent for so long. We bought a vacation house in Maine this year (I had been fighting this idea for years, but agreed it was finally time. Plus we owe so many friends whom we have been mooching off forever!) so have been spending as much time as possible up here to get used to the property, the pace, etc. After a two steps forward, one step backward start with furnishings (replacing moldy upholstery) dealing with lack of electronics or privacy, and all the rest, we settled in to happy laziness. I have been reading the thread but have been about 2 days behind for ages, so no posting…
Unfortunately, reality is now rearing it’s ugly head. H put off moving the $ for D’s first tuition payment (due yesterday by 4 pm) - assumed it could be done electronically in 5 minutes, including moving things among accounts - so now $ will be late (Vanguard is FedEx-ing a check to us which we then need to FedEx to the U) and there will be fees and interest. Growl. Plus D is convinced that her acceptance will be withdrawn and her room given away before Wednesday, when the $ should arrive at school. Then, yesterday, S’s schedule and book list for this year (HS Class of 2014) arrived, so fall feels like it is coming quickly now.

D found out her roommate and room assignment yesterday and seems pleased with both. Hopefully they will talk soon and decide who is bringing what so we can finish our shopping!

Kiddo2 had surgery this am. It started 1 hr late and then went 2 hrs…so after recovery room, we are now back home.
Kiddo2 will sleep in den in upright postion (head/neck surgery) and I will sleep on coach in case kiddo needs something (pain meds, ice, bathroom). They tell us the swelling and discomfort is most difficult days 3,4,5…What a way to end summer. Though kiddo2 will be mostly recovered come school.

Kiddo2s school schedule arrived. a pretty decent schedule except kiddo is unhappy with locker assignment…

Kiddo1 is out of the country for sport and while happy about the experience etc, we are missing kiddo. Kiddo2 is feeling the strain of missing the older sib…and has recently said a few times that being without kiddo will be hard.

As for move in–kiddo2 is going…was adament about being there. It will be tough I am sure.

also–today is our 25th wedding anniversary…DH was like…“couldn’t you have scheduled this surgery for kiddo on another day…” uh, no, couldn’t. Had to take what we could get and I wanted kiddo2 on the mend before school (and before flying to take kiddo1 to move in).

Never a dull moment.

PS… I “volunteered” my mom once to go on a girlscout camping trip–on her anniversary…

MM: So glad that no one was injured in the accident, but sorry that you had the hassle of replacing yours. Don’t you wonder how some of these companies stay in business – how many tries should it take to fix the cable/internet? Hoping you’re feeling settled and enjoying the new house!

fogfog: Happy Anniversary! Hope your son recovers quickly!

**Not to add to everyone’s stress, but it appears that my countdown count was a day off. Everyone gets one more day! The corrected days are below. Thanks to mathmonvt for catching the error.

First new student move-in is the University of Georgia on August 9th.
Move-in day in 7 days. Just a week!

Last new student move-in is the University of Southern Oregon on September 22nd
Move-in day in 51 days.**

If there are earlier or later move-in dates, please post them so that I can pick them up and adjust the countdown postings.

Happy Anniversary fogfog! Our 25th is two weeks from today, 1986 was a great year! I have S2 scheduled for wisdom teeth extraction that day, maybe I should rethink that…We’re taking a big trip abroad this fall to celebrate the Big 2-5 and to distract me from my empty nest, do you have any plans for yours?

@ fogfog and yalemom: wow! Our 25th was in June. It would be going too far to try to correlate summer 1986 weddings to kids headed to New Haven, but it’s a fun coincidence.

gsmomma - what did you have to send to the scholarship provider to prove student is enrolled at college? We have one we need to get sent to Univ of Penn, but are not sure what to send them. That $750 could come in handy…

Sidenote: The scholarship was for a medical social reform group. Everyone wrote an essay about Eisenhower quote “Every gun is made, every warship launches, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed”. Top 10 had to go to dinner and read their paper to the group. Was a great night (DS didn’t win top prize of $2500, but $750 for going is a nice scholarship), but it was also kind of strange…it was the same night that Bin Laden was killed…saw announcement on TV during dinner break. A little awkward…can’t be to happy about weapons being used…

While at the surgery–in the waiting room, a man was telling someone sitting next to him that his wife ws having surgery today and it was their 25th too.

DH went out to pick up groceries for kiddo and a froz dinner for us. I went in to help unpack and was wadding up a bag to throw in the trash–I felt something in it–thinking it was a box of tylenol or something and out fell a box from the jewelers…with something sparkling! It was a BIG total surprise!

^Yay!!! Sparkling things are ALWAYS a nice surprise!!! Congratulations Maybe while your son recuperates tonight you should pop in the VHS tape of your wedding (if you have one) and open a bottle of champagne :)

Neither of my roommates particularly wants a TV. I’m in a forced triple so there frankly isn’t a whole lot of room for one. I was strongly considering getting a TV tuner for my laptop. Does anybody have any experience with these? Any brands to recommend or things to watch out for? Thanks!

Things to stress about tonight:
1- No idea how much tuition bill will be or when it will be due… was due July 15 but NYS raised tuition and all bills are being recalculated. I have no idea how much extra in fees we are looking at.

2-Can’t find the mattress pad that I am sure I already bought. I know as soon as I buy another one, I will find the original. I should just do that so I can stop looking for it, but I really hate making returns.

3-Move in falls during band camp for DD2. Talked to director a couple months ago, he is fine with her missing a day and a half and DD2 really wanted to go (she truly would be a great help!). Now as band camp gets closer, she doesn’t want to miss, so I told her she could stay with my parents or a friend. DD1 privately mentions (more than once now) how disappointed she is that DD2 won’t come. I have no idea how to solve this one. DD2 can’t come during Family Weekend (3 weekends later)due to marching band show. Wants to go the weekend after move in (Labor Day). I refuse to spend 3 out of 4 weekends at college… DD went away to school… I’d like to give her a chance to actually be away!
